The purpose of this site is to present these alternatives to students and teachers, and evaluate them on various criteria. This site has also been developed to allow the audience to take part in the search for the "best" energy source. A forum has been put into place so that students can give their opinions. Also there has been an interactive quiz designed to encourage the learning of these alternatives. "Bad Acid", a cartoon character, has been added to the site to provide interactive and entertaining tours of the web site and its content. These tours equal twenty minutes of animated learning.

Extractions: Biomass energy is estimated to contribute 7.1 percent of Mississippi's total energy consumption - that amount is double the national average. A survey of biomass energy combustion facilities identified 87 wood fuel consumers, one municipal waste-to-energy facility (Pascagoula-steam) and one rice hull combustion facility in Mississippi. The majority of the wood facilities burn wood waste to generate steam for industrial processes. There are eleven wood-fired cogeneration facilities. The energy demand of these facilities have created a large wood fuel supplier industry, made up of at least 96 firms. Other commercial biomass industries which contribute to Mississippi's economy are residential firewood combustion, municipal solid waste combustion, food processing waste combustion, and ethanol fuels. Biomass offers special opportunities for benefiting the local economy by keeping energy dollars in the state and by providing jobs in rural areas, where biomass feedstocks are produced. By using their wastes for energy, disposal costs are avoided, and industries are better able to compete. Biodiesel fuel requires no engine modification for use in conventional diesel engines. As development proceeds, new industries are created to serve local demands for new biomass products and equipment.

Capital cost is also an issue, as are transportation costs.

The use of renewable energy is contributing to our energy supply. With more use of biomass at lower production costs and better technology, the United States could generate as much as four-and-a-half times more biopower by 2020. It is estimated that biomass will have the largest increase among renewable energy sources, rising by 80 percent and reaching 65.7 billion kWh in 2020. Geothermal energy Hydroelectric (hydropower) energy employs the force of falling water to drive turbine-generators to produce electricity. Hydropower produces more electricity than any other alternative energy sources. It has been estimated that hydroelectric power will decline from 389 billion kWh in the U.S. in 1999 to 298 billion kWh in 2020. This decline is expected because most of the best sites for hydropower have already been developed and because of concerns about the adverse impact that large-scale hydroelectric facilities may have on the environment.
