5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative
I'm a patient. Self-help books written for a general audience can be great, but if you find yourself on the last page with too many unanswered questions about details or causes or evidence - if you want the final word (insofar as there can be one) - and you can deal with college-level material and some jargon, then this book is what you need. At least it's the best such book. You may find yourself reading several "textbooks" after this, as I did, but this is the best. Barkley is probably the single most respected and cited expert in the field. He wrote more than a third of the book and selected the best people in the field to write the other chapters. This is a summary and overview of all that was known scientifically as of 2006, and there's nothing newer that's nearly as comprehensive. As an academic work should, it has all the citations of peer-reviewed journal articles etc. that you'd need to get even further into the subject.

For an adult patient or the parent of an affected child, the knowledge you can gain here will allow you to better understand the particular form/nature of the disorder you're facing. It's said that every case of ADD is different - really different. No self-help book can address the nuances and peculiarities of an individual case. But armed with the scientific data in this book you can both get a more clinical look at your own case and be better able to read those self-help books with insight and a critical eye.

For primary care practitioners, mental health and social work professionals, educators, caregivers in specialized fields related to ADD, and any other professionals who might run into ADHD kids or the 4% to 8% (or so) of adults who have some form of the disorder: a plea from a patient who wasn't diagnosed until age 54. Please read this book. Please. Had anyone suggested to me that I might have ADHD just a year earlier, not to mention ten or thirty years earlier, I might have saved myself (and others) much pain and many difficulties. This book can help you make that difference for someone. And of course if you're routinely dealing with ADHD this book is a must-read.

Lots of researchers disagree with Barkley, though usually just in part. There's still much that's mysterious about this disorder. I don't want to imply that this book is the beginning and end of the subject. Only that it's a great overview and starting point for the scientifically-minded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for all clinicians
Thsi revision of Barkley's book is outstanding. The book is easier to read than past revisions, yet like the previous ones provides up-to-date research findings on ADHD.The chapters on school supports are matchless compared to other books by ADHD researchers/writers.Parents will probably find the book "heady", but no clinician should practice without having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but challenging.
This is the most complete explanation I've read on ADHD. It has been a challenging process but worth every minute and frustration. If you become familiar with this book you will be familiar with ADHD and will have a great reference at hand. If you have a child with ADHD or suspect the same you will get invaluable information if you can stick to it. This is definitely not "ADHD For Idiots"! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a FULL 5-stars, but I'm not done with it yet!
Love the book so far....I like how this mom is on a MISSION to find out exactly what triggers ADHD symptoms and doesn't just cover it up with a Band-Aid.I'd give it 5 stars once I'm done, I'm sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's perspective
I thoroughly enjoyed Merlin's book "Victory Over ADHD".As an educator, I found this to be a practical and informative resource. Her research is solid and her findings astounding. I currently teach high school at a single gender school.Too often, I watch my students struggle with ADHD. Many of my students seem over medicated. It is difficult to assist a student who is over medicated and lethargic.Merlin's approach to holistic healing suports a healthier and more effective manner of treatment. She recognizes the need to detoxify and alter lifestyle (nutrition). This makes sense to me.I recommend this work to the parents of my students. It is a great resource for educators.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid choice for those who want to help their child with ADHD
ADHD is not something that has to plague a young child, and one doesn't need to resort to drugs to combat it. "Victory Over ADHD: A Holistic Approach for Helping Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" is a guide for parents dealing with ADHD. Chapter after chapter discusses causes and solutions to common problems, making "Victory Over ADHD" a solid choice for those who want to help their child with ADHD.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
Deborah Merlin shows how conventional medicine totally failed to deal with these boys who had various traits of autism, ADHD, aspergers and Tourette's syndrome.Alternative medicine ended chronic ear infections, and later brought remarkable mental recovery with amino acid supplementaiton.

However, I have to rate the book lower, because a large section of the book by another author is not reliable information. As I have had a terrible time searching for what I could believe in nutrition, in the process of writing HONEST NUTRITION, I recognize what looks like exaggerations, perhaps bigotry; at least carelessness with truth. What Larry Cook writes could be very important, if you can discern what parts of it you can believe.

The last chapter, by a third author, brings our vital, generally unknown information about mercury toxicity.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for parents of kids with ADHD
Deborah Merlin's story of raising twin boys with ADHD is both compelling and instructive.

