Empowering!
If you're a firm believer in modern-day medicine and have no interest in taking care of your own body, then this book is not for you. But many people today are beginning to question the ability of their physicians to treat their whole body rather than just a set of symptoms, and they're looking for ways to take their health care into their own hands.

Rayna M. Gangi, a holistic healer with native American roots, begins this volume by providing considerable evidence that today's children are suffering much greater health risks than those of several decades ago, with the increase in vaccinations and behavior modification drugs. Chemicals in common household products and in the water they drink expose them to numerable toxins. And their diets are suffering due to soft drinks, sugary products and artificial sweeteners and colors.

She also explores the over-vaccination of pets and the poor quality of most pet foods. While the author doesn't mention the food poisoning which recently devastated many pet owners, that incident certainly does make one question what our pets are really eating.

As the circle implies, our journey begins with childhood, and this book wouldn't be complete unless it traveled the full arc into aging and death. The author touches on the concept of living life in circle, and living in harmony with the earth and its cycles. In a well-written and well-documented book, she shows us where we can make changes in our lives, so we can experience better health and happiness.

Rayna M. Gangi writes with warmth and compassion. She encourages us to ask questions, and to notice how our bodies feel when we bombard them with chemicals and mistreat them. Ultimately, she sees a world where we all respect our bodies, our environment, and each other.

Forget the Cures Find the Cause Full Circle
This is the best book I have read in a long while.This is exactly whats happening in our world today and people need to know this truth.I was thrilled to see that Ms Gangi could write such an eye opener aboutholistic health. Connecting the body, mind and spirit in a natural way to heal all three. I found the section about children was even relevant to me today in my later years.It has been such a exciting book packed full of knowledge and insight.This one goes to all my children and grandchildren for Christmas this year!

This is an outstanding book that should be required reading for all. Rayna has a deep knowledge that I for one truly appreciate. Anyone that is sick or does not feel all that well will greatly appreciate this book.

Author has anti-science bias
I would not believe anything he writes because of his anti-science bias.For example, in his adolescent psychiatry book he presents alot of patent falsehoods on ME (CFS) that likely serve to retard the science and cause a great deal of iatrogenic morbidity.

A wonderful resource for all
I spent the weekend reading "A Practical Guide To Autism: What every Parent, Family Member, and Teacher Needs to Know" and have already recommended it to two families.What a wonderful resource! I am also considering it as a requirement for my students in the ASD Masters Degree Program because of the depth and breadth of topics it contains.I will be speaking at a seminar for School Counselors and School Psychologists in the near future and will bring the book along to share with this group as well.This book is an outstanding contribution to family and professional autism resources.

Great resource for parents and professionals
Dr. Volkmar isn't as sexy as Jenny McCarthy, but he knows a heck of a lot more about autism.As a speech pathologist with 10 years working with autistic children and adolescents, and as a parent of a 4-year-old with autism, I recommend this book as an excellent resource for both parents and professionals.It is heavy on science and light on mumbo-jumbo, but it is not a difficult read.Definitely a must-have for anyone whose life is impacted by autism.

Not for the parent looking for real information
This book doesn't really contain information as much as it reads like a scolding mother who has become OCD about GFCF.I wouldn't recommend this book for someone who is looking for real information about the diet.The author is too concerned that gluten flour particles are going to land on her child, recommending sterilizing toys that are touched by non-gfcf hands and I found it, IMHO, to basically be a rant without many of her sentences to be supported by true information.I understand that naysayers of the diet have made people defensive but this books is one of the reasons why there are naysayers.Support your arguments with the information available... There are much better books that do this!

I Wish I had have read this sooner
This is a fantastic book.With 2 young children including a 6 yr old with Aspergers I find it difficult to really get into a books. I am happy to report that this is an easy read and provides a lot of practical information for parents.
I had started to change everyones diet prior to reading this book.I now have a better insight into the diet and also realise that small changes we have seen can be attributed to the diet.We will continue on this journey and look forward to implementing many of the fantastic ideas in this book.

