Previously published as one volume, this book is now one of two under the general name Digital Avionics Handbook (2nd Edition). The two volumes are Avionics: Elements, Software and Functions and Avionics: Development and Implementation.

This book offers a comprehensive view of avionics from understanding the basic technology and components that make up the overall system. It includes examples of modern systems flying on the latest military and civil aircraft. There are 23 chapters in Elements, Software, and Functions, 13 chapters in Development and Implementation. They are written by experts in their individual areas. The authors come from industry and government, from both the United States and other countries. The subjects range from the 'lowly' battery to the latest in fly-by-wire technology.

With so many subjects to be covered, this book is basically an introduction to the various fields. It is, nowever, an introduction aimed at the engineer who has been assigned to or may in the future have to work in this area.

This book purports to cover avionic systems, Installation, and troubleshooting.The "systems" section does a good job of covering the systems it does cover, communications and some navigation systems, and that's about all it does do.It does not cover anything related to the fuel, power, airdata, flight control or other systems of an aircraft that are also part of the "avionic" systems.It is obvious that the author has never worked as an avionics technician and views the "systems" of an aircraft from the point of view of a small aircraft pilot.The Installation section was severely lacking and the one-page "troubleshooting" section was a complete waste of paper as it contained none of the methodolgy used to isolate system problems in today's complex corporate and commercial aircraft.The book should be renamed to more accurately portray what it actually covers; "Comm/Nav systems." The current title is misleading and I was very disappointed with this book, considering its purchase price.

This is a great primer if you are a student of or have general interest in airplane avionics.I throughly enjoyed learning about the technologies behind DME, VOR, Comms, GPS, etc.The many, many typos throughout the book lead me to believe this is a self-published book and the author didn't want to pay for a copy editor.If you can get beyond the errors (primarily gramatical), this is well worth a read. ... The book is useful as a summary and reminder of what RTCA DO-178 and RTCA DO-254 require.This book will certainly not replace those documents, but it does help to interpret and summarize them.The one thing this book is missing is an index.If you're searching for a particular topic or concept, you have to look at the table of contents, and then guess at the location of your interest.An index isn't too much too ask and would have made this book so much more useful.

Fantastic book - just what I needed.I'm an embedded engineer but new to avionics certification and DO-254. I had DO-178B experience somewhat but never understood the rationale behind it.The authors obviously are experts and I already knew about 1/3 to 1/2 of the information in here, so I could validate what they said. The real value was in the other 50-60% which I did not know. Many useful examples are provided. I wish it was more detailed but then it would be 1000 pages and I probably wouldn't have read it.I can't imagine doing an avionics project without some type of reference book and this is the best summary I've ever seen or heard of - it's quite popular at the major avionics company I work for and we refer to it or just reference it.I did find it funny that 3-4 of the reviews on this site for this book are horrible while the other ten are wonderful.No middle ground.Interestingly the horrible reviews are all by people who don't include their last name while the real people provide their last name and honest comments. Having been to FAA meetings I can say there are some sour apples out there so obviously these are the types of folks always criticizing instead of offering real value (or real reviews) - probably just competitors to the authors that are jealous because they couldn't have written such a great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs an editor to clean it up and organize it better
Let me start by saying that if I thought I knew more than the authors did, I wouldn't have bought the book. I'm quite sure that the authors know DO-178B and DO-254 inside and out. What I question is their ability to convey that information to me, the reader. We've all had at least one college professor who was a genius in his/her field, but couldn't teach worth a crap. That's how I felt while reading this book.

The book feels more like a set of Powerpoint slides with some presenter notes printed after each one. The organization of the material isn't particularly great, and it feels like a surface-level treatment of most topics, when I was expecting an in-depth exploration.

As an aside, the typography is terrible, and distracts the reader from trying to follow the text. One particularly egregious example is the last paragraph on page 112. At the end of the first sentence, in the middle of the word "requirements" the font size drops by a few points. Later in the paragraph, the first letter of the word "Be" is in boldface.

There are other glaring errors; on p. 140, the authors say that the FDA only classifies medical devices as class 1 or class 2, and there is little difference between the two levels.

A tongue depressor is a class 1 medical device, while an X-ray machine is a class 2 medical device. It sounds like there ought to be substantial difference between the two levels (and if fact, there is). On a previous project, I worked on a defibrillator, which is a class 3 medical device. But according to this book, class 3 doesn't exist as a classification. (It does; see [...])

This book could benefit from an editor to substantially clean it up, fact-check it, and provide better organization.

For $[...], I expected better.

Firstly, this is a highly recommended book for Engineers or Engineering students who wishes to understand more about the modern aircraft systems. This book is relatively easy to read as it is more qualitative rather than more quantitative like most engineering textbooks which every pages are filled with endless equations.

