Product Description
West Bengal and Bangladesh — nowhere else on earth is so much poverty concentrated and nature so demanding. To the Mouths of the Ganges deals with the ecology and culture of the lower Ganges delta, home to 150 million people whose land is traversed by thousands of miles of rivers and canals; where rivers change course and devour whole villages overnight; where floods submerge millions of acres of cropland at a time; where cyclones create mayhem on a grand scale; and where the human impact of global warming is so visible.

Frederic Thomas describes how crop irrigation and flood control have degraded the natural environment; how commercial shrimp production has destroyed wetlands and livelihoods; how landless peasants settle on shifting islands of sediment only to be washed away in hours; how swelling populations have pushed ever deeper into the mangrove forests to face man-eating tigers, crocodiles, and venomous snakes; how peasants contend with landlords whose callousness is truly unbelievable.

Despite this, the overall picture is not entirely bleak. Bengalis are extraordinarily resilient and ingenious in adapting to the environment. They love their land and its broad rivers, its culture and its age-old traditions. Hindus and Muslims live side-by-side, sharing shrines and respecting each other’s beliefs and customs, although religious offenses can unleash violent fanaticism and atrocities.

The author cites historical materials and updates the vivid accounts of early travelers while his observations reveal the practical futility of many of man’s efforts to manage river systems and wetlands. Traveling the region by bus, boat, and rickshaw, Dr. Thomas’ impressions and anecdotes add an immediacy and a human dimension to a fascinating part of the world that is rarely seen by Western tourists. ... Product Description
The book documents the historical perspective offloods in Bangladesh with environmental, socio- economic and infrastructural impacts. The studyintensively focuses on two villages of differentgeophysical conditions and addresses the indigenouspractices and coping ability of local people. Thebook reports that people in an area with lowflooding and with better socioeconomic circumstancesare more likely to cope with impacts compared topeople in areas with high and sudden flooding.Similarly, households? ability to cope variesdepending on people?s socioeconomic conditions, suchas education, income and occupation. Although floodsin Bangladesh generate socioeconomic misery andcause damage to the environment, health andinfrastructure, people?s indigenous copingstrategies have helped them to reduce significantlytheir vulnerability. Such flood-mitigatingstrategies should be well recognized and emphasizedfurther via proper dissemination of informationthrough an early-warning system and subsequentlyexternal assistance. ... Product Description
... Product Description
The Brahmaputra, also called Tsangpo-Brahmaputra, is a trans-boundary river and one of the major rivers of Asia. From its origin in southwestern Tibet as the Yarlung Zangbo River, it flows across southern Tibet to break through the Himalayas in great gorges and into Arunachal Pradesh where it is known as Dihang. It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as Brahmaputra and south through Bangladesh as the Jamuna (not to be mistaken with Yamuna of India). There it merges with the Ganges to form a vast delta. About 1,800 miles (2,900 km) long, the river is an important source for irrigation and transportation. Its upper course was long unknown, and its identity with the Yarlung Tsangpo was only established by exploration in 1884-86. This river is often called Tsangpo-Brahmaputra river. The average depth of river is 124 feet (38 m) and maximum depth is 380 feet (120 m). In Bangladesh the river merges with the Ganges and splits into two: the Padma and Meghna River. When it merges with the Ganges it forms the world's largest delta, the Sunderbans. ... Read more

Product Description
The greater haor basin in the northeastern part of the country covering vast area is a flash flood zone. In Bangladesh, modelling and dissemination of forecasts and warnings is much weaker for flash floods as no one organization with overall responsibility for disseminating flood forecasts and warnings to potential users. This book is an attempt to fulfill such requirement by extensive use of scientific and traditional information, providing probability information for assessment of flash flood vulnerability. It offers new opportunities to develop and implement a user-friendly, interactive decision support system for flood forecasting and identify the affected areas using dynamic modelling. The book concludes with an effective early warning system that can forecast warning in advance. It will change the existing hazard scenario and facilitate informed decision making in adopting proper measures for preparedness, mitigation, planning and management. This kind of advance warning will help the authorities for better flood preparedness and also effective mitigation. ... Read more

Product Description
The purpose of this volume is to create an awareness among managers and planners concerned with natural resources and environmental management, about usefulness of remote sensing and geographic information system techniques in mapping, monitoring and managing the land and its resources in tropical environments. Remote sensing is a key issue, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, where more than half of the world's natural disasters occur, and adding pressure on national and regional efforts to achieve the goals of sustainable development. It is recognized that monitoring the Earth's environment by space technologies, like remote sensing, provides an opportunity for greater information sharing and predicting changes in the Earth's environment. ... Product Description
Over the past 25 years labour migration from Bangladesh has registered a steady increase. From 1990 onwards on an average 2,25,000 Bangladeshis are migrating on short-term employment. The recent trend of the bulk of the migrants is more towards semi and unskilled labour migration. Major outflow of Bangladeshi labour generated significant financial flow to the country in the form of remittance. However, due to increase in the flow of unskilled and semi- skilled labour, remittance is increasing at a much lower rate than the labour flow. Remittance is crucial for Bangladesh's economy. It constitutes almost one-third of the foreign exchange earning. In 1998-99, remittance contributed 22 percent in financing imports. Studies have shown it has strong positive impact on GDP, and also on consumption and investment. This research assesses to identify the role of remittance in rural development. It also evaluates current uses and impacts of remittance, the characteristics of remittance sending and remittance receiving persons. The research also explores the problems and possible potentials in effective uses of remittance for rural development through investment in productive sectors. ... Read more

Urban and rural interaction is very dynamic in a rural dominated economy like Bangladesh. The study focused on three sectors: Flow of goods, flow of people in terms of migration/commuters and transportation to find out how and in what extent they are linked. It also searched the answer of the question: if the rural areas can extract maximum benefits from the city or if the city is getting maximum incentives or giving maximum services to its rural population in south west part of Bangladesh. A model has been developed to find the complex interactions between cities and rural areas based on some criteria. The book offers a very good academic research outcome to share with other scholars who are working in this same academic field. ... Read more

However, per-capita (inflation-adjusted) GDP has more than doubled since 1975, and the poverty rate has fallen by 20% since the early 1990s. The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies. Dhaka, the capital, and other urban centers have been the driving force behind this growth. Geographically, the country straddles the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and is subject to annual monsoon floods and cyclones. Bangladesh has the longest unbroken sea beach in the world in the Cox's Bazar. The government is a parliamentary democracy.