A must for parents looking for natural, practical answers
My family just recently moved back from Costa Rica to Florida to live with family after realizing that our daughter Riley needed more resources for symptoms we were seeing(she was about 16 months when I think we first started noticing).
As an educator, I was familiar with autism and the behaviors present.I was a strict vegan when I was pregnant with Riley and maintained a nutrition based approach to both my personal health care and the health care of my family.
I began researching autism and links to nutrition and dietary issues and read this book.
I wish I had copies to hand out to the grandparents, other parents in my childs' playgroup, and health care providers within this field. I take my copy of the book with me when meeting with individuals who are involved in my childs recovery.I believe the info in the book to be one of the only sources of unbiased, nutrition based, and holistic centered sources out there. I highly reccommend this book to anyone frustrated with the current treatment program for their child and ready to start recovery.

Love the diet, not the book
We read both this book and The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook when embarking 3 months ago on our gluten-free, casein-free diet for our 3 year old daughter, diagnosed with autism.The effects of the diet were immediately apparently.While I was skeptical about its possible positive influence (b/c my dd didn't suffer from the frequent ear infections, bowel problems, or infections that others seem to have cured by the diet), the results were almost miraculous.Contrary to the withdrawal symptoms the author describes, my usually lethargic daughter actually became quite hyperactive for the first week or two.Then, it evened out and suddenly, she's having conversations (although she was always verbal, it was very scripted and was mostly manding, which was a vast improvement over the small vocabulary she had when diagnosed-->thanks to a year's worth of ABA therapy).She told her first joke.Within the same week or two, she quit using her pacifier at night and started sleeping soundly.Her occupational therapist told me 5 weeks in that my dd was a completely different girl.She was focused, on task (at least for that session for the first time) and cooperated throughout the hour long session.No, her autism wasn't cured yet, but the speech improvements, the longer attention spans, her improved social interest, shrunken pot belly, and improved physical coordination over just 3 months, has prompted me to explore biomedical treatments.

My criticisms of the book though is that I think it was incredibly overwhelming and scary for someone who was on the fence like me about embarking on the large burden of transforming their kitchen and cooking.She was almost extremist about her positions--suggesting that you buy entirely separate utensils and appliances.I simply can't afford to do that and implying that not finding success "because I didn't implement the diet fully or correctly or consistently" [paraphrased] hurts more than helps parents who are seeking answers.I would normally knock only one star off for this reason, but because I find so much value in the diet and its miraculous potential for ASD kids, I am further disappointed that the book makes it seem that the only people who pursue this diet are crackpots.I would highly recommend the The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook; it is much more accessible and even-handed.

Autism: Teaching Does Make a Difference by Brenda Scheuermann, Jo Webber
I needed the book for a Graduate class that I'm taking. Great Book; teaches all the basic terms and characteristics of autism spectrum disorder.

Best autism/ASD text I've used
I've taken four graduate level courses in autism education and have worked in the classroom and in support roles in special education for several years, so I've read a lot of autism-focused stuff. This is the best research-focused and easy to read resource I've found. The first chapter provides an overview of autism and autism spectrum disorders, and the second is focused on basic behavioral strategies. The third digs deeper into behavior, titled "Reducing Challenging Behavior." The fourth and fifth are focused on instruction, curriculum development (ch. 4) and teaching strategies (ch. 5). Chapter 6 is "Remediating Deficits in Speech and Language," with seven and eight focused on defecit remediation is socialization and life skills respectively. Finally, the best chapter of the book, Ch. 9, is titled "Understanding Intervention Controversies," and it provides guidance for evaluating interventions, reasons for program failure, and a story of one family's search for an effective program. It does a nice job of sorting through the mess and media surrounding autism without insulting parents or practitioners who have ascribed to strategies or mindsets that aren't research proven or that have been proven ineffective.

I also like that each chapter has a summary at the end with key points. And each chapter has its own list of references at the end, which makes it easy to do further research in just one area of the text (unlike other books that put all the references at the end). ... Read more

No good biomedical help here
So many ASD kids are sick with bowel disease and live in terrible pain. This book only covers the bare minimum of ASD issues and deals effectively only with ABA treatment. Sadly, it takes far more to recover many children than ABA. Ms. Siff-Exhorn's book oversimplifies the very complex causes and medical problems that all too often go untreated or are simply viewed as behavioral.

