Product Description

Maimonides, one of the most celebrated rabbis in the history of Judaism, was a prolific author of influential Arabic philosophical and medical treatises as well as two of the most important works on Jewish law. Presented here as a companion to the English translation and Arabic text of the first volume, On Asthma, Volume Two offers Gerrit Bos’s critical editions of all three surviving medieval Hebrew translations of Maimonides’ work: one allegedly prepared by the fourteenth-century physician Samuel Benveniste, who served Don Manuel, brother of King Pedro IV of Aragon; a second by Joshua Shatibi from Játiva (Xátiva) between the years 1379 and 1390, for the referendary Fernán Díaz of Toledo at the court of King Juan II of Castile; and a third by an anonymous translator, perhaps in the thirteenth century.  The volume also contains critical editions by Michael R. McVaugh of the two medieval Latin translations of Maimonides’ treatise, one probably made by Giovanni da Capua at Rome c. 1300 and the other begun by Armengaud Blaise in Montpellier in 1294 but completed eight years later. It concludes with a section of addenda and corrigenda to the first volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars allergy self help book
ALLERGYSELFHELPBOOK Outstanding.A book that was way ahead of it's time (progressive and ahead of the masses) when it was written. It is accurate helping you understand the many day to day products that can be making you allergic.HIGHLYRECOMMENDTHIS! A must read for anyone with allergies or stuffed up nose all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Allergy Self Help Book
This is a great book! It simplifies allergies so that the layperson can start doing something about allergy problems. Just the list of allergy symptoms helps educate patients about how they are being influenced by their allergies. I suggest that all of my TMJ and Orthodontic patients purchase the Allergy Self Help Book.
The book shows non invasive common sense methods for controling allergy problems. Unfortunately, many physicians and dentists are not aware of the severe effects allergies can have on their patients so patients have to educate themselves fully.
It is especially important that parents protect their children from the harmful effects of allergies such as decreased nasal breathing and neck problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very educational book on allergies!

4-0 out of 5 stars More Exercises Needed! - But Great Information
Although this book was not what I had expected it to be (i.e. a detailed book
with many pages devoted to breathing exercises e.g. paced breathing techniques etc)
I did not regret the purchase, in fact I was very impressed.

The reason why I rate this work so highly is because it offers a fresh perspective on
dealing with so called psychosomatic/psychophysiological ailments e.g. panic attacks, phobias
includingheadaches, migranes, hyperventilating, gasping for breath, Raynaud's condtions,
cold hands etc. The idea that irregular breathing patterns are at the heart of most disorders, although not surprising, is explained extremely well in terms of acid-base levels in the blood.

The primary topic dicussed in this book is hyperventilation. And as an Asthma sufferer I did
not think this work would be useful to me (since I usually struggle to get any air let alone overbreathe!), but I was very wrong!! This book was a great buy, because I now understand
the driving factors for my breathing difficulties from a scientific point of view.
    i.e. inhale/exhale ratios, CO2 levels, warms/cold hands etc.

I only have 2 criticisms, the last chapter about Music and Breathing seemed a little out
of place and mostly irrelevent. And secondly there isnt much on breathing techniques,
the only thing that is covered is deep diaphragmatic breathing (whist in the sitting position)
    - which is great if thats all you want!

    5 stars for information/nutrition/theory content
2 stars for practical exercises with deep breathing

