Excerpt: Fort Scott National Historic Site -In 1842 Fort Scott, named after Winfield Scott, was established on the American frontier on the military road between Fort Leavenworth and Fort Gibson. It was established due to the rapid immigration of settlers from the Eastern United States out west. Fort Scott became one of a chain of forts intended to protect the new settlers from the Indians, and protect the Indians from the settlers. The United States government hopes of permanent Indian lands west of the Missouri River proved for naught, as settlers continued to encroach on the Indian settlements. Fort Scott's most active days were between 1842 and 1853. The Cherokees of Oklahoma were upset with the presence of Fort Wayne in their proximity. After some delay, it was decided that the soldiers of Fort Wayne would abandon that fort and instead build a new fort between Fort Leavenworth and where Fort Wayne stood. It was hoped it would placate the Cherokee and provide some defense against the rampaging Osages for white settlers and other Indians. On April 1, 1842, some soldiers of Fort Wayne left their fort and on April 22 arrived where Fort Scott would be built, in the Osage Cuestas section of modern-day Kansas. After haggling with the Cherokees to acquire the land, the rest of Fort Wayne's garrison left the fort on May 26 and arrived at the Fort Scott site on May 30. Unlike most forts for military use, the fort did not have defensive walls or structures when first built; the wide-open area and the available artill...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1026683 ... Excerpt:The Battle of Svensksund (Finnish: Ruotsinsalmi; Russian: Rochensalm) was a naval engagement fought in the Gulf of Finland outside the present day city of Kotka on 910 July 1790. The Swedish naval forces dealt the Russian fleet a devastating defeat that resulted in an end to the Russo-Swedish War of 178890. Circumstances in the 1780s, including the war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, and the moving of a portion of the Russian Baltic Fleet to the Black Sea, prompted the Swedish King, Gustavus III to attack the Russian Empire in 1788. It was also started to distract domestic attention up for domestic political problems and for the king to be able to fulfil his role as the king and hero. His main aim was to recapture some of the territory in Finland which had been lost to the Russians in the 1740s. In 1788, he began a maritime campaign in the Gulf of Finland, intended to exploit the relative weakness of the Russians. From here, he planned to attack Kronstadt and St Petersburg. However, the Swedish army was crippled by political factions, and, as a result, Gustavus was forced to rely heavily on his navy including his new inshore defence fleet based at the sea fortress of Sveaborg. The war was supposed to be won by a surprise assault on St Petersburg, conducted by the Swedish Royal Navy and the Army's navy; (Skärgårdsflottan). The latter was a superb brown-water force, designed for coastal amphibious warfare in the Baltics and the elite of the Swedish armed force in the late 18th century. However, after the Battle of Hogland (1788) (a tactical tie but a strategic failure fo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=732124 ... Read more

The museum can be found on Quarry Street, a road running just off the High Street. Part of the Museum is housed in the gatehouse of Guildford Castle. The Museums collection originally grew from the collections of the Surrey Archaeological Society, which was founded in 1852. From the outset the society collected objects from excavations and private donations, as well as accepting loans from private individuals. These artefacts were first stored with the societies various Honorary Secretaries in a number of locations in London. In 1871 it was suggested that the Societies collections be moved to a more permanent base in Croydon (then Surrey, now a part of London) and housed in the Croydon Library and Scientific Institute. Part of the attraction of the move was that the institute offered free accommodation for the collection, provided glass cases for display and offered to produce a catalogue of the collection. This was modestly described as very advantages by the Societies committee. However the Croydon institute failed to live up to its promise to provide adequate care for the collections, and when the Honorary Secretary, Mr. Mill Stephenson, visited the collecti...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5365225 ... Excerpt: INS Vikrant (R11) (Hindi: ) (formerly HMS Hercules (R49)) was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. Her keel was laid down on 12 November 1943 by Vickers-Armstrong on the Tyne and she was launched on 22 September 1945. Completion work was carried out in Belfast but construction was suspended after the end of World War II and she was laid up for possible future use. Her pennant was changed from R49 to R11. In January 1957 she was sold to India, and construction was completed at Harland and Wolff with an extensively modernized design, including an angled deck with steam catapults, a modified island, and many other improvements. The Vikrant, as seen from HMS Centaur - March 1962 Hawker Sea Hawk The Alize Anti-Submarine AircraftThe Indian high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vijayalakshmi Pandit, commissioned her as INS Vikrant on 4 March 1961 while she was still at Belfast, Northern Ireland. The name Vikrant was taken from Sanskrit vikrnta meaning "stepped