You will find yourself rooting for the boys as you read of their strugglesgrowing up, and for their mother as she fights the traditional health-caresystem.

Larry Cook adds his expertise in holistic medicine, making a solid scientific case for a more natural approach to ADHD and related conditions.

This is an excellent book that will change the life of any family with kids experiencing these problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Source for Comprehensive Assessment
Barkley & Murphy offer a superb resource for the beginning and seasoned clinician who seeks to provide thorough screening for the cluster of potential psychiatric issues surrounding the 'ADHD' phenomenon.

This resource is based on the findings of ongoing best practices research. It offers multiple refereces. And it offers many suggestions for ongoing assessment.

This resource is particularly useful for those clinicians who communicate regularly with primary care providers as a means of documenting progress or raising questions about modifying treatment strategies.

Finally, it serves to discover behavioral data which is so vital when considering medication as a therapeutic strategy.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
This is what I wanted. I don't really know how valid this is but it is a nice checklist to measure add in adults. It certainly is better than the computer tests. It is nice to have somthing objective for adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text on ADHD
The first edition of "Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : A Handbook for Diagnosis and Treatment" was generally considered a must-read for all Clinical Child Psychologists and other practitioners who worked or planned to work with children with behavior disorders. The second edition is even better, as it should be. This edition clarifies how we have learned much about ADHD in the past decade. The book's coverage of relevant literature, findings, and data-based theories and treatments makes it one of the very best books on ADHD available on the market. I recommend it to all who plan to work with behavior-disordered children. Also, this text should be in most public libraries to allow parents the opportunity to read accurate writings about ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Assessing Co-Morbid Emotional Factors
Dr. Barkley has contributed an extremely beneficial companion to his handbook for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. The rating forms are very useful for the clinician assessing ADHD and comorbid features. Dr.Barkley's discussion offers extremely helpful guidelines for assessment andtreatment of ADHD and various emotional-behavioral issues which mayaccompany or mimic ADHD. This volume is a must for any practicing health oreducational professional involved in the assessment and treatment of ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative reference text for study, review and treatment
I found this text to be a most useful resource for ADHD from a bio-psychosocial point of view. It included an exhaustive literature review of studies, of both children and adults, with ADHD. I also appreciated thediscussions on cause/ effect relationships. I highly recommend this textfor Physicians and Psychologists/Therapists working together and being onthe same page with patients suffering from and living with ADHD. ... Read more

Product Description
Winner of four national book awards, including Foreword Magazine's Psychology Book of the Year!
The science has been clear since 1994, when Adult AD/HD was declared a medical diagnosis. Still, the public harbors misconceptions, and that means millions suffer needlessly. And that includes millions of couples who can't understand why their lives together are so hard -- sometimes despite many attempts at couples therapy.

Everyone knows someone with adult AD/HD. Yet we misattribute the symptoms to anxiety, depression, or even laziness, selfishness, or moodiness. Moreover, we assume AD/HD means "little boys with ants in their pants." In fact, childhood hyperactivity goes "underground" as the person matures, resulting in a mentally restless state. (By the way, the former, and still better-known, official term is ADD, plus or minus Hyperactivity. The new term, AD/HD, uses a slash mark to indicate that hyperactivity is not central to the diagnosis.)

Meticulously researched by award-winning journalist Gina Pera, Is It You, Me, or Adult A.D.D.? is a comprehensive guide to recognizing the behaviors where you least expect them (on the road and in the bedroom, for example) and developing compassion for couples wrestling with unrecognized ADHD symptoms. It also offers the latest information from top experts, plenty of real-life details, and easy-to-understand guidelines for finding the best treatment options and practical solutions. The revolutionary message is one of hope for millions of people--and a joyous opportunity for a better life.

--Michele Novotni, Ph.D. Psychologist, Coach

Confirmatory brain neuroscience answers this speculation about Adult ADHD: It s a real problem with real and painful challenges, not a belief system.
-- Charles Parker, DO, Medical Director, CorePsych, author of Deep Recovery

... Gina Pera has combined a real feel for the disorder with sound reporting skills and the spice of those who tell the story best: the couples themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly useful, well-done book
This book is really useful. It is packed with a wealth of solid, well-supported information. It is also incredibly well-organized and well-written, so that information is accessible and easy to digest. It manages to go into just enough depth on each issue, maintaining a good balance of having the right level of detail.

