Another good Australian Centenary History
This a well written book covering the Royal Australian Air Force
from its origins as the Australian Flying Corps in World War 1 to
2001. The author expresses forthright opinions on politicians and
on senior RAAF officers.
As regards World War 2 he emphasises the significant contribution
made by Australian aircrew to the allied bomber offensive against
Germany and stresses the very high casuality rate.
He discusses the main aircraft types used by the force.
There are good photographs of significant players and aircraft.

2005 Biography of one of the best Aussie Generals of WW2 - who also served in DunsterForce in WW1
Lifted this review from the Australian Defense Association. Seems like an interesting book.

Of all the historical genres, biography is the hardest to write well. The biggest challenge for the biographer being the proper placement of the biographical subject in the context of his or her time. If authors do not provide enough historical background their subjects, as British historian Norman Gash suggests, become `larger than life because they are shown on a strangely empty stage'. On the other hand, if the subject is submerged by too much historical detail and disappears from the book for pages at a time, then, as Lincoln biographer Stephen B. Oates warns, there is too much of the `times' and not enough of the `life'.

Gavin Keating has avoided this and many other pitfalls of biography to produce an excellent study of Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige as a military commander. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that this is the author's first book. Keating is an infantry officer in the Australian Army who has been deployed on operations in East Timor, Bougainville and the Middle East. This
book fills an important gap in Australian military history: Savige had been the subject of W.B. Russell's There Goes a Man published in 1959, but that uncritical work was more hagiography than biography.

Born in Victoria in 1890, Savige enlisted in the AIF in 1915 and was commissioned at Gallipoli. After serving on the Western Front, where he was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during the Second Battle of Bullecourt, Savige volunteered for service in Persia (now Iran) with Dunsterforce. This special unit, commanded by a British officer, Major General L.C. Dunsterville, was tasked with opposing the Germans and Turks, gathering intelligence on Bolshevik attempts to spread communist revolution to India, and increasing British influence in Persia. Dunsterforce found itself in a chaotic situation and was forced to withdraw. Savige was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for providing protection to Assyrian and Armenian refugees fleeing the Turkish Army. As Keating rightly comments: `Extreme distances, harsh terrain, poor infrastructure, the shifting loyalties of the local populations, language and cultural barriers, disease, famine and generally inadequate resources made military operations for Western forces in
the region prohibitively difficult, much as they continue to do today.'

With the outbreak of World War II, Savige was appointed to command the 17th Brigade. The brigade fought in Libya and in Greece, and Savige and the brigade headquarters directed a portion of the 7th Division during the Syrian campaign. In 1941, Savige returned to Australia to take control of the 3rd Division which he led during the Salamauacampaign. After this, Savige took command of New Guinea Force and finally II Corps, which he led until the end of the war in Bougainville. Thi s book t e l l s Savige's life story, but it also goes beyond this to make three important contributions to Australian military history. The first is Keating's study of the importance of patronage in the Australian Army in this period. Savige had become close friends with Blamey after World War I
when the two frequented the Naval and Military Club in Melbourne. In fact, Savige provided the alibi for Blamey when his police badge was found in a brothel during a police raid. Keating argues that Blamey's patronage played a vital role in Savige's World War II career, especially in his promotion to command New Guinea Force in 1944.

The second contribution is an analysis of Savige's role in the internecine struggle between militia and staff corps officers in this period. Savige held the militia prejudice against the staff corps, but, as Keating points out, this did not stop him taking their advice during operations. The third contribution is Keating's clear-eyed assessment of Savige as a military commander. Savige was an instinctive leader. His rapport with the men under his command and his sincere concern for their well-being - characteristics
seen during both his army career and his work with Legacy - meant he was able to create `the "atmosphere" required for effective command'. Savige was politically astute and was `the right man for the right job' during the Bougainville campaign. He understood the need to limit Australian casualties and put a brake on the actions of his overly aggressive junior commanders. However, Keating goes on to point out that Savige had a limited understanding of the technical issues involved in World War II combat. This made
Savige overly-reliant on his staff officers. Keating argues convincingly that Savige's relative failure at Bardia and relative success in his later campaigns can be linked directly to the level of advice he received from his staff officers in each of these operations.