Secondly, most aircraft systems textbooks are either written for pilots or mechanics who wishes to take the FAA A&P examinations. This book however is written from an Engineer's perspective. Almost every chapters of this book gives a comparison between the system architecture of different aircraft types from the various manufactures, for example Boeing vs Airbus. As an Engineer working for one of the largest MRO company dealing with both Boeing and Airbus aircraft, this proves to be a very useful insight for engineers as it allows one to understand the different approach adopted by the different manufactures.

Lastly, at the current price you invested on this book, it is a relatively good bargain as compared to attending Aircraft Type courses offered by Alteon or LTT since it only cost a fraction of one Aircraft type courses. Although not as in-depth as those courses offered by the EASA 147 training organization, this book is sufficient enough to provide one with a head-start in understanding Aircraft Systems

I bought this book to help train our younger engineers in aircraft systems. Although our company's various groups specialize in hydraulics, fuel and electrical/lighting systems, I needed a good reference for the other systems that closely interface with ours. This book fits that role perfectly.

The training went very well and the book was indeed well received. In fact, one of our senior engineers hijacked the book and read it cover to cover over a weekend, and I almost had to pry it out of his hands to continue the training the following week.

The topics that are very well treated include flight controls, especially the more electric controls such as the EHA and IAP. The fuel system and software development are also very well treated, but in fact all the topics are very comprehensive.

Most aircraft systems books seem to be geared toward pilots and mechanics and therefore do not deal with issues at a level that is useful for design and integration into new aircraft This book does that very well. The authors obviously know their subject thoroughly and I am grateful that they took the time and effort to create this book to share their knowledge with others.

I am not sure how they've done it but there is just so much in this book to help you get to grips with aircraft systems. There are helpful diagrams and photos on every page and some pretty complex technology is explained really well. Each chapter has a good introduction and takes you through the topics until you hardly know how you've learnt so much.

If you're in the aero industry or training to be in it, this book is worth buying. You'll be looking at it everyday. At the back there is some handy contact information too. ... Read more

I was a bit misled by the title 'avionics troubleshooting and repair'.Really there isn't that much about repair in the book.It is OK as a guide to a pilot working with an avionics shop, but really not a lot of help for someone actually trying to repair avionics.For example the author wanders off pontificating about electrostatic discharge for over 7 pages, starting with Thales of Millet describing static electricity in 600 BC.Loran and ADF's get coverage in the book adding to the waste.Meanwhile COM equipment gets 10 pages total.The authors spends a lot of words trying to describe 'F-style contacts' which would have been better served by a small sketch.

For an aircraft owner or pilot this is a good basic tool to troubleshoot the most common problems while recognizing the symptoms.It also presents the accepted methods and techiniques of installation to avoid such problems.For the established professional avionics technician or aviation mechanic the book could go further.Therefore I rated the item four stars from the perspective as a pilot, owner.

A better title for this book would be "Avionics systems for Pilots" or "An overview of aircraft radio systems". I am An Airframe and Powerplant mechanic and I had hoped that this book would assist me in troubleshooting Avionics problems but instead it only gives brief but detailed descriptions of the radios and how they operate. I would have loved a more in depth troubleshooting chart at each chapter and perhaps some more instalation and repair tips. I would recommend this book because there is nothing else out there that even comes close.. but I wish there was a second edition "Advanced Avionics Troubleshooting and repair" ... Read more

This book provides an excellant source of information for the 'principles of operation' of modern avionics systems.Its the first of such texts that I have seen that takes the mystery out of the 'glass' environment.I highly recommend it for pilots trying to gain a better understanding of what is really going on behind the Cathode Ray Tubes and Flight Management Systems.I know of few other texts that provide such well organized information in such a concise collection of subject chapters.

I was disappointed with this book almost immediately.Having paid $ for this text, I was expecting to see some high quality work.the first thing I noticed was that instead of being a well considered text that takes the reader logically from one topic to the next (as you might expect from a "Handbook"), its really just a collection of scientific papers written by various authors in the aerospace community over time and then bound together by the "author".Second, the graphics are not only not in color, they are often low resolution.

My advice: keep shopping.

This book offers a clear and concise explanation of the modern avionics suite. The best part of all is that one does not really need a background to understand the material that is presented. The book does an outstanding job of cultivating the necessary basics and then builds on it. This text can either be read cover to cover, or as a reference and reviewed as needed. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this subject. Several of my colleagues intend to purchase this book for their own use.

I think this book it's a "must have" for anyone interested in avionics. It would be interesting if in future editions the autor writes more about mathematical analysis regarding avionics equations. Nevertheless, this book is an excellent source of information. If you are looking for something in avionics, and your professional background is an advanced techniciann or engineer, this is a very good choice.