If your partner has ADHD, or you think they might, get this book.

The big question I have is how many people have spent years with a spouse and it hasn't occurred to either of them to look into whether adult ADHD might explain their issues.I was lucky to stumble across an article at the New York Times, which struck me as a good description of our marriage. In the comments to that article Gina Pera's book was highly praised, so that led me to the book.If that hadn't happened, I would still have no idea.

Distractibility and impulsivity are the better known symptoms. But if your spouse seems unable to remember their own actions; has difficulty linking cause and effect; confuses what they meant to do with what they did - those may also be symptoms and you may want to explore further.

Also, one of the things she states in the chapter on "What to do Now" is "Get trained in conflict negotiation, communications techniques, and boundary setting."If anyone has suggestions for other good books on these topics, I would appreciate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on the market for those living with an ADD partner
This book rocks!Only someone who has NO clue what it is like to live with ADD in your household on a daily basis or just has no clue in general would not give this book 5 stars! Finally, a book written from a different perspective that does not place all the blame on the non-ADD partner to "fix" what is wrong in their relationship with their ADD partner or to just try to convince the non-ADD partner to stop being so "controlling" because ADD is just a "gift" that we just have to learn to live with....one that can lead to infidelity, financial issues, safety issues, and much marital strife (but it's a gift?!?!) Thank you Gina!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT READ if you have ADHD - You will feel like an incompetent jerk
As Ms Pera accurately points out, we with ADHD have self esteem issues, so this book, that vividly describes every one of my faults - to their extremes, and several other people's ADHD manifestations which I will take ownership of because I am the face of AHDH, has done more damage to my marriage than help it.

My lack of focus has NEVER endangered my children, but now my husband is sure it is only a matter of time.He now feels completely justified in blaming everything on me because this book makes it clear that AHDH will destroy the non-ADHD partner's life.

Perhaps is it my "cognative distortion" that leads me to view this as a book that pushes all of the blame in a relationship to the oh-so-pathetic ADHD cripple.

After reading through this book over a course of a couple of months, for some practical advice that will help me and my some-other-mental-illness-I-suspect-OCPD-but-refuses-to-be-diagnosed spouse, I'm left with "You have ADHD.Your partner is perfect. You (no, I can't dissociate myself from my illness) are the cause for all of your spouse's misery. You are irresponsible. You are incapable of "normal" cognative function, or behaving normally in any relationship.Meds and therapy may help."Lovely.Now my spouse's blame has been reinforced, despite 3 years of meds and some darn good therapy.

My reality is my reality.Who is the judge of what is "distorted?"Where is the chapter that says, "Hey - non-ADHD partner -- change a few of your own behaviors and cognitions to adapt to your partner's ADHD."

We afflicted with ADHD don't typically understand "normal" people, so we tend to congregate with others who are like us.Where is the chapter for the non-ADHD partner that says, "Take a look in your own mirror."Maybe I didn't look hard enough - it's the ADHD, ya know. Can't focus ... (but that's no excuse).

One of our biggest fights recently was because I read my husband something from this book.He interpreted that to mean I was claiming free license to react with anger, because that's what "people with ADHD do."

The non-ADHD partner is graciously let off the hook for all of his behaviors, because ADHD is really the culprit. What happens when the ADHD's behavior changes, but the non-ADHD partner is still a jerk?

So -- thanks, so much! Now my family gives me a subtle pat on my 40 year old head and says, "It's ok, her memories are (pause, hushed tone)distorted."

Feel free to chalk my dislike of this book up to "She has ADHD, so she missed the point and she will obviously read more into it than she should..." ...yeah... and...