Okay if you're just finding out about autism
But most of the information found in this book is easily found on the internet. I was hoping this book would help us find school/treatment for our 2 year old austistic son, but it was much different that I expected. Most of the material that was written was information about autism that I was already very well aware of.
Disappointed. :o(

Excellent Sourcebook
This is an excellent book if you're looking for something like an Autism encyclopedia.This isn't really one of those books that gets into too much personal detail about experiences with Autism, it's more of a guidebook and a reference manual for parents or ABA therapists.It has a plethora of information from diagnosis to dietary intervention.It covers all the bases and leaves you with plenty of hope for your child.Definitely a worthy buy for parents, teachers, or anyone else interested in learning more about Autism and how to intervene.

A Good Start for Newly Diagnosed
I wish this book had been around five years ago when my son was diagnosed. This is a great start, but ONLY a start. I feel there needs to be much more on sensory integration. My son is also PDD and ABA did nothing for his flapping and spinning. Newly diagnosed parents must remember that Autism isn't curable but treatable. With therapies, diet, and a good special ed teacher their child can live in our world very well. My son is now eight and looks, acts, talks like a typical boy. Certain social still cause stimming and behavior problems but all in all he's doing excellent. Again, this book is a great start.

Don't bother -- Save your money
Save your money ... this book is misleading, nothing new, and for anyone to claim that they have written a book that is "everything you need to know" about helping your child with Autism is, in itself, ludicrous.

Apparently "everything you need to know" is just using ABA therapy.

The Author, Karen Siff Exhorn, claims that her child is "completely recovered from Autism" (his actual diagnosis was PDD) but then the author also says that her son still needs a 1:1 ABA therapist to "support him" on playdates.The child is in 4th grade.That is hardly what I would consider to be "recovered".
What this author appears to consider "recovered" is her son's ability to speak, to be compliant, and to not "look autistic" ... meaning, she focused on ABA "training" to get her kid to not flap or shriek and to "look normal". "Looking normal" was the most important thing to her, it seems. So her kid sounds as if he can appear normal,which is great, but her son still doesn't know how to relate to kids, converse with them, or play ...

Half a page on Sensory Integration and a quarter of a page on Integrated Play Therapy can hardly be considered "everything you need to know".

We all have 1000 times more computing power at our fingertips right now than NASA used to get a man on the moon ... yet few of us make very good use of it.

It would be great if there were one book that would tell us everything we needed to know, but since every case of Autism is different, that is not possible.Forget this book and just search the web.

Autism
I bought this for a friend that works with autisist children.

She works with them daily at school and she was greatful for the inside information. Plus, she as able to incorporate the coping techniques into her daily job.

Too little information about biomedical treatment
I bought this book based on the rave reviews only to get it and be sorely disappointed. I will donate it to the library. It is a lot of info about working with the school, the doctor, family, friends, etc. but very little about really healing a kid from the inside. Mine are 19 and 15 and I need good ideas on what other biomedical treatments to use--we have used many and have come far but I am always still combing literature looking for more information.

This book is clearly not the one for me. Too introductory in the biomedical area for my needs.

A wonderful resource
I stumbled on to this book when trying to understand what a friends of a recently diagnosed autistic child were going through. It helped me tremendously...and, it has helped them too as they start this difficult journey. This is a valuable contribution and tool.

A good place to begin
This book is an excellent place to begin learning about Autism for any parent of a newly diagnosed child. It is also an excellent resource for teachers, family memebers or anyone else whose life will be touched because of Autism.

This book was a great help to me as the mother of a two year old who is possibly autistic...waiting for our appointment at Kennedy Krieger...not only did it deal with facts and info but it also tackled the tough issues of how we feel as parents of a developmentally delayed child....everyday is a struggle and she lets us know that we are human too.

