Product Description
This book is the first to introduce a multi-disciplinaryapproach to extending our understanding of air-sea interaction, where the atmospheric boundary layer, ocean mixed layer dynamics, andsurface are collectively treated with their physical, chemical andbiological components. The theme behind the book is `high resolution',where the general assumptions behind scaling theories are oftenviolated and new approaches and paradigms must be sought. Much of theresearch presented herein is based on theoretical advances during thepast decade, and special emphasis is given to field results of themarine boundary layer experiments carried out during the period1993-1996 west of California and in the seas of northernEurope. Given the nature of the subject, the material presented willbe valuable for boundary layer modellers, climate dynamicists, geophysicists, and engineers specializing in platform design andenergy, among others. This book may also serve as an advanceduniversity text for use either in the classroom, or as a reference forthe research or operational specialist. ... Read more

Product Description
Atmospheric aerosols play a large role in air pollution in urban areas and in regulating climate. They also play a role in the ongoing debate on global warming potentials of various species. To understand the proper roles of aerosols in the atmosphere, we need data on their physical characterization, their chemistry and appropriate models to project into the future. Apart from general discussions in textbooks, there are not very many monographs devoted to the aspects outlined above. This symposium series book will describe the characteristics of atmospheric aerosols, the chemistry of aerosols, and finally the interplay between aerosol modeling and global climate changes using specific case studies.

The book is organized into three sections: Characterization, Chemistry and Modeling of Atmospheric Aerosols. The characterization section of the book includes three chapters. The chapters include: The role of morphology on aerosol particle reactivity; The chemistry portion of the book covers several interesting topics including secondary aerosols and the chapters include: Surface activity of perfluorinated compounds at the air-water interface; Atmospheric chemistry of urban surface films; Photochemistry of secondary organic aerosol formed from oxidation of monoterpenes; Finally the modeling section of the book includes two very interesting chapters; Understanding climatic effects of aerosols: modeling radiative effects of aerosols;Environmental effects to residential New Orleans following hurricane katrina: indoor sediment, vapor-phase and aerosolized contaminants. ... Product Description
This volume summarises the result of an interdisciplinaryresearch programme entitled `Rehabilitation of the Atmosphere of theNew States of Germany - Effects on Terrestrial Ecosystems'.Before the unification of Germany, emission loads of SO2 anddust particles were up to 18-fold higher in East than in West Germany. However, emission rates have decreased significantly sincereunification in 1990, due to the breakdown of a large number ofindustrial and particularly lignite- fired powerplants and theimplementation of clean air technologies. In order to study theeffects of these dramatic changes in atmospheric chemistry onterrestrial ecosystems, comprehensive field studies were conducted inpine forest ecosystems along an historic gradient of atmosphericdeposition rates in the northeastern lowlands of Germany. The fast anddramatic reduction of dust particle and SO2 emissions offers aunique opportunity to test the role of SO2 and alkalineparticle deposition with regard to changes or damage to forestecosystems and whether the forest stands return to a state ofresilience. In this respect, this ecosystem experiment can be lookedupon as a roof experiment without a roof. ... Read more

Product Description
Oxidation and removal of atmospheric constituents involve complex sequences of reactions which can lead to the production of photo-oxidants such as ozone. In order to understand and model these complex reaction sequences, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of reaction mechanisms and accurate estimates of kinetic parameters for relevant gas-phase atmospheric reactions. This book presents recent advances in the field and includes the following topics: e.g. the oxidation of simple organic compounds, NOx kinetics and mechanisms, OH radical production and rate constants for the OH attack on more complex organic compounds, peroxy and alkoxy radical reactions, photo-oxidation of aromatic and biogenic compounds, and the interaction between radical species. ... Product Description
It is now possible to determine concentrations of trace constituents and pollutants in the lower atmosphere from space, a development which heralds a new era for tropospheric chemistry. The authors describe how to develop and validate methods for determining tropospheric trace constituents from satellite data, to encourage the use of these data by atmospheric chemists, and to explore the undoubted synergism which will develop between satellite and ground-based measurements, and will eventually give rise to a permanent observation system for the troposphere. The book comprises several comprehensive overviews, prepared by acknowledged experts in the field, together with a series of individual reports from investigators whose work represents the cutting edge of the subject. A variety of results, giving global distributions of several species and their modelling are reported. Most results stem from ESA satellite data, but there is also a account of the North American work in this field which has mainly concentrated on global distributions of ozone. It is fair to say that the field, as it develops, will revolutionize the way in which atmospheric chemistry is done. This timely book provides a good introduction for anyone with an interest in the future of the troposphere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sometimes overlooked aspect of atmospheric chemistry
When scientists began to study the chemistry of our atmosphere most of them concentrated only on chemical reactions between gaseous species, because the atmosphere is predominantly made up of gases. This seemingly sensible but restricted view -- called homogeneous atmospheric chemistry -- failed to account for much of the actual behavior and content of the atmosphere. Fortunately, a few scientists noted that the atmosphere also contains non-gaseous components, including clouds and soot and dust particles and investigated whether the interaction of these liquid and solid atmospheric species with the the atmosphere's gases -- heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry -- might be important. The answer was yes, heterogeneous chemistry is an important factor in the complex chemistry of the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this "maverick" view of the importance of heterogeneous processes in the atmosphere was either ignored or scoffed at for several years. Eventually NASA and the National Research Foundation decided to hold a national conference to bring together scientists from both sides of this debate to determine the true significance of heterogeneous processes in the atmosphere. Fortunately, significant agreement was reached that both homogeneous and heterogeneous processes are important in the study of atmospheric chemistry. This book is a collection of technical papers which resulted from that pivotal conference.

I must, in fairness, note that I have some bias regarding this book since I was a research scientist at NASA who helped organize that conference and I am the technical editor of this book which resulted from it. I should also note that this book was so widely distributed within the atmospheric science research community that it required a second printing and that Russian scientists thought highly enough of it to republish it in a Russian translation. ...
