Product Description
This controversial study of George ('Black') Robinson, first Chief Protector of Aborigines in Australia, reveals a man long held to be the worthy civilizer and Christianizer of Tasmanian Aborigines to have been a monster of deceit and a betrayer of those it was his role to protect - a man who made perhaps the most repellent contribution of all to what was to become the decimation of Tasmania's Aborigines. ... Product Description
This original ethnography brings indigenous people's stories into conversations around troubling questions of social justice and environmental care. Deborah Bird Rose lived for two years with the Yarralin community in the Northern Territory's remote Victoria River Valley. Her engagement with the people's stories and their action in the world leads her to this analysis of a multi-centred poetics of life and land. The book speaks to issues that are of immediate and broad concern today: traditional ecological knowledge, kinship between humans and other living things, colonising history, environmental history, and sacred geography. Now in paperback, this award-winning exploration of the Yarralin people is available to a whole new readership. The boldly direct and personal approach will be illuminating and accessible to general readers, while also of great value to experienced anthropologists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of breed
There are very few writers who have been able to respectfully penetratethe aboriginal culture and still preserve what is sacred. Rose's bookimmerses the reader into another reality, and she does so withoutsuperficial glorification or gratuitous pandering. Much better known inAustralia than in the US (where the number of the books available aboutaboriginals is limited), this book is the best I've found. I recommend itto the reader who wants to get past the tour guide/New Age fare and into amuch more authentic point of view. ... Read more

Excerpt: Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly (formally, the Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory) is the unicameral legislature of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It sits in the Legislative Assembly Building located on Civic Square, close to the centre of the city of Canberra. It was created by four acts of the Commonwealth Parliament in 1988, including the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government) Act 1988. The first election was held on 4 March 1989 and the assembly first sat on 11 May that year. Until this point, the ACT had been directly administered by the Commonwealth Government. It replaced the House of Assembly (also known for a period as the Legislative Assembly), which existed from 1976 to 1986, but had no executive power, with a principal function of advising the Commonwealth on matters relating to the Territory. The Legislative Assembly has 17 members, elected for four-year terms by the Hare-Clark system, a variation of the Single Transferable Vote form of proportional representation. The 17 members come from three constituencies - Brindabella and Ginninderra, which have five members, and Molonglo, which has seven members. The Assembly was originally elected by a modified d'Hondt system, but a 1992 referendum suppo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=579454 ... Read more

Chapters: Crown Prosecutor, Australian Takeovers Panel, Solicitor-General of Australia, Australian Government Solicitor, Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Crown Prosecutors are the public prosecutors in the legal system of Australia. Crown Prosecutors represent the Crown in right of the Commonwealth and in right of each State or Territory in criminal proceedings. Crown Prosecutors are appointed not elected and not public servants; they are private counsel briefed by the Director of Public Prosecutions for particular cases. Their mixed caseload as prosecutor and defence counsel, with the consequent ability to see both sides, is widely seen as an advantage of the system. Both the Commonwealth and the Australian States and Territories can make criminal laws under the Constitution of Australia, so Crown Prosecutors deal with both state and federal offences. The typical Crown Prosecutor, often a Queen's Counsel, will have extensive experience as defence counsel as well as prosecuting counsel. There are similarities between the role of the Crown Prosecutor in Australia and the: ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3233341 ... Read more

Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The 2009 to 2010 Australian federal budget was released on 12 May 2009 by the Treasurer of Australia, Wayne Swan. Swan has commented that the budget will be tougher than in previous years. "Projected government revenue has fallen by $200 billion since the last budget because of the global economic crisis." There were many allegedly planned leaks which released a number of headline details and bad news in the weeks beforehand. Real GDP Inflation A $210 billion decrease in revenue was forecast over the next four years, with the 2009-10 deficit expected to be in excess of $50 billion. Labor suggested that the decrease in revenue, brought about by the global financial crisis, was the primary reason for the deficit,. Labor budgetary policy on taxation is to keep it below the 2007-2008 level of 24.7% of GDP over the medium term. After taking into account regulatory changes to eliminate "tax minimisation" through employee share schemes, taxation receipts come in at 22% of GDP. The government has not indicated whether it will be modifying its target for 2010-2011, in light of the forecast contraction in growth. Overall expenditure is expected to increase in 2009/2010 by 1.6% of GDP. The key feature of the budget was a third round of spending to provide long-term stimulus. Overall, spending has increased by 4.6% of GDP since the last Howard/Costello budget (2007/2008). Labor budgetary policy separates aged care from other welfare expenditure. The budget saw synchronised changes across the public sector as the government decided to lift the pension age and also moved to lift the superann...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22740261 ... Product Description
This book examines the programs introduced by the Australian Government between 1989 and 1998 aimed at responding to inadequate incomes among farmers. The policies were developed and frequently reviewed in the context of the Government?s structural adjustment objectives for the farm sector and related drought response policies. The future of Australian agriculture is being shaped by the Commonwealth?s rural adjustment policies, however there has been little public debate about the direction of these policies. The focus has been on the means and on instrumental goals such as economic efficiency with little consideration given to the environmental and social implications.Australian government policies towards farm poverty provide an insight into the dilemmas of policy making when the policy ends are not clear and different values are represented unequally in the policy process. ...