5-0 out of 5 stars ADHD & Relationships: Not Just A Communication Problem
Is it You, Me, or Adult ADD provides a thorough and understandable explanation of the complex interpersonal dynamics in a relationship impacted by ADHD that can leave both partners feeling confused and misunderstood.Author and former journalist Gina Pera approaches this challenging topic with keen insight, sensitivity, and objectivity.Gina's advice isn't just based on theory - she has extensive experience as advocate for ADHD awareness, and many years of direct experience leading ADHD support groups. She presents a balanced and fact-based explanation of ADHD and the many effects it can have on relationships - and the challenges of finding effective support and treatment resources. Most importantly, this book provides effective and field-tested strategies to help partners understand and address the challenges of ADHD. With the right treatments for ADHD, relationships can be healthy, rewarding, and enduring. This book is a wonderful starting point for anyone struggling to recognize the signs of ADHD in their relationship and how to take care of themselves as they work towards an improved relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life and sanity
If you even suspect your spouse has ADD or ADHD I'd say get this book. I've read them all and this one finally tells the TRUTH. I feel validated, and relieved, and a little bit more sane. The truth is a powerful thing. God Bless Gina Pera. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for people that are dealing with ADD
This is a good book for people that are dealing with ADD. I had no problems ordering from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Helps ADD People do Well in the Workplace
The book includes: 1) "Maps, Guidebooks, and Travelogues for a Hunter in a Farmer's World," 2) Stories by people with ADD describing how they succeeded and what they learned, 3) Workplace success stories, and 4) School success stories.Much of the material relates to the workplace. It is practical and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for ADD'ers
Thom Hartmann is one of the best writers on ADD, for ADD'ers. Why? Because he doesn't label people with ADD as having brain disease and broken. His Hunter in a Farmer's World Model makes so much sense. It's been dissed by Barkley and others, but in the last year hard genetic research has come in proving the theory, and other ADD researchers have reached the same conclusions.
But that's not why you should buy this book Buy it because it gives tons of examples of people with ADD who have had success in all different aspects of life. The fact is, ADD people are the ones with ants in their pants who change the world. Who don't sit there and settle for the ordinary. They do things-- start companies (entrepreneurs,) make noise about problems (call them politicians and activists,) investigate stuff (detectives, reporters, scientists who don't wash test tubes and replicate the ADD scientists visionary work.)

So read about how ADD'ers make it, how they succeed, and start feeling not only hopeful, but perhaps even a bit cocky about being an ADD'er or knowing one.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADD Success Stories - Awesome
As a "hunter" myself, I never could get past all that boring ADD diagnotic stuff about receptors, etc. This was the first book on ADD that was interesting enough to read.It confirmed, for me, what I thought allalong.I'm not defective, just different. Many gifted people throughouthistory have been just tormented by our boring farmer society.Thisbook has also helped my to deal with my child's school.I had beenfighting with them for years.Another thing that I think is interestingis the Native American (or Nomadic European tribes)connection.I hadspeculated about it myself. Now when someone tells me they're ADD, I askif they have Native American blood, and so far the answer is always yes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST collection of suggestions for dealing with ADD
Of the 4 ADD books I've read so far, I've definitely enjoyed this one most.I think it has the most practical tips, a good explanation for what's known about ADD, and a supportive, but not condescending tone.

Ieven liked the Hunter/Farmer model/theory/metaphor/mythology of ADDers justbeing another type of person, rather than a defective one.He makes someconvincing arguments for the plausibility of this theory, yet doesn't hityou over the head with it.I don't personally need the ego boost of sayingI'm a Hunter, versus those slow Farmers.:-)But it is somewhatcomforting to think you're just wired differently, instead of wireddefectively.

Anyway, the best part is the tips from his previous readers. I've read through them and highlighted a lot.Now I have to go back andwrite summaries, and try to apply one idea a week, rather than trying to doeverything at once. ... Read more

I have ADHD...didn't figure it out and get diagnosed until I was 50 years old, but as a teacher and a parent of ADHD kids I'd have to say that Thomas Phelan is right on the money on this topic! He's easy to read and has great insight and solutions for situations we face.Too bad more people don't realize that ADHD is a treatable physical condition and too many children are punished for their symptoms because of ignorance of the facts. This is a really good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it now and throw in 123 magic too!
All About Attention Deficit Disorder should be given out in doctor's offices along with the diagnosis!
It's an excellent and easy to read resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers of any child who has ADD/ADHD characteristics. This book also includes fantastic information for adults who maybe didn't have the "label" as a child but can recognize the symptoms in themselves or a parent who can see the symptoms in themselves now that their child has a label.
I am a special education teacher, not a medical doctor, so I am not allowed to give out any medical or medication advice to parents in school based meetings.
This is the information I would share at those meetings if I could. The straightforward information in clear to understand language with a sense of humor to go with it is a must read!
I also highly recommend adding 1,2,3 Magic to your cart. It's the behavioral "instructional" manual that all children should have tied to their ankle when they come out of the womb. It's an especially helpful read with ADHD and other special needs children with a mental age of at least 2 years but it's a system that works with children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Step
This book isn't meant to replace a visit to your family physician, but to educate and inform parents so they can make the right decision. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, this book will help you get a better handle on the disorder, help you understand what your child is going through, and help you help your doctor properly treat your child. If you suspect your child has ADD, but aren't ready to take your child to the doctor, this is a good first-step. Get All About Attention Deficit Disorder, read it, and if you feel your child meets the criteria for ADD, contact your family physician for an appointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive
Dr. Phelan uses real life examples to illustrate his didactic narrative. He explains concepts clearly and cuts quickly to the heart of important issues. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the process getting an evaluation for AD/HD. He advocates a thorough, systematic approach to diagnosis. He explains how to make sure that the professionals have covered all of the bases.