Informative But a Little BitToo Technical
I was too overwhelmed by a lot of technical jargons to catch the depth of what it was all about. Maybe this book is suitable for specialists rather than people with developmental disabilities. The author explained Autistic Spectrum Disorders in various aspects of our daily lives such as nutrition, physical therapies, and some diseases caused by symptoms of the disabilities, and etc. I agree she tried to specify each of ASD according to the readers' questions and her writing style is pretty comprehensible to me. However, if possible, I would have liked her to give us readers several solutions to cope with each disorder. Amazing!
Honest, thoughful, and informative. Excellent information for parents, educators, and professionals. I wish all educators would take the time to read this book and think about how they treat their students "on the spectrum".

Book.....Ants and all....LOL
We ordered this book and knew it would be good but the package came with a surprise, over 200 of them.When we opened the package, a queen ant and over 200 drones poured out of the package all over our kitchen.The queen must of got in the package at the point of origin and the drones followed her.What a mess cleaning that up, my wife took pictures and texted them to me at work, I thought she was nuts.The book just had some ant guts on the outside but overall was not damaged.Just didn't expect to get a "bonus" with the book....LOL

Temple Granden -unique woman "The Way I See It"
I saw the movie on Temple Granden and rushed to buy one of her books. I hoped for some practical information with which to deal with my grandchild. Although the book was riviting, it was not the one for this purpose. In fact, it's main theme was that each person with Asperger's Syndrome is unique and must be treated as such.

Recomendation
I absolutely loved this book! It has a very real and personal perspective on Autism so that everyone could relate to what Ms. Grandin went through. She has great suggestions for how to deal with some issues and she provides something I haven't seen in other books on Autism. She provides hope; a reasurance that we can make it through the tough times and that things will be better. I loved this book and I'm sure you will also. It was the best purchase I've bought this year.

Great ideas and motivator for parents!
As a parent of a child with Asperger's I love this book!In the first 50 pages it had given new ideas and great motivation in how I work with my child.I have never met Temple but I have met Eustacia Cutler (her mom) several times and their story is so inspirational considering the timeframe when Temple was growing up.I would also recommend reading Eustacia's book Thorn in My Pocket: Temple Grandin's Mother Tells the Family Story also. ... Must have book!
This is a must have book for anyone considering a specialized ASD diet. Julie goes into great detail about which diet does what, and how to go about choosing the one that is best for your chld, along with other treatments and health concerns...all pertaining to ASD.Lots of great infomation within one source.

Great book must have for a seeking mom
I have this great book and would highly recommend it to any seeking mom of a spectrum child.I reference it constantly.The information is well documented, easy to follow and understand.If you are willing to do the work to figure out the best diet for your child, you will see great results!!

Nourshing Hope
This book was very detailed and had a wealth of information.At times it seemed more aimed to the professional, I am new into this area.I loved the cook book and video and have tried several recipes.The idea to sneak food in by a broth was really good and it works.While it requires time to process it is easy.Worth the money I spent.

A key resource book for children's health and nutrition
I'm a nutritionist and I recommend this book to all my clients and families with ASD. It does an excellent job of summarizing all the best nutritional therapies involved in improving and healing autism. Her information is RIGHT ON. She has pulled together the best info from all sources, and she supports all her chapters with with scientific explanation which helps assure the reader that she's not just teaching theory. Nourishing Hope is an excellent compilation of Julie's success strategies with easy to implement instructions. And her recipe suggestions for picky eaters are a hit!

I have been doing biomed for years with my son.I am now a consultant and I frequently recommend Julie's book.When I discovered my child's autism I set to work researching everything I could find.I read the well known books of the time and well, they are difficult and overwhelming.Julie's book is so complete and user friendly.It is written in language that makes understanding the complex issues our children are dealing with obtainable.I wish Nourishing Hope had been available when I first started learning about Biomed.It is so clear and to the point.Everything you need to move forward is contained in this book.I have shelves full of Autism books but there are two books in my arsenal that are seldom shelved.Nourishing Hope by Julie Matthews and Amalgam Illness by Andrew Hall Cutler are all you need to recover your child from autism. ...