Crossfire: An Australian Reconnaissance Unit In Vietnam
Highly recommended, there is an excellent chance that this book is the one for which you have been searching. Written by two Australian veterans of the war in Vietnam and standing as a tribute to all who served in that conflict, Crossfire is a unique look at the way in which a specialized Australian infantry platoon operated as a reconnaissance unit in the field. While the style of writing is at once both raw and gritty, it is nonetheless a book with a great deal of soul. It tells the story of how a bunch of blokes at the sharp end, fought (and in some cases, died) in what became Australia's longest and most divisive war. Like so many "Diggers" who went before them, they did their duty and more. They laughed together, felt pain and sometimes cried together, but throughout, maintained that very Australian characteristic in the face of adversity: a stoic determination to see the job done, no matter what.

Crossfire is much more than just another war story, however. It goes beyond the jungle-bashing and the contacts and the firefights; beyond the heat and the sweat and the sometimes gut-wrenching fear that were the essence of the grunt's war in Vietnam. The authors have adopted a mode of presentation that works extremely well and complements the theme of the main narrative. Interwoven with the exploits of the Reconnaissance Platoon as it sought to come to grips with its task in the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam, is a separate but complementary story focused on the present. It looks briefly at a small group of veterans, some thirty years after the event, as they seek a kind of cathartic release while camping and hiking in the Flinders Ranges, that area of rugged but serene, natural beauty in "outback" South Australia.

Based on incidents and events that actually occurred, Crossfire not only holds the interest all the way, but in many places reads like a best-selling novel. Indeed, it is one of those rare books, which once started, is entirely difficult to put down. This is a very worthy addition to the genre, and it is a credit to Peter Haran and Robert Kearney that they have captured so faithfully what it was to be in action on the ground in Vietnam. If you are a veteran of the Vietnam War, then in a very real sense the incidents and events portrayed in the book will have an uncanny knack of taking you back there. It will take you back to another time and another place - to a conflict and an era that you have known intimately, and which will forever feature in the history of the Australian soldier at war. If you are not a veteran and you read no other book on the subject, you must read this one. Excerpt: Harry 'Breaker' Harbord Morant (9 December 1864 27 February 1902) was an Australian drover, horseman, poet, soldier and convicted war criminal whose skill with horses earned him the nickname "The Breaker". The bulk of his published work appeared in The Bulletin magazine. During service in the Second Boer War, Morant participated in the summary execution of several Boer (Afrikaner) prisoners and a German missionary, Daniel Heese, who had been a witness to the shootings. His actions led to his controversial court-martial for murder; his death warrant was personally signed by the British commander in South Africa, Lord Kitchener, although Lord Kitchener subsequently denied the issuance of it. Morant was executed for murder by a contingent of Cameron Highlanders (a regiment of the British Army) in Pretoria gaol (South Africa) on 27 February 1902. In the century since his death, Morant has become a folk hero to some in Australia. His story has been the subject of several books, a stage play, and a major Australian feature film. Accounts of Morant's life before the Boer War vary considerably, and it appears that Morant fabricated a number of these romantic legends. Morant is often described as being 'well-educated' and claimed to be the illegitimate son of Admiral Sir George Digby Morant of the Royal Navy; a claim repeated as fact by later writers, although the Admiral denied it. The 5th Division was an infantry division of the Australian Army which served during the First and Second World Wars. The Division was formed in February 1916 as part of the expansion of the Australian Imperial Force infantry brigades. In addition to the existing 8th Brigade were added the new 14th and 15th Brigades, which had been raised from the battalions of the 1st and 2nd Brigades respectively. From Egypt the division was sent to France, where they served in the trenches along the Western Front. After the war ended and the AIF was demobilised, the 5th Division name was revived in 1921 and assigned to an Australian Citizens Military Forces (reserve) unit. During the Second World War the division was mobilised for the defence of North Queensland in 1942, when it was believed that the area was a prime site for an invasion by Japanese forces.
