So you listened to the doctors and public-health professionalsand Nike commercials, and you believe it's a good thing that you'restill exercising and playing sports well into your fourth or fifth oreven sixth decade of life. You know all about the problems that accruewith inactivity: a weak heart, clogged arteries, and atrophied muscletissue and bone mass, all of it adding up to a precipitous decline inphysical abilities.

But maybe you weren't expecting the problemsthat accrue with activity: the wear and tear on your knees, pain inthe arches of your feet, irritated bursa in your shoulders, inflamednerves in your back.

Athletic Forever is as good a guidebookas there is for the men and women who plan to take their jockstraps, jog bras, knee braces, and orthotic shoe inserts to the grave withthem. It spans the gap between layman's language and that used bymedical professionals--pointing out, for example, why terms like"slipped disc" aren't really accurate, and why "herniated disc" betterdescribes the injury.

The book's organization allows you to jumpin wherever your interest takes you. If you want to know more about aspecific problem--shoulder, knee, ankle--you can go straight to thatchapter. It would be a shame, though, for anyone interested inlifelong health and fitness to skip the opening chapters. Theseprovide not only the scary facts about how an untrained bodydegenerates through the decades, but also how a trained body literallybeats the aging process. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and helpful
"Athletic Forever" provides information on getting into shape without getting injured. It offers nutritional guidance and provides an easy-to-understand overview of the principles of scientific training -- the very guidelines used by professional coaches and athletes for attaining peak fitness. Should you get injured in the course of pursuing sports and recreation, "Athletic Forever" will get you back in the game fast: simply refer to the back of the book where you'll find a comprehensive guide to sports injuries -- how to recognize them and what to do to overcome them. This is a no-nonsense, easy-to-understand book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Athletic Forever is an excellent health reference book because it doesn't simplify things, as so many new "fitness plans" do. Dr. Jobe & his colleagues simply present good factual information and excellenttips to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle. I found the back sectionof exercises particularly useful and authoritative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for all athletes and health professionals!
It was a great pleasure to read and learn from "Athletic Forever. The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Plan for Lifetime Fitness." Dr. Frank Jobe et al have taken on an interesting, contemporary subject in a mosttimely manner. The glowing forwards from Tommy Lasorda and Magic Johnsonillustrate the tremndous respect that professional sports celebrities havefor Dr. Jobe and "Athletic Forever." The text is formatted in alogical, concise manner and explores anatomy, injuries and treatmentprotocol without getting bogged down in needless detail. The KJ facts andcloseups clearly add a new dimension to the body of knowlege regardinglifetime fitness. I especially enjoyed the insights with regards todiagnosing the cause of back pain. It is very refreshing to hear fromtheexperts that high tech and costly imaging methods such as MRI's are in manycases unrelated to a patient's back pain. The section on stregthening andflexibility exercises is presented in a straight forward manner yetprovides exceedingly valuable information in a refreshingly "lowtech" appearance. Perhaps it is beyond the scope of the text, but itmay have been useful to discuss 1 or 2 of the Kerlan-Jobe innovations inthe field of sports medicine (For example, I would have been extremelyinterested in the story of Tommy John and the procedures and rehabilitationused in the "rebuilding of his pitcher's arm.") I would highlyreccomend "Athletic Forever" to all athletes and healthprofessionals! ... Read more

Product Description

The third edition of Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries assists both current and future rehabilitation professionals in recognizing musculoskeletal injuries, performing musculoskeletal examinations of athletic injuries, and evaluating if and when to refer clients to a physician's care. The text will help students master the skills required for completing the Board of Certification examination for athletic trainers by thoroughly covering all the content in this area of specialization set forth in the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Athletic Training Educational Competencies.

Completely updated and expanded, the third edition of Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries incorporates an increased emphasis on clinical decision making, problem solving, and integration of skill application. Revised chapter-opening scenarios present open-ended real-life situations that initiate discussion of the complexity of athletic injury examination. Review and critical thinking questions have been updated to assist readers in developing their clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills. Laboratory activities have been added to aid students with hands-on practical application of the material. Data tables that report the sensitivity and specificity of special tests strengthen the evidence-based selection of those tests as they are used in the examination procedure. Also, revised information in the functional anatomy and injury recognition sections form a more cohesive connection with the musculoskeletal examination process.

Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries begins with comprehensive coverage of foundational assessment tools, which prepare readers to understand and apply the joint-specific evaluation techniques that follow. Next, recognition and examination of injuries and conditions specific to each body region are addressed. Real-life scenarios precede the discussion of each examination strategy. The final section of the text addresses general medical conditions normally found in active persons. Because examinations of these conditions usually are the physician's responsibility and require the use of diagnostic tests for identification, the text prepares readers to make appropriate referrals based on patients' histories, signs and symptoms, and their own observations. This unique text categorizes injury examination strategies into on-site, acute, and clinical protocols, allowing rehabilitation professionals and students to focus their evaluation skills on emergent, nonemergent, and postacute conditions.

Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries also includes learning elements and supplemental materials for students, professionals, and instructors:

-Pedagogical aids such as chapter objectives and summaries, key terms, review and critical thinking questions, a glossary, references, and bibliographical material assist in learning and retaining crucial material.

-More than 120 lab activities for each chapter assist students in building their clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills.

-Special warning boxes and reminder boxes highlight techniques and knowledge crucial for avoiding further injury, permanent disability, or even death.

-Over 500 photographs and nearly 300 illustrations and tables enhance comprehension of content.

-Checklists provide the framework for developing a systematic approach to injury examination in various settings.
Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries, Third Edition, features an online student resource (OSR) that will help students thoroughly understand the material. The OSR includes printable examination checklists; tables detailing range of motion, neurological conditions, and strength; and superb full-color photographs of skin ailments that will enhance students' ability to identify skin disorders. For instructors, the text includes a full range of ancillaries including an image bank, instructor guide, and test bank.

John Gerdy offers a critical analysis of how athletic programs can contribute to the mission of a college or university in meaningful ways beyond their roles in providing revenue and entertainment. He explores the history of athletic programs and then offers a philosophical rationale for setting a new standard against which the success of college athletic programs should be measured. Rather than focusing on the level of funds generated, or on the number of championships won, this new standard offers a basis for determining how successful a college athletic program is in helping the institution meet its many challenges and educational goals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Become a full partner with your trainer.
Too often those who are really good at something are in such demand for their services that they have little time to provide a complete presentation to explain it all for others.Houglum and the team that assisted in producing this book with its hundreds of photographs and detailed exercise instructions have done so."Why, how, when and what to do," are all spelled out. While the book is intended for sports / rehab professionals, many of the technical terms not familiar to those who are not in the field are provided in a glossary."Theraputic Exercise for Athletic Injuries" is an excellent resource for those who wish to continue to improve their physical condition long after the limited physical rehabilitation provided by insurance coverage is complete. It is almost as good as having Houglum on-line as your own personal trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Tennis Parents and Coaches!
I was a little sceptical at first thinking the author is a tennis coach, but where are the tennis guidelines for raising those balanced and coordinated kids? Then I realized, it doesn't matter what kind of ballsport your kids are interested in, the guidance this book offers is universally applicable. But I'm kind of into tennis a lot and was particularly pleased that a lot of those subjects direct relate to how kids can become good tennis athletes. The two areas I found most fascinating were sidedness (never heard of that term) and hand-eye coordination. After realizing what's behind those terms and how kids can actually learn how to get better hand-eye coordination, soooo important in tennis, I say this book is not only great for parents, but should be standard material for all tennis coaches who are serious about their mission.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for every parent...
Simply put this book makes it simple. The first half of the book gives a good overview, in layman's terms, of child development. The second half has copious game outlines and suggestions in a game appendix with explanations on how each game helps the child's mental and physical development. Nothing in the book should come as a surprise but the book offers a steady resource to turn towards. The outlines and information it offers puts everything into perspective to a point where you grow beyond even "needing" the book. In addition it contains good notes on why and how not to push a child into sports. It argues against specialization as compared to generalization. Meaning it says not to try and turn your kid into Tiger Woods but rather to try and give your child the opportunity to be well rounded.

5-0 out of 5 stars An useful book for parents who want to play beyond pick-a-boo and wii games wtih their children
I was exited when I found this book. Eight yeas ago nothing like this was available when I had my first child. Some of the books I read outlined "normal" milestones and what my child was probably doing by certain ages, but there was nothing that provided such a comprehensive look into children physical development. When I was concerned about something, my pediatrician would remind me that children develop at their own rate and that he (my son) would eventually catch-up, or that his clumsiness was normal at his age (he said that at 2, 3, 4, he started getting a little bit better once he started playing sports at 5, 6, 7,and 8)

Karen Ronney pushes the envelope by not letting us accept that athleticism is a gift that children are either born with or without, but instead insists that parents can influence negatively or positively such gift. The games are fun, even for my son, who is now eight (by adjusting some of the games to make them more challenging). We've been able to see some improvement with his mixed-sideness (term I didn't know until I read the book).

