Product Description
Would it surprise you to learn that to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem, you need to get up and leave the room? A walk in the woods will help you finish your novel? Humming can make you a better tennis player? Or completely giving up is the way to succeed?

In The Breakout Principle, the bestselling author of The Relaxation Response delivers the ultimate self-help principle -- simple instructions to activate a powerful biological trigger that converts conflict and confusion into clarity and extraordinary performance, a state athletes refer to as "the zone."

More than three decades ago, Dr. Herbert Benson of the Harvard Medical School began research into why some people are devastated by stress while others thrive, turning it into brilliant achievement. Now The Breakout Principle reports the discovery of an easy-to-access inner switch that increases mental function, enhances creativity and productivity, maximizes athletic performance, and enriches spiritual life. The same internal mechanism that improves a tennis serve or golf putt strengthens your speaking skills, makes you a better negotiator, and fosters inner peace and belief.

Dr. Benson and coauthor William Proctor explain the cutting-edge science behind the phenomenon in accessible language, clearly describe the four distinct phases of the Breakout, and provide simple, step-by-step instructions on how to activate the Breakout "trigger." Compelling case histories and information on how to incorporate Breakouts into daily life are woven throughout the book.

Dr. Benson's previous discoveries have helped millions reduce the harmful effects of stress. The Breakout Principle now reveals how to maximize your untapped abilities and powers.Amazon.com Review
If self-help books usually fall short of delivering life changes, The Breakout Principle is a book of a different stripe: a science-based path toself-transformation. Herbert Benson, M.D. pulls together 30 years of mind-body research to describe the Breakout Principle: "a powerful mind-body impulse thatsevers prior mental patterns and--even in times of great stress or emotional trauma--opens an inner door to a host of personal benefits." Breakouts open the door todifferent kinds of peak experiences--self-awareness, creativity, productivity, athleticism, rejuvenation, and transcendence--and lead to lasting changes.

Benson explains the stages ofstress/struggle, release (during which you give up unresolved destructive or negative thought patterns), breakout/peak experience, and"new-normal" state. He balances the science behind his concepts with practical, how-to tips. For example, many different activities and types of experiences cantrigger your personal Breakout in the release stage, and Benson helps you figure out which ones might work for you: repetitive mental or physical activity, anabsorbing personal encounter, expression of your personal belief system, "total abandon" to an intense experience, altruistic activity, or filling your mind with adominant sensory impression. He and skillful co-author William Proctor illustrate points with case studies and personal reflections, making complex medical andphilosophical issues more easily accessible.

Benson, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and founding president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute, is well knownfor his mind/body research, especially his work on the relaxation response. His other books include The Relaxation Response, Beyond the RelaxationResponse: How to Harness the Healing Power of Your Personal Beliefs, and Timeless Healing. This powerful and empowering book is highlyrecommended as a guide for readers willing to do the work of making a life change. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finding Your Performance Spirit
Some do it in the shower, some do it in the woods, some do it with friends, and some do it in their sleep. If you don't do it; read this book. "It" is `Breakout' of prior mental and emotional patterns and into a state of mind where enhance performance flows. Athletes call it the zone, for others it is when solutions `pop' into the mind or conversations/presentations flow and `connect' with others. In this book, Herbert Benson, M.D. and William Proctor take the reader through the body's biological or anatomical response during the Breakout process, as they define the four-stages:
* Stage one begins with a hard mental or physical struggle.
* Stage two involves pulling the Breakout trigger, completely severing prior thoughts and emotional patterns - the doing "it" part.
* Stage three is the `peak experience', or performance element of the process.
* Stage four is a return to a `new-normal' state, meaning one with enhanced mind-body performance patterns.

In Part II of the book, the authors devote a chapter each to six types of Breakout resulting `peak experiences' - Self-Awareness, Creativity, Productivity, Athleticism, Rejuvenation, and Transcendence - before discussing how an intrinsic belief system can help trigger a Breakout and offer peak experiences beyond our analytical mind-set's capabilities.

Although the book is an easy read and does contain several descriptions of how the Breakout trigger might be pulled, I would not describe this as a self-help book. It more of an informative read than a practical how-to book for finding your `zone'.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why did I buy this book?
Why did I buy this book?It was one of those darn impulse purchases.I mean it's not terrible or anythingIn some ways it explains the well-known phenomena of creativity after intellectual struggle and more interestingly it provides an explanation of why meditation etc. may work. But there's not much substance and it is certainly not worth full price. Also towards the end it pushes religion on the reader. If this type of thing bugs you, be forewarned.

Dr. Benson's Breakout techniques have had a significant impact on my life, both in reducing stress and in advising elementary school teachers, whom I supervise. People who are interested in extending their knowledge of brain based learning and reducing stress that is causing chaos in our classrooms need to read this book! Product Description
Over 225 black and white photographs span six decades of baseball history in this stunning collection of Athletics images. From the days of Lefty Grove and Jimmie Foxx to Ferris Fain and Eddie Joost, the famous and forgotten fill these pages and recall the glory of Philadelphia Athletics baseball. The book covers the A's from their first year in the American League in 1901 all the way through their departure to Kansas City in 1955.

Culled from 14 public and private photo archives, this collection includes dozens of previously unpublished images. Many of the older photographs were locked away in dusty files for decades until appearing here for the first time. Printer's marks were removed and the detail in the images was revealed through careful restoration. Most of the photographs have been reproduced to near their original size to faithfully record what the photographer saw.