He discusses how AD/HD can affect both adults and children. However, he tends to put more emphasis or child and adolescent issues.

Dr. Phelan does not pull punches or sugar-coat the issues. He makes it clear that AD/HD can make life challenging for individual and family. This directness is both the strength and weakness of this tape (and book.) The first couple of chapters tend to emphasize the difficulties. You have to wait a while before you get to the parts that give you some hope. The first couple of chapters might have you thinking about trading your child in for a non-defective model. But stick it out--by the end of the book you will have a clearer idea of the steps you can take to resolve difficulties.

I am pleased that this book is available in an audiocassette version. Many families affected by AD/HD are already spread too thin. They may not have the time or the attention span to sit down and read an entire book. This particular audiocassette was produced in a professional manner. Dr. Phelan reads didactic material and actors dramatize family anecdotes. This breaks up any monotony and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A major contribution to ADD studies, discussions, and plans.
Now in a newly updated edition, Thomas Phelan's All About Attention Deficit Disorder continues to be one of the most "readerfriendly" introductions and explanations for parents, teachers andcare-givers of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Phelan covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for ADD children and adults. Highly recommendedfor personal, professional, school and community library collections, AllAbout Attention Deficit Disorder will provide information, tools, andemotional support needed by anyone dealing with a loved one, student, orpatient with this difficult, biologically based, psychologically impactingdisorder. ... Product Description
Paul Wender began his career treating children with ADHD 37 years ago and has treated adults with the disorder for almost 30 years. His exhaustive research and insight gained from clinical practice led to the first book about ADHD in children (Minimal Brain Dysfunction in Children, 1971). Continuing research revealed that in many instances ADHD persisted into adult life, and that adult ADHD included symptoms that were not present in childhood. These findings resulted in his 1995 book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults. He also authored the first book for the parents of children with ADHD, The Hyperactive Child in 1974. Now, in this revised and updated edition of ADHD he presents the definitive resource on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In his discussion of ADHD treatments, Wender stresses that drug therapy remains the most effective in treating the disorder. He adds, however, that psychological techniques, when combined with medication, can produce further improvement. Most important, Wender offers practical--and extensive--instructions on how parents of an ADHD sufferer can best help their child. Throughout, Wender supplies extensive case histories of children and adolescents with ADHD, as well as accounts of the experience of ADHD in adults as perceived by both patients and their families. In addition, the book contains valuable information on where to seek help, as well as on the kinds of diagnostic tests currently available. Finally, in an appendix to the volume, the author includes instructions on how adults can self-screen for the disorder. Now a classic work, ADHD grants parents and adults whose lives have been touched by this disorder an indispensable source of help, hope, and understanding. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This ground-breaking work argues that the behavioral manifestations of attention deficit disorders--hyperactivity and impulsivity--represent a person's attempts at self-regulation. The authors view Attention Deficit Disorder as a problem with the regularity, control and fluency of attention; people with ADD have trouble balancing the demands of sustained focus against forces such as novel, intense, or affectively driven preferences. The essence of attention dysfunction thus transcends the issues of a child's (mis)behaviors to its cognitive, affective, social and personal aspects.