This book is a much needed avionics reference book and text.It is an excellent overview of emerging and traditional avionics systems.The book starts with a short history of avionics development and then goes on to explain all avionics systems found in modern aircraft.Dr. Helfrick does an excellent job of explaining how various systems function and their role in the aircraft and air traffic control system.The book is written with the avionics technician or engineer in mind but would be very helpful to pilots who want a more in depth knowledge of the systems in the aircraft they fly.The book addresses future as well as all current systems and is a must for anyone interested or working in the field of avionics. ... I used the first edition in some research and the university library years ago.The second edition is even more comprehensive.I'm glad to add this to my own library.

This book covers many important navigation systems including GPS.However, I felt like there were some details missing in the first few chapters.Simple things that I was not aware of prior to this book, such as heading 90 degrees due west, were not easy for me to understand.I had never been exposed to this type of lingo.Hence, I would not recommend this book for an undergraduate course.

This book contians all the information that anyone could ever need.It also has the best index I have ever seen, making finding the smallest section easy. It does not really cover the basics of each system, but provided you have a basic knowledge then it will build on that.It is up to the reader to decide how much depth they want to go into, this book will take them as far as they could possibly need to go.

This book was obviously intended for the experienced navigator or system designer.It certainly reviews all of the traditional and modern navigation systems.However, in trying to explain every minute detail, the basic workings of the technology are never explained.

The average readerwill have a very difficult time in just trying to understand how a GPS orVOR or DME system works.A search on the web will present much betterexplanations.

This is, by far, not a quick read, it is burdened byvolumes of mathematics that are of little practical use, and the chapters,written by different authors, are often disjoint.

Simple, keyexplanations are mentioned (if at all) after pages of technical confusion. It is as if the author could spend several pages explaining to the averagedesert nomad how to build a snowman in every minute detail -- how to growthe carrot for the nose, how to pick out the best black rocks for the eyes,how to make the body round to "n" degrees of precision -- but heforgets to mention (until page 89) that, oh by the way, you need to havecold weather and snow to make one.

It's a moderate book to get in touch with avionics sub system. I think is easy to understand if we have telecommunication / electronics / aviation background.

This book is good for beginner on avionics system.Nevertheless this book is not suitable for deep analysis and lack of information about air data computer, gyro, and black boxes (FDR & CVR).

The book showed different gauges but did not fully explain how to read them or how they worked, and why they are needed. This would be a very poor learning tool because it showed alot of things but did not fully explainanything. I could not recommend this book to anyone who did not alreadyhave a working knowledge of avionics.

As an Avionics tech in the Marine Corps and a flight school student, I found this reference book helpful in identifying the electronics and their functions on board aircraft.

If I'm not mistaken you can just download this reference at the FAA website. Something I was unaware of until after I bought this book.

It's cheap, (only $14 I think) so it's up to you to decide whether you want to pay for a paperback or download for free the handbook. ... Read more

The official editorial review of this book is correct.It has chapters on the major elements of modern avionics.If you don't know that an aviation communication radio has 760 channels and uses AM modulation, then this may be the book for you.If you want specifics on anything, look elsewhere.

In the 15 minutes before I decided these volumes were going to be returned, I came to the conclusion that it contains absolutely no information about research, design, or implementation of any of the systems it covers.The feeling I get is that the articles are written by marketing managers that are being very careful to use perfect grammar while not discussing any technical details.An avionics sales brochure has more info that these books.

Not worth a tenth of the price.There may be poorer CRC Handbooks, but not any I've ever seen.The publisher should be embarrassed to sell this drivel.

Avionics is the cornerstone of modern aircraft. More and more, vital functions on both military and civil aircraft involve electronic devices. After the cost of the airframe and the engines, avionics is the most expensive item on the aircraft, but well worth every cent of the price.
Many technologies emerged in the last decade that will be utilized in the new millennium. After proof of soundness in design through ground application, advanced microprocessors are finding their way onto aircraft to provide new capabilities that were unheard of a decade ago. The Global Positioning System has enabled satellite-based precise navigation and landing, and communication satellites are now capable of supporting aviation services. Thus, the aviation world is changing to satellite-based communications, navigation, and surveillance for air traffic management. Both the aircraft operator and the air traffic services provider are realizing significant benefits.
Familiar technologies in this book include data buses, one type of which has been in use for over 20 years, head mounted displays, and fly-by-wire flight controls. New bus and display concepts are emerging that may displace these veteran devices. An example is a retinal scanning display.
Other emerging technologies include speech interaction with the aircraft and synthetic vision.
