Product Description
This book investigates the issue of racism in sport to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers Indigenous history, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, everyday life, football culture and the emergence of Indigenous players in the game of Australian Football. It does this by drawing on a variety of social, cultural and historical themes and arrives at a greater understanding of what it means to be an Indigenous person living in Australia for the last 220 years. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970s and 1980s. This book, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballers contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This book offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. ... Read more

Excerpt: Australian rules football, also officially known as Australian football, is a variant of football played outdoors between two teams of 18 players, plus four interchange players, on large oval-shaped grass fields (often modified cricket fields), with a ball in the shape of a prolate spheroid. The game is commonly referred to as football, Aussie rules or (colloquially) as footy. In New South Wales and Queensland, where it has lower popularity, it is often known (erroneously) as AFL, after the Australian Football League. The primary aim of the game is to score goals by kicking the ball between the middle two posts of the opposing goal. The winner is the team with the higher total score at the end of the fourth quarter. Except for special circumstances, if the score is tied, a draw is declared. Players may use any part of their body to advance the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled, for example players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed and players must not get caught holding the ball. Unlike most similar sports, there is no offside rule, and players can roam the field freely. Possession of the ball is in dispute at all times except when a free kick is paid. A distinctive feature of the game is the mark, where players anywhere on the field who catch a ball from a kick (with specific conditions), are awarded a free kick. Australian rules is a contact sport, in which players can tackle using their hands or use their whole body to obstruct opponents. Dangerous physical contact (such as a pushing an opponent in the back), interference when marking and deliberately slowing the play are discou... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2403 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A Chinese Australian is an Australian of Chinese heritage. In the 2006 Australian Census, 669,890 Australian residents identified themselves as having Chinese ancestry, either alone or with another ancestry. The early history of Chinese Australians had involved significant immigration from villages of the Pearl River Delta in Southern China. Less well known are the kind of society Chinese Australians came from, the families they left behind and what their intentions were in coming. Many Chinese were lured to Australia by the gold rush. (Since the mid-19th century, Australia was dubbed the New Gold Mountain after the Gold Mountain of California in North America.) They sent money to their families in the villages, and regularly visited their families and retired to the village after many years, working as a market gardener, shopkeeper or cabinet maker. As with many overseas Chinese groups the world over, early Chinese immigrants to Australia established Chinatowns in several major cities, such as Sydney (Chinatown, Sydney), Brisbane (Chinatown, Brisbane) and Melbourne (Chinatown, Melbourne). ... Product Description

Twenty years ago, Saturday Afternoon Fever told us the story of the central place that sport can hold in both a personal and a national identity. Since the 1980s, however, much has changed, and this special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport re-examines the position of sport in the hearts and minds of Australians, comparing the cultural history and analysis that emerged from the original classic text with the subsequent developments that have at once transformed Australian sport and established certain unchangeable qualities within it.