These photographs record the changing face of baseball through the century by documenting the evolution of equipment, ballparks, uniforms and batting styles. Players, managers, owners, and broadcasters--they're all here, with captions that bring their stories to life. From the glory days of the $100,000 infield to the agony of 1954. From Ben Shibe to Bobby Shantz and everyone in between. ... Read more

Product Description

With women's sport performance at an all-time high and continuing to rise, you need to be faster, stronger, and more agile in order to compete. Yet, until now, no training manual has specifically addressed female athletes' physiological, biomechanical, and anatomical needs.

Athletic Strength for Women presents effective exercise prescriptions to help you build a strength base and then convert that strength to speed and power in competition. The result is not only better performance but also fewer injuries. For example, exercises and programs for the lower body will improve hamstring and quadriceps strength ratios, providing enhanced takeoff power and landing strength and better protection for the knee. More than 120 targeted exercises and drills are provided to improve

-throwing, striking, swinging, and other upper-body skills;

-starting, stopping, jumping, cutting, turning, pivoting, and other lower-body maneuvers; and

-overall power and speed.
Written by David Oliver, former strength and conditioning coach for the U.S. women's soccer and basketball teams, and Dana Healy, department head for strength and conditioning at the United States Olympic Committee, Athletic Strength for Women contains general fitness and sport-specific performance tests. These tests are accompanied by normative tables that enable athletes to gauge strengths and weaknesses against those of their peers and set improvement goals.

The book also includes in-season, off-season, and preseason programs for all the major participation sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, and track and field. No matter what your sport, prepare your body to perform at full potential. The programs in Athletic Strength for Women will help you achieve a new level of athleticism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best advice for everything you do in your life
This is perhaps my all-time favorite book. The concepts and exercises will help you with every area in your life where you want to accomplish a goal.As a musician I found it to be wonderful and refreshing. It goes right along with"The Inner Game of Music'" and "A Soprano on her Head."Replacing the sports performance scenes with musical performing situations is a no-brainer.It's incredibly helpful to us performers who tend to be very down on ourselves and notoriously dim about mindset, self-talk, etc..

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I am in graduate school for Sports Psychology and this book hits at the heart of what works for athletes. This is an Eastern-thinking text, so if you do not agree with that philosophy, you will not like this book.
Not only can this book be a reference for the athlete, it is also a reference book for living.I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Tool for Committed Athletes
This book addresses most of the stumbling blocks many athletes encounter in their quest for excellence. It then suggests specific guidelines for achieving not only performance excellence but also an internal sense of calm and satisfaction with the effort and accomplishment.
The format is succinct and easily used as a reference when specific concepts need to be reviewed. It is not a deeply theoretical book. Rather, it is a very practical and, in my experience, highly effective friend. It has totally changed my approach to my sport (and to my life) with wonderful results.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the advanced...
This IS a book for novices.True Taoists would just have a copy of the Tao Te Ching and the I Ching and draw their own answers through introspection of these two primary documents. While I had hoped that this book would provide something of substance, the whole of the book can literally be summed up with, "Visualize how you want things to be and it will be so.Center.Take five easy breathes.Act as if and it will be so."The authors say this in EVERY chapter and with everychapter being template formatted to this mantra it gets VERY repetitive and exhausting.I cannot believe they got 300 pages out of the same text...

I also have trouble believing that the worldclass athletes alluded to within this book are so undisciplined that they need the simple affirmations provided to open their eyes to their true potential, especially martial artists. The affirmations provided get so much to the point of comedy that it is best to ignore them as you push through the book.(They reminded me of the Saturday Night Live skit, "I'm okay and I like me.")

This is a New Age book, not an enlightening text. (Though I acknowledge that once you decide to become enlightened, you are.) If you are an advanced athlete who understands even the basics of Taoism and how it can be applied to ALL ASPECTS of your life, this IS NOT a book for you. ... Read more

This book serves as a bridge between biomechanics and the practice of sport. By providing a detailed analysis of movement, it helps readers understand the important factors for maximizing performance. Valuable coverage is provided on the general characteristics of bones, joints, and muscles, as well as guidelines for flexibility and strength training that provide a firm theoretical framework for effective training. From this basis, the book explores the anatomy function of different parts of the body and examines the types of movement important in sports activities. * The book's unique approach features a rigorous application of biomechanics to sport training. * Mechanics are related to the use of muscles in specific sports. * Coverage is both theoretical and practical, making the book useful both for academic study and as a training aid. * Highly illustrated format helps readers understand key concepts and important details. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Old Book
I bought this old book used through Amazon.com and I got a great deal.

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in how the muscles and bones work together to make the body move.

It is muchbetter than Gray's Anatomy and better still than a workout book focused on athletic ability and targeted muscle exercises.

I like the general overview to each area with many sketches in a sequence of tightening field illustrations so that one sees the bigger picture and gets zeroed in as the discussion proceeds to the core of the matter.

My interest is in robotics, humanoid robotics, and I find that the perspective taken here, giving the real lowdown as it were, is essential to understanding how things work so that one can get on with figuring out how to do it differently with other materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars my new favorite book!
im currently using this book in the classroom with none other than Mr. France as the teacher! i find his book far superior to other sports medicine books that we have used. it is extremely informative and is very easy to use and learn from. there is a ton of busy work that can be done in the book, which tends to be slightly annoying at times, but is a very useful learning tool! if you havent already purchase this amazing novel!

The Athletic Eye written by Arthur Seiderman is a book that I enjoyed greatly, and would recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about the various important roles that the human eye plays in the world of sports today.Seiderman gives a great insight of visual exercises one can perform in order to increase visual skills for a particular sport. For example, he talks about how peripheral vision helps out a basketball player tremendously. Then, he goes on to get a picture demonstrated how to exercise your eyes in your own home in order to increase your peripheral vision!Overall, this book is a great book one should look into.Especially if you have a love for eyes and sports like myself. ...
