The Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB) is the executive arm of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); it simultaneously serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization. In 1949, the Pan American Sanitary Organization and the World Health Organization agreed that the Pan American Sanitary Bureau would serve as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Americas. In 1950, the Pan American Sanitary Organization was recognized as a fully autonomous and specialized inter-American organization. Thus, the Organization became a component of both the United Nations and the inter-American systems. The XV Pan American Sanitary Conference (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1958) changed the name of the Pan American Sanitary Organization to the Pan American Health Organization. The name of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau remained unchanged. The fundamental purposes of the Pan American Health Organization are to promote and coordinate the efforts of the countries of the Region of the Americas to combat disease, lengthen life, and promote the physical and mental health of their people.

Hotels in Mt Airy North Carolina The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History Mount Airy, North Carolina is a small town. A town immortalized in the Andy Griffith Show as Mayberry. Andy Griffith was born and raised in Mount Airy. The town immortalizes Mayberry with much memorabilia and celebrations. Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? Although the emphasis is on Andy Griffith, Mount Airy is much more than another Mayberry. From the eyes of a child of the '60s My mother was raised in Mount Airy. When I was a kid, we visited every summer for a week of boredom. From the eyes of a child of the 60s, the town was insignificant. Residents spent their free time sitting in a rocking chair on the porch; perhaps whittling wood or watching the occasional car go down the road. Forty years have passed since I was that child and I wish I had the time to whittle or watch the occasional car go down the road. Location Recently I returned to Mount Airy, to examine the past through a different perspective.

The peaceful Lucayans lived primarily off the sea, fishing and harvesting shellfish, conch, lobster and mollusks. What little remains of their culture is limited to pottery shards, petroglyphs and words such as 'canoe,' 'cannibal,' 'hammock,' 'hurricane' and 'tobacco.' Christopher Columbus planted the Spanish flag on San Salvador upon his first landfall in the Americas in 1492. Three years later, Spanish colonialists established the first settlement in the archipelago, serving as a terminus for Lucayan Indians enslaved by the Spaniards for shipment to Hispaniola. Within 25 years, the entire Lucayan population of 50,000 was gone, and the Spanish eventually abandoned the settlement. In 1513 the Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon sailed through the archipelago searching for the fabled Fountain of Youth. Instead he ran into the fast-moving Gulf Stream, which whisked him to Florida and his 'discovery' of North America. Soon Spanish galleons were passing by the reef-encrusted Bahamas laden with treasure, from the empires of Central and South America, bound for Spain. Many foundered, and the waters of the archipelago were littered with wrecks. Tales of treasure lured pirates, and they used the Bahamian islands as hideaways and bases. For the most part, the islands remained unsettled and unclaimed until over a century later, when King Charles I of England granted them to his attorney general.

Extractions: November 1, 2001 Good morning. It is a pleasure to participate in the Stanley Foundations policy forum on the impact of September 11 th on the third border and security concerns. Had this conference been held 2 months ago, my remarks may have been somewhat different, but the tragedies of September 11 now permeate everything that we do. As Secretary Powell said, We are in this worldwide campaign together for the long haul. We have endured an enormous tragedy but we will overcome. We will defend the rule of law against the lawless. We will not allow murderers to destroy our democracies and devastate our economies. We will never let our future be hijacked by terrorists. After September 11 th , the response of the Caribbean, and the entire hemisphere, was immediate, strong, and supportive. Prime Minister Ingraham of the Bahamas summed up the feelings of many at a Caribbean Community and Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM) meeting, Contrary to the pronouncements of the missionaries of death who promote such barbaric acts among their young while themselves ensconced, without risk, in safe havens, terrorism will bring them neither victory nor glory; rather, indelibly, they will forever be known and remembered as purveyors of death, destruction, and evil.