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money this book is a fraud
I buy many books, never before gave up reading a book just within 30 minutes of browsing through various chapters looking for substance. I'm a person who has recovered from major depression which also entailed daily anxiety attacks and hyperventilation. I overcame my affliction by sheer will power through enormous love that I felt for my family and myself. I did that through redirecting my energy to change the things that I didn't like in my life. I also accomplished that through drastic change in my diet and through daily exercise for the last ten years. I was looking for a book to teach me better breathing, because by nature I'm a person who gets to excited in reaction to anything. This is a guy who one day decided to write a book by exploiting the most obvious things. The book is made of many anecdotes and repetition of many facts most people already know. Never before did I wish to return a book and ask for a refund. This time I do. This book will not go into my library, but it will go where my daily junk mail goes, the trash. .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good interdisciplinary book
This book is good because it emphasizes breathing techniques to attenuate stress-induced conditions (ex. Asthma, Anxiety). But again, as with most stress books, it falls short on recommending proper nutritional supplementation. Most Asthma books don't recommend any holistic/herbal remedies; they only recommend pharmaceutical drugs. A few Asthma books like these do recommend natural remedies, but these remedies are often unproven, and can be dangerous if mixed with other drugs/alcohol. I am really disappointed in all Asthma books in general, because they most often do not recommend the three most important ORTHOMOLECULAR Asthma remedies: Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C. Calcium is simply there to balance magnesium and to chelate with ascorbate (vitamin C) to make calcium ascorbate. Magnesium relaxes lungs and improves air flow. Last and certainly not least, vitamin C has potent antihistamine effects via inhibiton of mast cell degranulation, and also has bronchodilator effects via inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Taking several grams
a day of vitamin C (preferably buffered calcium ascorbate), along with some magnesium may completely inhibit mild asthma, and should significantly help moderate to severe asthma, with no known drug interactions (except perhaps with Theophylline, which inhibits the same phosphodiesterase enzyme that vitamin C does). These three natural supplements also play very important roles in maintaining mental health. This information is referenced in the Allergies/Asthma chapter and Chronic Mental Illnesses Part of my book "The Failures of American Medicine", available here at Amazon...

MAKE THE BREATH CONNECTION -- AND SAVE YOUR OWN LIFE

Are you one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who suffer from asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, or other respiratory ailments? Far too often, people with these illnesses are prescribed medications that only mask symptoms, instead of really treating the underlying condition. If you are among this group, it's time for you to escape this prison and start Breathing Free.

Teresa Hale, founder of the world-renowned Hale Clinic, has created a groundbreaking treatment that can dramatically change the lives of anyone who feels the crippling affect these illnesses can have on their daily lives, in as little as five days. Called the Breath Connection, this revolutionary program is based on more than forty-five years of empirical research, as well as the Buteyko method, which focuses on dysfunctional breathing, or overbreathing, as the cause of more than 200 respiratory diseases.

Breathing Free is complete with line drawings and clear instructions on how to use these simple methods to reestablish normal breathing patterns to prevent and overcome attacks, restore healthy and restful sleep, and reduce the need for medication by up to 60 percent. For the many people who have lived with the struggle of breathing problems, Breathing Free provides hope for relief, better health, and a better life.Amazon.com Review
Asthma kills 6,000 people a year. Respiratory illnesses affectmillions more. According to Teresa Hale, asthmatics and others withrespiratory illnesses are breathing wrong. "We have been led tobelieve that deep breathing is good for us because it increases ouroxygen intake. In fact, the reverse is true. The more we breathe, theless oxygen actually reaches the cells of our bodies," says Hale inBreathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Program to Heal Asthma,Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments. Herbreathing program, Breath Connection, teaches you to change yourbreathing patterns so that you won't need to wheeze, breathe heavily,or take gulps of air after exertion. Hale promises that five days onthis program will reduce your need for medications, and regularpractice often increases metabolism and leads to weight loss.

Breathing Free gives a self-test to assess your breathing andteaches several techniques to improve it. Hale explains how to adaptthe program for mild, moderate, or severe asthma; emphysema;bronchitis; panic attacks; general health; and children withasthma. She also suggests dietary guidelines.

Hale's program isbased on the work of Konstantin Buteyko of the former Soviet Union. Itis easy to understand, but will take time and effort to master. ButHale says you have a choice: "Stay where you are, with your daydreamsand your deteriorating health, or take control and make some effort toeffect permanent change." Hale founded Britain's renowned Hale Clinic, whose clients have included Princess Diana, the Duchess of York, TinaTurner, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Headache relief with understanding
Debilitating headaches and nothing I could do!...until I picked up the book Breathing Free by Teresa Hale of London's Hale Clinic.I wasn't even reading it for myself ... I am not asthmatic; my cardiovascular system is involved. This book thoroughly explains my dilemma and walks me through a solution (the Buteyko Breathing Technique). What's more, I've gone from a CP of 10 to 30 in a short time.I'll have trouble till the culprit ozone (ethanol gas, some air purifiers, etc) is removed from our airspace but my live has been greatly eased.I have never read a more helpful book; thank you Teresa Hale!sl

