Product Description
The primary purpose of Aviation Weather and Weather Services is to provide you with an up-to-date compilation of all the FAA's weather publications in one easy-to-read and easy-to-understand reference book. This book is largely a reformation of the FAA's Aviation Weather (AC 00-6A, published 1975) and Aviation Weather Services (AC 00-45E, published December 1999), but other ACs (advisory circulars) are covered as well. Gleim provides 100% coverage of all the material in the FAA's Aviation Weather and Aviation Weather Services. They have presented this information in an outline/illustration format, which completely explains and illustrates all of the concepts from the FAA's books. The book uses the same figures (including color), charts, and graphs to help you learn and better understand aviation weather. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Very General Study of Weather Hazards
I had high hopes for this book when I bought it. The book promised large gains in my aviation weather knowledge. I actually felt a little underwhelmed to be honest. This is, in essence, an introductory level aviation weather textbook.

I am a current airline pilot flying MD-80's, and think that as a General Aviation weather resource, this book is OK. It would be particularly useful for someone studying for their Instrument rating or initial Commercial certificate. For jet transport operations, though, this book is only marginally useful.

This book does contain good information, but understand that it is not very detailed information (I read the entire book in two hours in a hotel room), and is marginally useful to experienced turbine pilots. The book is partly redeemed by numerous case studies, that show the relevance of the materiel. The case studies are very interesting, but lack depth. For better case studies I recommend the NASA ASRS monthly reports (blue sheets) that are mailed free to interested people. For better real world weather flying, stick with Richard Collins for GA or "Fly The Wing" by Jim Webb for turbine flying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference guide
I borrowed this book from our local library and I like it so much I am ordering it. I am adding books to my library of meteorology, one at a time. Not being a meteorologist, there are of course upper limits on what I can understand or wish to learn. Fluid dynamics with differential equations is one of them.
This book is written for pilots. i am not a pilot but enjoy the mechanics of flying-approaches, frequencies, navigating, planes, airport administration, etc. Weather is important to pilots and Lankford devotes 8 chapters to it. See, what I have discovered is, every author explains a subject in a different way. Lankford's explanations of fronts, air masses, clouds, bring a new perspective for me. His three chapters-3-on satellite images and interpretation are unique and are alone worth the price of the book. He has some appendix chapters, but they are of little interest to me.

So, I highly recommend this book to pilots and weather "enthusiasts", because it gets hard to find information that is approachable
and not graduate level tombs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok... nothing special
This book needs color pictures. The whole premise is to help pilots learn how to decipher sat. and radar images, but you can't tell much about the example pictures due to their quality and their lack of color. However, pilots really need to know this stuff, so something is better than nothing. Buy the used version - not worth "full price." ... Read more