Section 1 presents the conceptual underpinnings: the history of ADD, the nature of attention, the authors' view of attention as a self-regulation system, and the impact of this view on issues of motivation and social/emotional status. Section 2 addresses the implications for instructional practice--in school generally, and in reading, math and written language specifically. The final chapter presents case studies demonstrating how this conception should shape student programs. This book is an important addition to the thinking and practice relating to students--and adults--with ADD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent exploration
This book examines the many systems that come into play in the mind, and attempts to analyze how they interact. It goes way beyond a child's inability to pay attention in class or sit in a seat.

For example, the authors discuss the question of motivation -- a big one for kids who are often blamed for not trying hard enough. They cite the importance of meaning to motivation, and point out that external motivators, such as tokens and teacher exhortations, are not likely to be effective with the child because they have little real personal meaning for the child.

As I read this book, I often think that at last I am reading descriptions of ADD that match the complexity of what I actually see in my child.

The book seems intended for professionals rather than parents. It is pretty technical in its discussions of the brain, neurotransmitters, etc., and cites a lot of studies. It is not light or quick reading.

On the other hand, if you're tired of reading the same simple descriptions of ADHD, with a prescription for a token and reward system, you might welcome the depth of this book. It doesn't soove your problems, but it helps you gain a deeper understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents with ADD/ADHD children need to read this book.
As the mother of an 8 year old boy who has ADHD (only recently diagnosed), this book has been a lifesaver for my son and me. My son was literally failing to learn to read, almost living in the principals office, andstruggling socially. His reading is now at or above grade level (with someremaining phonemic challenges). Four weeks ago, he started at a publiccharter school where he is no longer labeled as being "bad" forhis "ADD" behaviors. And socially he will be part of astructured program to teach him appropriate behaviors. This book not onlyexplains the challenges that interfere with these children's abilities inall areas of their lives but gives solutions. Solutions that schools andparents can implement for success. My son is living proof of how importantthis information is to changing the direction of a child's life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars As Annoying as ADD itself!
If you are the annoyed partner of a person with ADD, you will be even more annoyed when you read this book. Its author suffers from untreated ADD, which he apparently feels has been "healed" by a combination of spiritual faith, wishful thinking and his (evidently) saintly wife. His writing "style" reflects the annoyingly disjointed patterns of a person with ADD; he goes off-topic every few sentences in a manner which is unhelpful to the reader, to say the least. I had bought this book in the hope of finding some useful tools for my marriage, only to find that it piqued my already stressed state of mind. Reading it was like talking to a drunk alcoholic in a bar about how to cope with your partner's alcoholism; I found myself feeling quite hopeless. This book is worse than useless.Honey Are You Listening?: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Your MarriageHoney, Are You Listening? (Minirth Meier New Life Clinic)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped or expected
Note: This review is based on the original release of the book as it was all that was available at the local library.

I was excited to find a resource that dealt with ADD and Marriage. However, this book was not what I hoped it would be.

First, I felt that the author could be overly negative about his own ADD at times. It sounded as if he was struggling with some of his own feelings of inadequacy based on his ADD tendencies. Although living with ADD can be difficult I don't believe that it has to be such a negative issue and I think he could have approached it in a more positive light.

Second, the entire book was based on his own marriage. This would not have been a problem with me if he wasn't a clinical psychologist. As he dealt with other people with the same problems in his everyday life I would have found it more useful if he used examples from other couples as well as his own marriage. It was assumed that all ADD marriages are like his own. For example they often talked about how the ADD spouse is extremely right-brained and that the non-ADD spouse is extremely left-brained. However, in my own experience I have found that my husband has some left-brained tendencies and that I have some right-brained tendencies. I felt that there was too much of a push to label us as all one way or the other way.

Third, it sounded as if he were advising the non-ADD spouse to become a baby-sitter for the ADD spouse. He did point out that the ADD spouse should take personal responsibility for him or her self but the majority of the solutions were about how the non-ADD spouse can help "fix" the problems of the ADD spouse.

I did find a few helpful items within the book; however, only a few paragraphs of helpful information doesn't warrant a purchase of this book.

On a positive note, I did like the fact that his wife had written parts of the book. I would have enjoyed hearing more from her just as a way to balance the marriage advice given instead of having most of it written from one perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
I found the stories from Mrs. Fowler very helpful. It was helpful to realize that others have the same frustrations. Also, gave me more insight into my spouses behavior. However, the author, who has ADD, seems to forget who his audience is at times. He often writes to those with ADD rather than the non-ADD spouse. Also seems to focus on the non-ADD spouse making accomodations rather than meeting in the middle. I didnt mind the religious references until he went so far as to say he could relate better than most people to Jesus because his ADD gave him similar personality traits. Wish his wife had written the book instead!

