Product Description
Crew Resource Management (CRM) training was first introduced in the late 1970s as a means to combating an increased number of accidents in which poor teamwork in the cockpit was a significant contributing factor. Since then, CRM training has expanded beyond the cockpit, for example, to cabin crews, maintenance crews, health care teams, nuclear power teams, and offshore oil teams. Not only has CRM expanded across communities, it has also drawn from a host of theories from multiple disciplines and evolved through a number of generations.Furthermore, a host of methodologies and tools have been developed that have allowed the community to better study and measure its effect on team performance and ultimately safety. Lacking, however, is a forum in which researchers and practitioners alike can turn to in order to understand where CRM has come from and where it is going. This volume, part of the "Critical Essays on Human Factors in Aviation" series, proposes to do just that by providing a selection of readings which depicts the past, present, and future of CRM research and training. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't take your passengers with you.
This book is a good wake-up call to the dangers pilots put there passengers, and those on the ground, in by thinking they can do it all by themselves. It has the usual war stories of "There is was upside down at 20,000 feet..." but integrates a good overview of CRM into the discission and lets you see for yourself how effective CRM could have prevented all the accidents, incidents, and felony stupids sighted.

A quick read about three hours and has a good index (what can I say, a text book without a good index is worthless).I gave the book four stars because some of the chapters are written by guest authors resulting in some lack of consistency. Also a bibliography would have been nice.

I have also thumbed through some of the other books in this series. The series appears to be a must read for any one in the aviation community who is serious about flight safety. ... Read more

Carbon Trading in Aviation: Birth of a New Market

Summary

The European Union has made waves in the carbon trading industry by including the aviation sector under emissions trading. This is accompanied by carbon emission efforts on part of airlines and airports in the Western world. Many airports and airlines are coming to the forefront of the climate change battle. A large number of airlines and airports in the US and Europe now offers carbon offset programs and several other schemes to minimize carbon footprints. Most European and American airports and airlines are proactively investing and working on fuel-efficiency, waste management, water conservation, green buildings, recycling, hybrid vehicles, solar energy installations, cogeneration plants etc. In fact, Manchester airport is one of the 66 organizations that have received Carbon Trust Standard, a certification for having genuinely reduced carbon emissions and also being committed to curb emissions in the future. Many airlines in the Western world have serious emission targets which they plan to achieve its goal by investing in alternative fuels, cleaner aircrafts, smart routings and also by carbon trading. The entire aviation sector has come a long way in awareness about the need to limit their carbon footprints, as is evident from their carbon schemes. Nevertheless, what spurs them into action is the financial benefit that comes as a result of energy efficiency. This marks the beginning of a large market for carbon trading in aviation.

Biofuels for Commercial Aviation: A New Market Set To Rise

Summary

The aviation industry is now looking into curbing its carbon footprint by the use of alternative fuels. Second generation biofuels, generally produced from non-food-crop-based feedstock are expected to assist the industry in battling climate change and ensuring long-term availability of affordable fuel. Biofuels for commercial aviation are being tested by a variety of airlines across the world, to ensure their safety and performance requirements. The certification process for the use of biofuels in civil aviation is currently in progress. Biofuels are therefore expected to be used in civil aviation by 2010-2013. Biofuels are looked upon to enter into the global jet fuel market exceeding $250 billion in 2008. However, the industry is struggling with insufficient feedstock supply, high feedstock prices, lack of distribution facilities and risk-averse nature of end-users, to top it all. In this backdrop, the potential market for biofuels in commercial aviation is expected to become viable in a decade’s time.

Product Description
Airports have always had to comply with certain environmental regulations arising out of their operations, as local governments require impact studies on new construction projects and soundproofing nearby homes. Landings and takeoffs, as well as the diesel shuttles that circle the terminal roads, leave thousands of tons of toxic emissions in a compact area of the city. And for years, many airports have been slow to adopt measures that go beyond the minimum requirements.

U.S. airlines emitted about 418 billion pounds of carbon dioxide in 2007, according to the Air Transport Association, the airline industry trade group.

Airports have been spending hundreds of millions in terminal facilities that are esthetically pleasing but are not configured to conserve energy. Because of the perilous situation in airlines, airports call for quick return on investment funds. Occasionally the return on investment on these (environmental) projects is not adequate enough for the airport.

However, similar to many other industries, airports are fast adopting the green zeitgeist,
led partly by better social consciousness and ameliorating engineering science, and made
more pressing by ascending fuel costs.

This report covers the various concepts employed by airports in today's age to go ""green."" The report takes a look at this new trend through case studies. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This report has two focuses; carbon offsets and business reputations. The initial analysis is designed to understand the attitudes the public has towards carbon offsets, and how carbon offset schemes could build better public support. The analysis considers which demographic segments of the population are more, or less, supportive of carbon offsetting. There is detailed analysis of attitudes towards carbon offsetting according to our climate change segmentation interlinked with flying behaviour - since a most common consumer touch-point with voluntary carbon offsets is when buying flights. Additionally, recognition of 15 carbon offset organizations is measured.

The final portion focuses on business reputations. In sectors such as the oil, car, coal, airline and supermarket sectors, companies and pressure groups are currently vying for public support over climate change. This research measures public approval and disapproval for specific companies - and what proportion of the public do not care to mention any company.

Questions addressed

  • What proportion of the population believe that carbon offsetting is a worthwhile endeavour?
  • How disillusioned are people with its effectiveness?
  • Do flyers have different opinions to non-flyers over carbon offsetting?
  • How do opinions differ between Climate Citizens, Mild Greens, and Sceptics & Uninvolved? What is the demographic profile of those who are more likely to think highly of carbon offsetting?
  • How much do people recognise various carbon offset companies?
  • Do airlines and supermarkets have a more negative reputation in England than Canada or the USA?
  • Given the development of the tar sands, are Canadians concerned about the oil companies?
  • Do coal companies have a negative reputation in America?
Quote:
…. There is virtually no spontaneous disapproval of coal companies, or the coal industry, for their stance/action on climate change ….
