Product Description
There are portions in Afghanistan major road network some of which are links to neighboring countries that are only partly constructed and generally unpaved; secondary national roads and provincial roads are either gravel or earthen; tertiary roads that give access to and from villages are in varying states of neglect and generally unpaved. More than two decades of conflict, combined with a prolonged lack of maintenance, have resulted in damage to long sections of roads, critical structures, bridges, and the snow galleries approaching the Salang Tunnel. The 2.8 kilometer tunnel has some localized damage and lacks ventilation and lighting. Overall, Afghanistan's road network has been rendered only partially usable and, even then, at a significantly high transportation cost. This is a snapshot report of the country's transport sector from March to May 2002, with a special focus on roads and civil aviation. ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides the wider aeronautical community with an insight into the historical development of aerodynamics. There were a number of key developments in the subject by German and Russian scientists and engineers, such as Prandtl, Kutta and Zhukovskii at the beginning of the 20th century. All aerodynamics has been based on papers by these people but these fundamental papers are not available in English, indeed some of them have never before been translated. This text presents these papers, in English translation, together with an accompanying commentary putting them into the context of their period and showing their relevance to modern aerodynamics. Aimed at academics and professional engineers, this book re-establishes the basis of the science of aerodynamics. The key features include: fundamental material presented in English for the first time; important historical developments put in context; and strong relevance to modern aerodynamics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Before the Aircraft Carrier
This is a very good book that covers a period of seaborne aviation often over looked.
What would have made this a great book is if it had gone to the next step and covered the seaplane carriers & seaplane tenders (flying boats too!) that preceeded, competed with and then fell behind the aircraft carrier.
The last gasp of the seaplanes via the SeaMaster project into the 1960's is little known and even less understood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SpeedReaders.info Review
This is not a glitzy guided-walk-around-the-plane coffee table sort of book. Beginning with a summary of the competition between Boeing (X-32) and Lockheed Martin (X-35), this book covers all facets of the program history (technical, schedule, financial, contractual, political) up to the time of publication, 2007. The first flight was in December 2006 after demonstrators first flew in 2000. Much has happened since 2007 and despite the rising costs, delays, and political and technical problems that slowed down the program it now appears to be on track once more.

While the F-35 project is international in concept it would not be wrong to say that Keijsper emphasizes British aspects of the program. The book is as much a tour de force as the technology behind the subject it covers. Well and lucidly written it will still leave the casual reader rather severely taxed by the vastness of the detail. On that score, consider that the book contains ten pages of abbreviations! And while there are eight appendices, they are mostly no more than a page long and list such things as test protocols, people, contractors, production records, ground and flight test schedules, and specs with three-plan views. (Outsiders don't normally see what's shown in appendix 7, a list of all the other aircraft that were used as test beds in the JSF program, something called Technology Risk Reduction.) Considering the amount of detail we know the book to contain, the index seems unexpectedly low-key. The photo captions are quite extensive and list sources. And while there are many illustrations they are, inevitable given the book's format, on the small side. Another thing that's rather small is the type size; old beady eyes be warned.

Product Description
In WALKING IN SPACE: DEVELOPMENT OF SPACE WALKING TECHNIQUES, David Shayler provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of EVA techniques, for the first time outside NASA publications. The author draws on original documentation, personal interviews of astronauts with experience of EVAs, and accounts by those involved in suit design, EVA planning, and operations. Moving on from the pioneering of EVA techniques during the Gemini program, the author describes the basic requirements in terms of the equipment that every spacewalker needs, the development of training techniques - currently all completed on Earth - the surface explorations of the Moon by the Apollo astronauts and the numerous activities performed by Shuttle astronauts and those aboard the Salyut and Mir Space Stations, such as satellite servicing, equipment upgrading and repair missions. He also describes the development of techniques for ensuring crew safety during EVAs and looks ahead to future EVAs from the International Space Station and the development of new technology, including robotic assistance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, organized, informative
In 1938, the French and British sold out their Czech Allies at the Munich conference, allowing Germany to occupy Czechoslovakia. When the Germans marched in, they not only took over a country, but a huge amount of weapons such as the T-35 and T-38 tanks. This infusion of modern armor helped Germany defeat France and led to the infamous Marder and Hetzer Anti tank weapons.

There are many other tidbits of information in the book. As with many of the Schiffer Military books, this is published on high glossy paper, well illustrated with crisp B&W photos, line drawings and data pages. Czech armament industry was very advanced for its time in tanks, armored cars, machine guns, armored trains and more. This book covers it all.

This is an excellent addition to the serious armor buff/historian. Not so much for modelers, not enough color. It is expensive, but well worth the price. It really gives an excellent idea as to contemporary armor design in Europe between the wars, what the Germans did to advance those designs and until 1948, how some of those designs were still in service. Higly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reference
