2-0 out of 5 stars Some utility, but poorly edited
While this volume is lengthier and contains more information than "A Basic Baha'i Dictionary" (1989), it is less adequate in terms of ease of use. Preparation of a historical dictionary of the Bahá'í Faith is a daunting task. Librarians, researchers and publishers have significant knowledge of the optimal organization of such works, and ways to improve their usefulness. The prefatory remarks and appendices in this volume help to set a standard for what to include in future such dictionaries. This dictionary has the potential to be useful as a quick reference for basic historical events, people, and concepts. Scarecrow Press's incomplete editing of this work is immediately apparent, resulting in readers' frustration as they attempt to find the information they are seeking.Notable problems are machine alphabetizing which takes into account diacriticals, thus widely separating articles that should follow one another letter for letter, e.g GHUSN comes after GUNG; lack of criteria for inclusion and exclusion of topics; biographies often lacking in significant enough factual information; erroneous cross-references; double entries under different forms of an individual Iranian name; misspellings of names; and several factual errors. While this may be useful for the amount of content in comparison with other dictionaries, some readers may wish to supplement this with Oneworld's "Concise Encyclopedia of the Baha'i Faith", due in October 1998, and "A Short Encyclopedia of the Baha'i Faith" from the Baha'i Encyclopedia Project (projected date unknown at this time). ... Book Description
As the title indicates, Divine Journey: Exploring the Baha'i Faith, takes one on a guided tour of the Baha'i Faith and its teachings. While not intended to proselytize (Baha'is are strictly forbidden to do so) it seeks to gently share with those who are interested in learning about the Baha'i Faith what it means to be a Baha'i and to live a Baha'i life via an exploration of some of the central teachings of that religion on love, peace, world unity, the purpose of life, life after death, and race unity and the elimination of prejudice. The book explores the implications and applications of the teachings of the Baha'i Faith and how they relate to the individual on a personal level and to society and the world on a global level, while examining the reciprocal relationship between them.Permeating the book is the cardinal teaching of the Baha'i Faith, that being the essential oneness of humanity and our spiritual transformation as lovers of the diversity that beautifies our human family. It is the ultimate aim of the book to illustrate that, to be true, this spiritual transformation must manifest itself in loving fellowship and service to humanity. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A SINCERE FAITH EXPLAINED
This slim volume divides into two equal parts. The first half covers some of the author's life experience and makes extensive reference to the recentfounder of the Baha'i faith. I think it is fair to say that this section ismore impressionistic than informative. However, the second half (from thechapter `God and the purpose of human life') gets down to business, anddelivers a systematic account of the teaching and practice of the faith. Some interesting line drawings, muddy in texture, show the mosque-like formof their temples.

Much use is made of borrowed terms, such as theChristian term `progressive revelation' - but here the usage is turnedabout face. It is made to mean that all ways lead to God, and therefore allreligious teachers are equally messengers from God. This results in`Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Mohammed', and so on, all beingcast in the same mould and tradition. But as their religious differencesclearly outweigh their similarities (except in the respective moral codesperhaps), this requires at least some explanation, which is notforthcoming. There are also many adopted parallels to parts of the Islamicfaith, such as the annual fast, equivalent to Ramadan.

The practicalresolution of all this is found in the Baha'i message of `consultation anduniversal participation', and `service to mankind'. Many laudablehumanistic, social progress statements are made. The aim is to appeal toall mankind in some way, to the widest possible audience of faith andnon-faith, to work for earthly progress, peace and prosperity. The overallmessage is one of an "over-faith", aimed at syncretism and ecumenicism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally amazing book
Totally amazing book. What Abdul-Baha accomplished in informal answers at the dinner table took some Bible Scholars years of research to reach the same insights, while Islamic scholars are still groping in the dark.Excellent variety of subjects. A major Baha'i legacy to the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars religious mysteries solved
Some Answered Questions is a compilation of the talks of Abdu'l-Baha (son of Baha'u'llah, Founder of the Baha'i Faith).Abdu'l-Baha gave both logical and traditional proofs to establish the existence of God and the necessity of Divine Educators such as Abraham, Moses, Christ, Muhammad, the Báb and Baha'u'llah, each being a successive link in the chain of God's unfolding plan for the education of mankind. He presents in a freshly illuminating way the Baha'i point of view on a number of perplexing Christian subjects such as the meaning of the "return" or second coming of Christ, the Resurrection, and the miracles of Christ.

There are innumerable subjects covered in this revealing compilation.Perplexing passages from both the Old and New Testaments are explained, the power and influence of the Prophets of God and their connection with the emergence of civilisations is expounded upon.Man's relationship to God, the immortality of the spirit, the existence of the rational soul after the death of the body - these and almost any questions which the human mind has reflected and pondered upon, are answered in a way which the mind can grasp and meditate upon.

Some Answered Questions is a treasurehouse of knowledge to the student of religion and to the person who questions what life is all about. It is an important part of Baha'i sacred literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Insight, regardless of your Religion
I've been interested in the Baha'i faith for a long time, and this book takes the cake as one of my favorite Baha'i books. It is essentially Abdul Baha explaining to a student of his certain key questions, from the importance of nature, to connections to Christianity. He even mentions workers rights, and many topics relating to the early 20th century. This book as a religious text seems slightly odd, because most of the concepts aren't to foreign and can directly be applied to a person living an Euro-American lifestyle. All this, and I'm not even an actual Baha'i.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful to Those Seeking a New View of Spiritual Reality
Some Answered Questions by Abdu'l Baha is a master work of questions put to Abdu'l Baha, son of Baha'u'llah, founder of the Baha'i Faith. Abdu'l Baha was the successor of his Father's faith and the authorized exponent of his teachings. These questions were put to him by one of his French followers. They are a lively array of topics: Biblical prophecy, comparative religion and scripture, social issues, Baha'i perspective on traditonal Christian topics, spiritual psychology, man's development, etc. This incredible array of topics is so amazing that few will find it hard to believe that Abdu'l Baha was a prisoner of the Ottoman Empire most of his life, suffering alongside his father, Baha'u'llah.Abdu'l Baha was eventually freed during the Turkish revolution, allowing Abdu'l Baha to speak in Western countries, including the United States and Europe. These questions and answers are bound to stimulate your thinking and enlighten you as many spritual mysteries are made clear to you. I strongly recommend this book to all seekers after deep spiritual reality, students of comparative religion and scripture, Biblical students, and students of the Baha'i Faith. It is wonderful book which will get you thinking and provoke you about spiritual subjects for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book-Must Read

1-0 out of 5 stars And the point is?
Mr. Miller wants the reader to believe his book is a scholarly and unbiased perspective on the Baha'i Faith, but his purpose is to attack it.His facts are many times not exactly accurate and his opinions are vengeful. It is not a useful book for anyone who wants an objective view of the Baha'i Faith.

1-0 out of 5 stars What the Baha'i Faith isn't.
At least that is what this book should have been titled.Rather than gather his information from sources both close and distant from the Baha'i faith's founder, Baha'u'llah, Mr. Miller elects to use only information he collected from the family of an estranged and angry brother of Baha'u'llah.A better book to read if you are really interested in what the Baha'i Faith is would be God Passes By written by Shoghi Effendi or The Revelation of Baha'u'llah by Adib Taherzadeh. ...