PS I'm on my third reading :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Breathing Free' by Teresa Hale
This book teaches the reader to use the basics of the Buyteko breathing method to aleviate allergy and asthma symptoms.I already had an understanding of this approach, so implementing the breathing exercises was not difficult. As promised on the cover, I did experience a dramatic change, not in the asthma, but in the allergies. After the first day, my sinus problems cleared up considerably. For the first time in years, I can breath without mucus obstruction.I have tapered off two allergy medicines already. In fact, I did not know I had so many sinus issues until I did the breathing sets in the book.My lack of improvement in the asthma was not the book's fault.I had been for two years a nose breather and was taping my mouth at night to prevent mouth breathing. This immediately decreases asthma symptoms because the body is expelling less carbon dioxide, a necessary element for good health. However, unless this is accompanied by additional Buyteko exercies, the asthma will eventually worsen again, as mine did.If you are serious about pursuing Buyteko, read this book and find a qualified practitioner who teaches breath holds (also known as "pauses" in the Buyteko world.)Although the reduced breathing or relaxed breathing works for some people, it was not sufficient for me.A slightly more aggressive approach actually speeds along the recovery from asthma. After finding a competent Buyteko teacher at "[...]", the asthma symptoms are gradually subsiding. This book is defintely a good step toward controlling lung issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breathing free
I read this book then recommended to my spouse and daughter who both have breathing problems. My daughter with asthma and spouse with COPD and emphasyma.

They took the reading serious and have been practising the exercises.

The service from Amazon was terrific, came before the time table which was nice.

Thanks for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Asthma Control Technique
This is an outstanding book!I have been having some asthma symptoms, adult onset, and it was frightening to say the least. With this material I learned a different way of breathing, I learned the connection between panic and anxiety and asthma so as to be less frightened, and I simply feel better.I think everybody should read this, and not just those with asthma or emphysema.I didn't realize that the body won't die from an asthma attack unless medications are being used which alter the body's response to asthma. That fact in itself took a lot of fear out of my breathing difficulties, thus helping me to breathe easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has the actual exercises, some do not
This book has the actual Buteyko exercises, whereas some of the books that talk about the Buteyko method, just tease you and never get around to giving you the exercises (Freedom from Asthma). It also has little pictures and charts to help you be more self-disciplined with the program.I do not know if it works yet, as I've barely started and have severe asthma. I'll write again later. ... Read more

This is a book written for patients with lung diseases. The goal for patients should be to better understand the underlying medical problems. There is a direct correlation between knowledge and health care benifits received. The author has practiced pulmonary medicine for about 30 years in the Chicago area, He sees a need for improving patient and family education regarding disease status.Once patients have acquired the necessary knowledge, they will be in a much better position to understand the rationale for the course of action their physicians provide. The other side of the coin is that the less the patients understand about the disease the more difficult it is for their physicians to deliver health care. This book is written with the intent of explaining complex medical issues. For the parents of the more than 2.7 million American children suffering from asthma comes a state-of-the-art guide to recognizing, understanding, and controlling asthma attacks. From warning signs and triggers to inhalers and other medications, this comprehensive book covers everything a family needs to know.Amazon.com Review
Like most asthma sufferers, you probably stumbled onto the disease, completely incognizant of why you suddenly couldn't do something as simple as breathing. For the estimated 14.6 million Americans who suffer from asthma and related allergies, the American Lung Association's Family Guide to Asthma and Allergies is the essential aid in preventing and treating asthma. The first chapters walk you through the underlying causes of asthma. They identify common triggers and explain the biochemical reactions these triggers set off in the body in easy-to-understand terms, clarifying the interconnected relationship between asthma and other allergies. The rest of the book offers thorough, practical instruction. A chapter on allergy-proofing your house leaves no dust mite or speck of pollen unaccounted for. Each chapter provides checklists to help you manage everyday situations, such as educating the babysitter, preparing for a vacation, or even teaching your child how to use different medications and gradually learn how to control his or her own condition. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Eerily similar to another book
When I picked up this book to read the section on dust mites this afternoon, I felt terribly confused because it sounded just like the book I read earlier this afternoon.I checked to make sure I hadn't accidentally acquired two versions of the same book, but no, I hadn't. The other book,Taming Asthma and Allergy by Controlling Your Environment: A Guide for Patients by Robert A. Wood, was published three years earlier and didn't appear to have any link to this one.Dr. Wood is not an author of the ALA book, and his book is not credited in the dust mites section (although it is listed as a reference on page 221 of the ALA book.

