5-0 out of 5 stars Snakes are awesome!
This is one of three awesome herp books that photographer John Netherton and writer David Badger collaborated on.It's such a pity that Mr. Netherton passed away when they were working on their third book, the lizards volume, since they probably would have produced equally great books on newts and salamanders and turtles and tortoises, the other two major herp groups they hadn't done yet. This particular book is loaded with beautiful photos of snakes, and lots of great information on them. There's information on, to name just a few subjects, snake photography, the importance of snake conservation (many people might have an irrational fear of them, but they have to admit that snakes do humanity a very valuable service through natural pest control), our relationship with snakes throughout history, families and species, snakes in literature, reproduction, vision, skin, hibernation, locomotion, and thermoregulation. There's also a wonderful two-page spread in the middle of the book, giving common and scientific names for a whole lot of different snakes.

Snakes featured in the photographs include the North American rough green snake (one of my new favorite species of snake after reading about how fascinated the specimen was by Mr. Badger's rotating screen saver), pigmy rattlesnake, tiger rattlesnake, king cobra, Western green mamba, two-striped forest pit viper, eyelash viper, monocled cobra, mud snake, kingsnake, milk snake, corn snake, ring-necked snake, Columbian rainbow boa, and Burmese python. There are so many amazing snakes I learnt about through this book, both venomous and non-venomous, dangerous and docile. There were also some surprises, such as the story behind the docile king cobra, whom the zookeeper described as very sweet, not the image at all that most people have of such a snake. This book should be recommended not only to people who already love herps, but also to people who are open to learning more about the wonderful world of snakes. These fascinating creatures deserve our respect, admiration, and protection, instead of being feared, hated, and killed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snakes, snakes, snakes!
I thought this book was excellent for the most part. The photos were AWESOME, and really makes a person realize the true beauty of snakes. The snake profiles and fun facts were supurb, and I personally learned a lot. This book is an excellent read for those who want to learn more about the wonderful serpents of the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Rescue Mystery
Catherine M.The book centers around Animal Ark hospital. The main characters are an elementary school girl and boy. They find a baby badger without a mother and raise him in the basement of the Animal Ark hospital. Together they solve the mystery of who is killing the badgers in their wild habitat.

I recommend this book to someone who likes mysteries and cares about wild animals. It is a good book for both boys and girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Mandy and James rescue a baby badger when they find it has been separated from it's mother. They then find out that there are a group of people in Welford hunting badgers. Mandy and James have to catch the badger hunters before they set the baby badger free into the wild or he could get hurt.

This is one of the best Animal Ark books and a must read for all animal lovers.

Mandy's parents and theirfriends try to find the people that are chasing badgers out of Pipers Woodand Darley Wood. Will they find them?

5-0 out of 5 stars Badger in the Basement
Badger in the Basement is a great book. I've read all 9 of the Animal Ark books, and all of the Animal Ark Pets books, but Badger in the Basement was my favorite. In this book, Mandy and James find a badger nest, butwhen they go back to the nest to check on the badgers, the nest has beendeliberately destroyed. All that is left is an orphaned badger cub.James and Mandy have to find out who did it. I think that people shouldread this book, because it's a great book, and a great series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have used a better editor
I picked up a copy of this book from my local library today, hoping to plan a summer vacation using the information therein. It's going to be a tough read if the rest of the book is filled with as many spelling and grammar errors as I found on the first few pages!Hopefully, the actual content of the book will be useful enough to overshadow this.If Mr. Rajer releases a second edition, I hope he finds a new editor.

5 stars for content, 3 stars for comprehension.

Book Description
The Eastern corridor of the United States may be notorious for overdevelopment, but Curtis J. Badger offers a challenge in his The Wild Coast: Exploring the Natural Attractions of the Mid-Atlantic: get off the highway and go see what the mid-Atlantic states have to offer. A companion to both Virginia's Wild Side and A Naturalist's Guide to the Virginia Coast, this new volume takes the reader on more than two dozen frequently surprising excursions through five mid-Atlantic states, offering detailed adventures for travelers wishing to explore the undeveloped territory of the East Coast.

With excursions ranging from sea kayaking at Roanoke Island, North Carolina, to a visit to the hawk observatory at Cape May, New Jersey, Badger's guide promises not only factual information on birds, butterflies, holly forests, and native plants but also an entertaining narrative that captures the excitement of exploring new territory. This guidebook to both wildlife and botany will appeal to anyone journeying along the eastern seaboard, particularly those interested in trading in their offices and armchairs for a taste of the unexpected and the wild. ...
