My thoughts
I knew that this was going to be a CD but it's much harder to read a CD than it is a paper book.Probably woundn't do this again.

Take care...
I was all set to order the book "A Guide to Astrophotography with DSLR Cameras" by Jerry Lodriguss from the publisher's webpage, it having been highly recommended.I thought I would check Amazon.com to see if I could save (on shipping costs, for example), but shied away from that because it did not guarantee that I would be getting the "fourth printing" of the book.
So I went back to the publishers website.I was double-checking my order when a horrible thought crossed my mind: Could this be an "electronic book"?
I was reassured that the publisher's ad copy said "Fourth Printing" and that my search (thus far) had revealed no admissions of its not having been printed at all, only references to "book", not "electronic book".
Then, fortunately, I looked over to the left side of the publisher's webpage, where about halfway down it said "This book on CD-ROM is not a traditional paper book".Yikes!I had narrowly avoided the mistake of ordering it!I had not looked carefully enough! (I should have seen this on the Amazon.com page, but spent little time there.)
I own several electronic books and, although they do have some value (it is nice to be able to search for text), I usually just take one or two looks at them and then they get stacked on my shelf or in a drawer to be forgotten.
With an actual book I can leave it on the table by my bedside for instant reading, flopping it down on the night table opened to my page when half-asleep, make annotations or highlight text easily,quickly riffle through the pages of a dull or uninteresting section, flip back and fourth instantly between a text reference and the figure it refers to, instantly compare a picture with one in an entirely different part of the book or in a different book, put it on the shelf at eye level where visiting friends may see and ask it about it, etc.
Also, I find that I remember things on the printed page much better than on a monitor screen that hosts dancing photons.
I really hope this material will some day be published in an actual book.I shall wait for that. It would be too painfully tedious to print it out (especially if I had to "screen-capture" each page to do that).
In closing, I note that Amazon.com makes its more clear that it is just an electronic book (especially to regular Amazon customers) by putting "CD-ROM" where they would normally put "hardcover" or "paperback". I have used Amazon.com regularly and continue to be a happy customer.This is a review of the "book", not of Amazon.com.

Don't waste your money
It's a CD with information from his website. Nothing else special. I should listen to the previous reviewer but I thought it's a DVD with video. IT'S A CD!!!!!!!! What a waste of money.
5 minutes using google and you will beable to find more information about astrophotography then paying this price.
I rate one star because Amazon force me. Otherwise I will give 0 star.

The web pages are a teaser, the CD is movie...
I looked at the web pages and compared them to the CD.The web pages are informative, but the CD includes video and practice files.It's like comparing the free version of photoshop to the full version.You can get started with the free version, but as you progress, it will only take you so far. That is when you need the full version.The CD includes pages from the web site, but adds more written pages covering more advanced techniques.In addition, video and practice files help to hone your skills before you wreck a few of your hard earned astrophotos.
I probably would not strongly recommend this book if you are employed in the virtual media field, or are a professional free lance digital photographer, as you are most likely quite adept with photoshop and beyond.However, if you are an old school film astrophotographer (like myself), finally making the switch to digital, a novice/intermediate digital person, or a newbe, you will find this book quite useful.If you are an advanced digital astrophotographer, you might be able to compare Jerry's technique to your own, especially for the low price.
If you are just getting started, believe it or not, digital astrophotography is far easier to master than film work.This CD is a great place to start!

How to start photographing the heavens
Robert Reeves' "Wide-Field Astrophotography: Exposing the Universe Starting With a Common Camera" is one of the two must reads for amateur astrophotographers. Whereas most books on the subject cover the whole gamut of different types of astrophotography, Reeves justs focuses in on the most basic form of astrophotography, wide-field astrophotography, using a regular film camera and its lenses. He covers the topic from the basics of choosing an appropriate camera, lenses, mounts, filters and film thru to advanced darkroom techniques and graduating to a Schmidt camera. Though many of the films mentioned in the book have been replaced by their manufacturers, the author explains how to test a film for its suitability for astrophotography.

If you are interested in detailed imaging of the planets with a digital camera or CCD astroimager, then this is not the book for you. But if you want to capture huge swaths of the Milky Way or take pictures of the constellations, then this is the best book available to give you your start. All the photos in this book are reproduced in black and white, but most of them were taken using black and white film. This book is appropriate for all levels from beginners to advanced astrophotographers, but its organization may make it a little inconvinient for an absolute beginner to find the information needed to get started, but it is a great reference for the intermediate, advanced, and serious hobbyist astrophotographers.

Practical info for novice to expert
I'm a novice and found the information easy to digest and practical.Mr. Reeves spends a good amount of time on not just the process of wide-field photography - something anyone with a 35mm camera can learn - but he also discusses the pros and cons of specific brands of cameras and in some cases, specific models.There is an extensive list of films that he rates.Some of the films are fairly exotic but many are available at your local photo supply.He helps you choose from those easily available so you can start your photography quest quickly and easily.Of course, shooting quality images is very much a trial and error affair.Reeves provides a process for helping you to not only choose the right film and exposure, but provides some nice insight into focusing those little white dots.The photos in the book are disappointingly B&W and most have been taken with his Schmidt camera.A Schmidt is something few of us have access to, let alone own.However, aside from this quibble, the reading is very quick and I've used it repeatedly as reference.The book's organization seemed clunky to me but not distractingly so.I reread this book for fun too.It will make you realize what's within your immediate grasp.