I compared the two books line-by-line, and they were eerily similar:the American Lung Association's section on dustmites copies the structure of the prior book, with some slight paraphrasing and editing. For example, here's a breakdown of one paragraph found on page 65-66 of the Wood book, and p. 79 of the ALA book:

WOOD:"The next step is to remove all unnecessary fabric items, especially stuffed animals."
ALA:"The next step to controlling dustmites is to consider removing all unnecessary fabric items from the bedroom.Try to get rid of as many stuffed animals as possible."

WOOD "Other items you should remove from the bed include extra pillows, canopies, and comforters -- especially down comforters. Replace them with items that can be laundered easily, and wash all items in a hot cycle at least once every two weeks."
ALA, p. 79You should also remove extra pillows, canopies, and thick comforters (especially down comforters) and replace them with items you can readily wash. You should wash all bedding in hot water at least two weeks to kill mites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing common sense for a governmental publication
This book provides a good baseline start for controlling environmental allergies for parents with highly allergic or asthmatic children. Of course, the parents themselves can also benefit by following the procedures indicated in the book. Two things that I did not find in the book were: a comprehensive plan for dealing with food allergies/food sensivities, and also what nutritional supplements people with allergies/asthma should be taking. Vitamin C should be taken by all people who have allergies and/or asthma, because high doses of Vitamin C block mast cell degranulation, which inhibits histamine release (thus Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine). Also, Vitamin C has bronchodilator effects. For more information about Vitamin C's myriad functions, read the book The Failures of American Medicine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For you child's sake, I beg you to read this review
There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends that all asthma sufferers take supplemental magnesium daily -- 600 mg daily for addults (proportionally less, according to their body weight, for children). People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. For your child's sake, please read Dr. Dean's important book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every parent dealing with asthma should have this!!
I have never reviewed a book before despite always reading the reviews before buying a book.No book has ever changed my life the way that this one has!!My son was diagnosed in March 2003 and his doctor thought his asthma would just be something that was tacked onto the end of a cold and nothing more.Unfortunately he seemed to always have a new cough (classic asthma symptom).I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the disease and becoming a patient advocate for my son.Having this book is a gift!It has changed our lives. We were scared and now we're prepared! My son has not had the cough since we started the program in June. We've been using the recommended daily monitoring and preventive meds and life is grand. If you're dealing with asthma, BUY THIS BOOK!

Imagery designed to help reduce swollen linings in the lungs, dissolve mucous, and loosen tightened muscle bands in the airways; to help neutralize the histamine response in the mast cells; to reduce anxiety; to help the listener feel more cushioned. Side B is affirmations. (Running time: 46 minutes)

Keywords: asthma, allergies, upper respiratory infection, lung diseaseAmazon.com Review
There is no one right way to go with Belleruth Naparstek on a journey, no one right way to "visualize." That may sound too basic a directive, but Naparstek encourages listeners to linger over any given image or rearrange her words and phrases into something that works more effectively.Belleruth Naparstek's voice is at once soothing and deep; the pace of her presentation offers ample time in which to follow the instructions and "see" the images suggested in this deeply relaxing, healing inner journey.

People undergoing chemotherapy can expect from this tape the familiar components of guided imagery--the deep relaxation, engaged senses, detached awareness--and healing images that work to alleviate the suffering associated with chemo. The profound imagining on the part of the listener reaches "all the way to the bone; into each and every cell, cleansing and clearing." Part of the tape's purpose is to bring the listener to believe in his or her own healing.

Guided imagery, though not a substitute for medical treatment, has shown that using the mind in this way helps alleviate pain and boost the immune system. There is no doubt that Belleruth Naparstek's beautiful voice, combined with the deep musical tones that provide the background "music" and the rich, nourishing, 20-minute experience of guided imagery, has a profound impact on body and soul. ... Product Description
Evaluation and diagnosis of obstructive lung disease call for careful history taking to distinguish asthma from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A history of atopy and intermittent, reactive symptoms points toward a diagnosis of asthma, whereas smoking and advanced age are more indicative of COPD. Clinical features such as cough and wheezing, especially in light of patient history, can be suggestive but are not definitive. Spirometry, usually performed in the primary care setting, is the key diagnostic tool that distinguishes patients with asthma from patients with COPD. In this article, the authors outline an approach to differential diagnosis of asthma and COPD that should result in better evaluation, therapy, and quality of life for these patients. ... Read more