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely explains things, but...
It was a definite relief to read examples and "symptoms" that I've been dealing with in my marriage, and this book does help me understand where my spouse is coming from.As another reviewer said, it does have religious references peppered throughout, but they are from the perspective that this is the author's interest and hobby. It could as easily have been Greek mythology or basketball, it was that inoffensive and not at all pushy. My biggest concern with the book is feeling that the author at times is telling me to just paste on a smile and deal with some of our biggest problems in a positive and supportive manner, as if I just have to take it, rather than the ADD spouse might need to work on his/her behavior a bit more.Since the author does have ADD and does have a very meek and supportive wife, I'm wondering if that's supposed to be his idea of the "ideal" partnership, rather than having BOTH partners work together to meet in the middle.I preferred "A.D.D. and Romance: Finding Fulfillment in Love, Sex, & Relationships" by Jonathan Halverstadt (that author also has ADD).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Look at ADD from inside a marriage
This book is a revised version of one I got from our local library. It is a refreshing look at the interactions that are needed in any relationship where ADD/ADHD is a factor. It got 4 stars from me because some parts are overly talky, the beginning of the book was the best part for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and educational read
To be honest I never actually managed to read this book from cover to cover. However, I have found the book to be useful and regularly refer to it when I have questions. The first few chapters of the book, reads like someone's thesis research and may not be all that interesting if you're just looking for useful tips and strategies. However, further into the book one can find some very useful information. For example Chapter 9 looks at the implications of being a post-secondary student with ADD. In Chapter 10 the focus is on study skills for the ADD student. Chapter 11 looks at some of the ADD related implications for educators. Also the back of the book has a thick appendix section and is filled with information for students, administrators, as well as instructors. If you are a student or educator who's interested in post-secondary ADHD issues and are interested in research on the topic, then this book is worth owning. I can't say that this book is a must-have for the average ADHD student, but is a worthwhile purchase if you are seriously interested in the topic of ADD in the post secondary environment. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars ADTD Book
I do not know why I am reviewing this product in that I did not purchase this book

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful tools in my parent/prof toolbox!
As a parent of two ADHD kids (now grown) and an ADD Coach, I found this book to be a wonderful resource and help to plan various behavioral stratagies. There are 46 different behaviors listed that are common to those kids with ADD/ADHD. Each behavior is broken down into step by step pratical stratagies. The Appendix also includes sample schedules, reward menus, recordkeeping charts, behavior contracts, etc.

It covers in detail SIMPLE stratagies (but not always EASY as DEALING with kids of ADD/ADHD is not always easy) of the 3 basic characteristics of ADHD: Inattentive, Impulsive, and Hyperacitve. A virtual recipe book of parenting skills.

Some of the behaviors this book give stratagies for are:

Does not listen to what others are saying.
Needs questions and directions repeated.
Is disorganized with possessions.
Has difficulty concentrating.
Does not remain on task to do homework.
"Forgets" to do things.
Starts but does not complete homework.
Will not independently perform chores.
Cannot organize responsibilities.
Refuses to do what he/she is told, goes on doing what he/she was doing, does the opposite of what he/she is told, etc.
Interrups others.
Is impulsive.
Is easily frustrated.
Intrudes on others.
Is easily angered, annoyed, or upset.
Ignores consequences of behavior.
Fidgets, squirms, etc.
Appears restless.
Cannot adjust behavior to different situations.
Runs in the mall, pushes and makes noises in line, yess in stores, etc.

I frequently used the information from this book over the years as a parent and as an ADD Coach. Hawthorne also puts out similar format of book for adolescents and adults with ADD/ADHD. ... Read more

Very impressed with the current information found in this book - there are many adult ADD books on my shelf, but this is in my top 3 books for everyday referals...worth purchasing!

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 Old 2 B Relevant
Murphy's "Out of the Fog" was published in 1995 -- that's 11 years behind the times! While he might include some informative and interesting stuff here, ADD/ADHD research is piling up with new insights and implications for personal and social-political use.