beyond", i.e. "courageous", "victorious". Her pennant was once again R11 in the Indian Navy. Captain Pritam Singh was the first commanding officer of the carrier. She formally joined the Indian fleet at Bombay on 3 November 1961, when she was received at Ballard Pier by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other high-ranking dignitaries. The Vikrant's initial air wing consisted of British Hawker Sea Hawk fighter-bombers and a French Alize anti-submarine aircraft. On 18 May 1961 the first jet landed on board, piloted by Lieutenant (later Admiral) R H Tahiliani. In 1965, Pakistan claimed that it had sunk the Vikrant. Excerpt: The National museum (Czech: ) is a Czech museum institution intended to systematically establish, prepare and publicly exhibit natural scientific and historical collections. It was founded 1818 in Prague by Kapar Maria ternberg. Historian Frantiek Palacký was also strongly involved. At present the National Museum houses almost 14 million items from the area of natural history, history, arts, music and librarianship, located in tens of buildings. The founding of the National Museum should be seen in the context of the times, where after the French Revolution, royal and private collections of art, science, and culture were being made available to the public. The beginnings of the museum can be seen as far back as 1796, when the private Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts was founded by Count Casper Sternberk-Manderschied and a group of other prominent nobles. The avowed purpose of the society was the renewed promotion of art and taste, and during the time of Joseph II, it would be adamantly opposed to the King. In 1800 the group founded the Academy of Fine Arts, which would train students in progressive forms of art and history. Another night shot of the museum, taken from the centre of Wenceslas Square. The National Museum in Prague was founded on April 15, 1818, ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2574869 ... Read more

Excerpt: Sánchez Adobe Park -The park site has a long and rich history. The Sánchez Adobe at the park is considered the finest example of Spanish era architecture in San Mateo County. Archaeological and historical evidence identify four main periods of history, followed by the purchase of the site by the County of San Mateo in 1947. Prior to 1786, the Ramaytush division of the Ohlone people occupied the site, with the village Pruristac. Evidence of this village, in the form of a shell midden, can be seen near the park ranger's building. The Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola camped nearby, one mile to the west, from October 31, through November 3rd, 1769. Journals from his expedition give no indication that he visited the village, though there is record of meetings with the villagers. The very first Indian baptised at the Mission San Francisco de Asís on June 24, 1777 was 20-year-old Chamis of Chutchui, from the village Chutchui, whose mother lived at Pruristac. In 1782 and 1783, many or most of the people from Pruristac including village captain Mossués and village leader Liquiique with their wives and daughters were baptised and joined the Mission in San Francisco. Two men of this group from Pruristac, with baptismal names Hilarion and George, served as leaders of Mission San Francisco and were alcades of the Mission at the time of their deaths on February 7, 1807 as part of a Mission posse during a skirmish with the Suisunes tribe. In 1776 the Spanish established a Mission and Presidio at nearby San Francisco, and baptismal records identify many Ohlone people from Pruristac emigrated to Mission Dolores. In 1786, the Mission established ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7127970 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Prague Aviation Museum, Kbely (Letecké Muzeum Kbely) is a major Aviation Museum located at Prague's original airport at Kbely, 8 km (5 miles) north-east of the town centre near Route 10 (E.14). Kbely was the first Czechoslovak military airfield and during the inter-war period was the venue for several major public air shows. The first scheduled flight operated by CSA Czechoslovak Airlines (now CSA Czech Airlines) departed from Kbely for Bratislava in October 1923. Kbely airfield is not now used as a front line Czech Republic Air Force base, but it is utilised by based military test units. During the mid 1960s, the Prague Military Museum commenced a programme to recover, restore and preserve historic aircraft from around the country for eventual display at Kbely. Initially, one hangar was used and around fifty aircraft were placed on public display. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Canada Aviation and Space Museum (French: ) is the national aviation history museum, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, at the Ottawa/Rockcliffe Airport. The museum was formerly known as the Canada Aviation Museum but in late April 2010 the parent Canada Science and Technology Museum Corporation announced that the museum would be expanded and that its name would be changed to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in May 2010. The Canadian Press expressed concern that the name change would cause confusion with the existing Toronto-based Canadian Air and Space Museum. The Canadian Aviation Museum was formed in 1964 at RCAF Station Rockcliffe as the National Aeronautical Collection from the amalgamation of three separate existing collections. These included the National Aviation Museum at Uplands, which concentrated on early aviation and bush flying; the Canadian War Museum collection, which concentrated on military aircraft, and which included many war trophies, some dating back to World War One, and the RCAF Museum which focused on those aircraft operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1982 the collection was renamed the National Aviation Museum and in 1988 the collection was moved to a new experimental type triangular hangar from the Second World War-era wooden hangars it had been residing in. In 2006 an additional hangar was opened, which allows all of the collections aircraft to be stored indoors. The museum closed 2 September 2008 for remodeling and rearrangement of the aircraft on disp...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=761389 ... Read more