With my super kinetic 9 month-old daughter this book has become a great guide. She could only play pick-a-boo for so long. She likes the special playing time she gets with Dad, crawling, standing, twisting, searching... My husband only has to give 10 minutes and they both have a thrill, which is great because sometimes he doesn't have more time than that. And I know what to do to make blanket time funner for both of us.

Coordination is not a gift only for the super athlete, but for raising kids who feel confident about themselves and are competent to use their bodies for what they can do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proud Parents' Guide to Raising Athletic, Balanced, Coordinated Kids
This is an excellent book.It promotes you encouraging physical activity for the sake of encouraging a child that can build off their learning styles and developmental capacity. It discourages you from being unrealistic with your child and gives you the tools to develop a plan that can help your child be healthy, active, happy, and athletic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Moms Make Fit Kids
This book, Proud Parents' Guide ..., is such a great help for parents to understand the whys and wherefores of doing simple things like pat-a-cake that build into bigger and better things, like eye-hand coordination. All the game choices in the book, separated into age categories, provide quick, simple fun that my kids love, and now I know they're getting more benefits than I ever imagined. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Only way to travel and stay fit
I still use this book even though it is several years old. It's a nice reference. But what really helps me out when I travel is the web portal this same company created.[...] covers way more places than the book ever could. And there are running route maps, loads of pictures of the work out places, and even yoga studios. The online resource also recommends places to eat for every destination. And there is a good mix of places (cafes, business meeting type places, vegetarian, diners, even markets that have prepared food).

So if you like having a "book"in hand, this one still works, but if you need a lot more cities (Europe, Canada) and pictures, and places to eat and other stuff, also check out the online version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mind the subtitle
Jim Kaese and Paul Huddle have given us a reference work, not a discussion of what it means to be an athletic-minded traveler nor how to become athletic minded if you are a traveler doubling as a couch potato.

Mind the subtitle: 'Where to work out and stay when fitness is a priority.'

If a reference book for your or your travel agent is what you need, this is your book.

If you want to figure out how to maintain some level of fitness in an ever-changing travel environment that seems to mock the very thought of it, this is not your book. Those books do exist (see my other reviews) and you'd be wise to buy one of them.

The book under review here is organized by major U.S. metropolitan areas. Since airport fitness facilities are still not widely available, the writers have to presume you're willing to part company with two taxi fares for many of the venues. Things get a little better on the hotel side, where noticable improvement in most major hotel chains now makes it possible to get a workout without falling down the steps, where you are fortunate to be found within the week.

Bottom line: the book delivers what the subtitle promises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atheltic Minded Book wins a Gold Medal
I received the Athletic Minded Traveler for Christmas. I was skeptical at first since I thought it was just another travel guide.Once I started looking at the book, however, I realized that it was extrememly helpful and the pithy writing made it a pleasure to read.Morover, the easy to use summary for the hotels allowed me to quickly and easily choose a hotel on my first business trip of 2006. (The guide was right on the money about the hotel.)This is an invaluable tool for anyone who travels, whether for business or pleasure--it even covers smaller cities like Cleveland and Madison, WI).Today, whilst surfing the web I found the author's website, which expands on the book. The site has even more information such as running routes and thorough restaurants recommendations for healthy eating on the road. From now on, I'm going to consult the book and the web site before I travel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book Ever!
I've actually used this book in a number of the cities and it saved me time and energy trying to find someplace to workout.

Real information the hotels won't give you. How many times have we called hotels and been told they have something only to get there and its not the case?

This book will make working out on the road extremely simple whether you are a casual athlete or an Ironman Triathlete!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic resource!
I gave several of these as xmas gifts to friends who travel for business
and all of them can't stop raving about how useful it is--the authors
obviously did their homework.I even got an email from one of my friends
while he was on a business trip to tell me that he just got back from a
health club recommended in the book where he ended up running next to a
woman who asked him out for a date!Bet the authors never thought they
would be making love matches!