The very best new work out there, as of 2006, is Thomas E. Brown's "Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults." Brown, a psychiatry prof at Yale's School of Medicine and the associate director of the Yale Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders, hasn't written a self-help guide here; instead, he's crafted the best overview of current thinking about ADD. He answers doubters -- and, refreshingly, discusses why a number of doubts about the very existence of ADD exist.

If you really want to know about ADD, this is the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of the Fog: Treatment Options and Coping Strategies for Adult Attention Deficit Disorders
After completing this review, I realized that if you have ADHD (like me), you may need to take a break in order to make it through to the end.
I am experienced reader of books on the subject of ADHD. The first thing I noticed about the book was the small font and paragraphs which extended very close to the edge of the pages. This is not ADHD-friendly. That said, an effort is made to use summary paragraphs. However, as most all ADHD books feature blocking information, summarizing, and reviewing. I tend to expect this rather than appreciate it. Another feature of the book which threw me off (repeatedly): randomly placed (long and winding) case studies (e.g. "Amy had just been diagnosed ...).
Per the DSM IV, "ADHD" is the proper term and covers three sub-types. The term ADD is no longer used (it's a sub-type under "ADHD").The author explains this and then, states: "In the interest of simplicity, we will use the term ADD to refer to all three forms." I stopped and scratched my head ... does he believe his reader base to be so inattentive as to render them unable to deal with an extra letter to describe the very condition about which the book is written? That leads to the second question, does simplicity really call for the incorrect labeling of the subject matter of you book? Lastly, even before the DSM IV change, "ADD" as a label leaves out hyperactivity (and combined) - making it simple, but wrong. Why not refer to it properly and in doing so, encompass the entirety of those with the DSM IV's definition of ADHD?
Okay, this guy is old school and wants to save "H" for "simplicity" of reading. I moved on. Shortly thereafter, I got the sensation that I needeed to break out the pom-poms. I don't read about my ADHD to learn all the "wonderful" things I can accomplish despite my condition. At this point, I was becoming impatient. I flipped to the front of the book and noted it is still on the first version which is dated 1995. I knew the medication chapter should make for some useless reading. I had to flip to the chapter covering medication to find out just how useless. As expected, the chapter is pitifully outdated. Without getting specific, I will just let you know that the chapter spends most of its time on Ritalin as the AD(H)D medication and Prozac as a good anti-depressant. Don't waste your time. "Scattered Minds" by Adler (2006) offers medication information to such a greater extent, that fact alone would justify choosing "Scattered Minds" over "Out of the Fog" if you had only once choice.
So, why the 3 stars - kinda high based on my gripes, huh? I set aside my "ADD" label annoyance, worked through the small font and crammed pages, long and winding case studies, and woefully outdated medicaion infomation. What I found is this book offers very useful coping strategies for Adult ADHD. The book also does an excellent job of identifying problems ADHD creates (which leads to the coping advice). The author knows the subject very well. In this regard, the book is better than average.
I have to mention the book's information regarding how to cope with everyday life. You need to take advantage of technology's cutting edge equipment: "computers, fax machines, calculators, and voicemail." Wow. The calculator? It sure is an improvement over that time-intensive abacus.
Those with ADHD will find the layout of this book poor to the point to classify it as a non-starter. If you desire to understand a loved-one's condition, you would certainly benefit from the information (except medication and technology) provided. If you are looking to get your ADHD life under control, I suggest "10 Simple Solution to Adult ADD" (Sarkis, 2005) because it is laid out with the intended audience in mind. It is a quick hitting, information intensive read. (Yes, Sarkis also calls it ADD - oh well.)

I set aside my "ADD" label annoyance, worked through the small font and crammed pages, long and winding case studies, and woefully outdated medicaion and technology infomation.
If you are looking to get your ADHD life under control, I suggest "10 Simple Solution to Adult ADD" (Sarkis, 2005) because it is laid out very well for those who struggle to keep focus. It is a quick hitting, information intensive read. (Yes, Sarkis also calls it ADD - oh well.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Out of the Fog: Treatment Options and Coping Strategies for Adult Attention Deficit Disorders
This book has been very helpful so far. It is giving me new ways to think about old problems.I'm only half-way through, but am trying to get a handle on the time management/organizational problems with the help of one of the strategies suggested.I would imagine that most of this information would seem very obvious to the "normal" person, but to those of us who are "in the fog", it is invaluable. Thanks for writing this book Dr. Murphy!
