The fall of the Serbian Empire1371-1389 The Settlement of Serbs on Balkans and the First State The territory of the Balkan peninsula, which the Serbs - a Slavic tribe - were to settle and in it create their states, was inhabited from time immemorial. Scientists believe that today's Western and Central European countries were inhabited already in the first period of the Pleistocene (Diluvial, Ice Age), and the man appeared in the Balkans in the period of the last glaciation (Alp glaciation - Wuerm) During those cold climates, 40.000 years ago, perpetual ice descended on 1.500 meters above sea-level. The first communities at the time inhabited caves. Research on these caves, in particular the one under the Jerinini hill in the villages of Gradac and Risovace on Vencac, allows us to recreate their lifestyle. The communities had 10-15 members each, from one to three biological families, who lived chiefly off hunting and fruit gathering. The man, already a Homo sapiens, shaped stone and bones into implements and weapons. He first hunted large herbivores (huge deer, wild horses, and cattle), but when climatic conditions changed (when the prearctic climate prevailed) he hunted mammoths, rhinoceroses, lions and hyenas. Owing to an extremely cold spell, (glaciation Wuerm 3) around 25.000 years B.C., caves were abandoned and human life ceased. The first chapter in the history in human life in communities on the territory of Serbia is thus closed.

The feature article this quarter is the Greek-Bulgarian campaign during the Second Balkan War 1913. A prelude to the First World War this short campaign was fought for control of what is today the Greek regions of Macedonia and Western Thrace. It was also an opportunity to use the 15mm Balkan Wars figures produced by Spiros Koumoussis that we reviewed last quarter.

For the full feature, complete with links and maps, go to: http://historymedren.about.com/library/weekly/aa041999.htm by Melissa Snell They were called the Illyrians, a multi-tribe race of peoples who settled in the Balkan Peninsula centuries before succumbing to Roman conquest. As part of the Empire, Illyrians occupied the province of Illyricum, where art, culture, and philosophy flourished, and where they retained their ethnic identity while at the same time rising to positions of prominence, even that of Emperor. When the Empire was divided in 395 AD, the Illyrians came under the jurisdiction of the Eastern portion (the Byzantine Empire); yet their religious affiliation was with the Church of Rome. They continued to distinguish themselves in government, achieving once again the highest seat of power: the emperors Anastasius I, Justin I, and Justinian I were all Illyrians. During the early years of Byzantine rule, the one-time province of Illyricum suffered raids from Huns, Ostrogoths, and Visigoths. In the sixth century, invasions by the Slavs began, and much of the area was assimilated by the invaders, which included Bohemians, Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs. However, the southern Illyrians managed to hold onto their racial identity and their language.
