In some areas, notably the North, coral and sandstone cliffs rise straight out of the sea reaching several hundred feet in height. In the South West, cliffs of 50 to 100 feet rise and fall along the coast, separated by small sandy beaches and bays. On the flatter South West and West coasts, you may walk for miles along unbroken white sand beaches, sometimes stopping at a cluster of coral rocks jutting out to sea. All along the shore large and small beaches are broken by coral formations, the soft coral rocks weathered by the ocean surf, forming abstract sculptures to an artist's eye. Barbados is a coral island and its beaches are made from finely ground coral forming a clean fine grain. There are few beaches that are not fine sand. Generally if there is a beach on the shore, it is beautiful sand. Natural sand dunes are not common but some exist in Long Bay on the South West Coast. Other Coastal Features Of course, not all of Barbados' coast is sand; there are mangrove swamps, cliffs, tide pools and areas where beds of low lying coral rock, sandstone, clay or shale reach out to the sea. Barbados' swamps are to be found in Chancery Lane, Inch Marlow and Graham Hall in the South and South West of the Island. They are the major wetlands of Barbados providing an assemblage of plants and animals forming an important link in the food chain of offshore fish and birds.

It is 21 miles (34 km) long, 14 miles (23 km) wide at its widest part and has a total area of 166 square miles (431 square km). At a longitude of 59.3 o west, Barbados is in the -5.00 Greenwich Mean Time zone. Barbados is divided into 11 parishes: St. Lucy, St. Peter, St. Andrew, St. James, St. Thomas, St. Joseph, St. Michael, St. George, Christ Church and St. Philip. All of these with the exception of St. George and St. Thomas are bordered by the sea. Barbados is generally flat along the coast with an increase in height as one moves inland. Mount Hillaby, the highest point on the island, is 1104 feet (336 m) above sea level and is located in the parish of St. Andrew. Barbados' population of 260000 is blessed with a tropical climate. The average temperature of 26.1 o C (79 o F) is maintained by over 3000 hours of sunshine each year and the north-east trade winds which vary between 6 mph (10 km/h) and 9 mph (15 km/h) all year round. The lowest temperatures occur between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. during late December and January. (The lowest temperature ever recorded in Barbados was 18 o C). Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was abolished. The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance. Contact Us The original island inhabitants were peaceful Arawak Indians who were later subdued by the warlike Caribs who gave the island many place names including Hewannora meaning "where the Iguana is found." Although there is tradition that Columbus discovered the island on one of his new world voyages, the best evidence suggests that he did not. St. Lucia is located in the Southeastern Caribbean approximately 1,300 miles from Florida. It is part of the Windward Islands which in turn are part of the lesser Antilles which are part of the West Indies. This 238 square mile island is presently populated by about 150,000 people. The island is volcanic in origin. The majestic Pitons are visual evidence of this as are the sulfur springs. Soufrière, the city at the base of the Pitons, means sulfur. Beaches in the southwest, mountainous part of the island (such as Anse Chastanet) are black sand owing to the presence of lava rock. The rain forest is also located here in the mountainous region. The jungle foliage is lush and colorful. The northern part of the island is hilly rather than mountainous, and the beaches are more typically white sand. The colorful flowering foliage is still present, however. Our favorite spots tend to be on the north end of the island and along the Caribbean coast down to the Pitons. Pigeon island and the long beach that is on the causeway connecting the island to the mainland is one of our favorite spots. The hilltop on the island contains the remnants of Admiral Rodney's fort, and the long beach will be very private. The causeway road is just past Gros Islet the home of the Friday jumpup. This has become an institution with many of the villagers becoming street side vendors selling barbecued meats, rum punch, and other drinks. Reggae music will blare from a huge speaker system set up in the middle of the village. There will be dancing in the streets. The party really just gets going about midnight and will continue till dawn.

In many of the remote areas of the island there are no such things as road names or signposts! Bajans will give you directions such as "go above the church and then below the white walled house" Technically "above" means go North and "below" South - but don't bet on it! The island isn't large enough for you to really get lost though so don't panic. Any road leads to Bridgetown ………eventually!! You will be given a map if you book a car or can pick them up at most stores and hotels for free. Part of the fun is exploring and seeing areas of the island that are off the beaten track. But if you actually need to get somewhere at a certain time then ask before you leave.