Excerpt: Fort Morgan (Alabama) -After the departure of the Spanish from Mobile in April 1813, the Americans built an earth and wood redoubt on Mobile Point, ultimately naming it Fort Bowyer after Col. John Bowyer, who completed the construction before leaving in 1814. In September 1814 the fort withstood a British naval and land attack, known as the First Battle of Fort Bowyer. The British returned in February 1815 after their defeat at the Battle of New Orleans and again launched an attack that became known as the Second Battle of Fort Bowyer. This time they were successful, with its American garrison surrendering the fort. Before the British could continue their attack towards Mobile they received word that the Treaty of Ghent, ending the war, had been signed on Christmas Eve, 1814. When word of the treaty's ratification arrived shortly thereafter, the British withdrew. The site was a logical one for a more substantial fort that could defend itself from landward and protect the entrance to the bay, leading to Fort Morgan replacing Fort Bowyer. After the War of 1812, the U.S. embarked on a program to strengthen its seacoast defenses. As part of this program, in 1818 the U.S. contracted with Benjamin Hopkins of Vermont to build a large masonry fort on Mobile Point after a design by Simon Bernard, who had been a military engineer for Napoleon. However, Hopkins died a year later in a yellow fever epidemic, having accomplished little. The next contractor, Samuel Hawkins of New York, died in 1821, before accomplishing anything on the project...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1936401 ... Read more

Excerpt: Polish Aviation Museum (Polish: ) is a large museum of old aircraft and aircraft engines in Kraków, Poland. It is located at the site of the no-longer functional Kraków-Rakowice-Czyyny Airport. This airfield, established by Austria-Hungary in 1912, is one of the oldest in the world. The museum opened in 1964, after the airfield closed in 1963. The collection as of 2005 consists of over 200 aircraft, including sailplanes and some 100 aircraft engines. Several of the aircraft displayed are unique on the world scale. Some of the exhibits are only in their initial stages. The museum houses a large aviation library and photographic archives. The museum has 22 extremely rare airplanes that once were part of the personal collection of Hermann Göring, which before World War II were displayed in Deutsche Luftfahrtsammlung museum in Berlin. These planes were evacuated during the war to rescue them from Allied bombing (the museum was destroyed in air raids) and were found abandoned on Polish territory after the war ended. From time to time museums in Germany have unofficially expressed interest in having some of these planes returned, especially those that are of great significance to German aviation history. As of 2009 there is no sign that this will happen in the foreseeable future. Excerpt: Turkish State Cemetery (Turkish: ) is a national and military cemetery in Ankara, Turkey, containing the graves of the presidents of Turkey and the high-ranked, close companions-in-arms of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, in the Turkish War of Independence. The cemetery was established upon an act dated November 10, 1981. It is situated around the "Karadeniz Havuzu" (Black Sea Pool) on the grounds of the historical "Atatürk Orman Çiftlii" (Atatürk Forest Ranch) in Ankara. The architect Özgür Ecevit and the agronomist Ekrem Gürenli, who won the contest organized by the Ministry of National Defense in 1982, designed the state cemetery. It was opened on August 30, 1988 with a state funeral ceremony for the transferred bodies of two presidents, Cemal Gürsel and Cevdet Sunay, and of 61 commanders of the War of Independence. At the opening ceremony were present, President Kenan Evren, Prime Minister Turgut Özal, and leaders of the political parties represented in the parliament, Erdal İnönü (SHP) and Süleyman Demirel (DYP), and members of the President's Council. The cemetery is administrated by the Ministry of National Defense. It is memorial park with an area of 536,000 m² open to the public, of which 180,000 m² is planned and the remaining is green area. The Black Sea Pool, built in 1931 by the order of Atatürk, was restored during the establishment of the state cemetery. The surrounding area of the pool serves today as a recreational park. A road within the cemetery flanked by marble sculptures, called "Cumhuriyet Tarihi Yolu" (History of the Republic Road), is dedicated to the milestones in the era of the rebirth of the nation. This collection of artworks features the first-ever large-scale sculpt... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7891801 ... Read more
