In an unprecedented show of force, organization and skill, two proscribed Islamist militant organizations exploded more than 450 bombs within a span of less than an hour throughout Bangladesh on 17 August 2005 sending a strong message that they were a force to be reckoned with.  This catastrophic event, followed by a number of suicide attacks, forced the then reluctant Bangladeshi government, a coalition of center-right parties with two Islamists among them, to acknowledge the existence of a network of militants and take action against this threat.

Against this backdrop, this book is the first academic study on the growing Islamist militancy in Bangladesh. It examines the relevance, significance and trajectories of militant Islamist groups in Bangladesh, exploring the complex web of domestic, regional and international events and dynamics that have both engendered and strengthened Islamist militancy in Bangladesh. The three factors - domestic, regional and international aspects - are each discussed separately and their connection and links are analyzed. It goes on to consider possible future trajectories of militant Islamism in Bangladesh.

Very informative
A well written book on a very important episode of Bangladesh. With appropriate reference, this book elaborates the events and analyzes the events carefully. Of course one may argue that the author uses leftist methods or portrays the events in leftist observations. However you cannot totally deduct the presence of the historian himself from the equation which he is laying out. One problem - the author uses long sentences, reminiscent of the old Indian English writing style, and the reader grapples with the meaning at the end of the long sentence. Thats irritating. ... A solid addition to any world political memoir collection
Not all who are imprisoned are criminals. "Notes from a Prison: Bangladesh" is a memoir from Muhiuddin Kahn Alamgir" as he reflects on how he was faced with a corrupt political system and how he was forced into a Bangladesh prison only to escape and become a member of the country's parliament. A whirlwind tale of political corruption and turmoil, "Notes from a Prison" is a solid addition to any world political memoir collection.

Freedoms we hold dear
My father, who wrote this book, chronicles the persecution of him and his family by the military backed government that took over Bangladesh from January 2007 for nearly two years until democracy was restored. It's a chilling reminder that the freedoms we hold dear are not solidly entrenched in new democracies - and that persecution by Government without due process must be fought and not negotiated with. ... In the past decade concern has been raised through independent channels that nurses in Bangladesh do not provide active hands on care directly to patients as envisioned when the British nursing model was first introduced decades ago. The objective of the study was to observe the activities nurses engaged in during their working hours on major medical and surgical wards. A total of 24,587min of nursing activities were recorded by three observers in 18 hospitals between the hours of 05.00 and 23.00h over a 3 month period. These were compared with reports of the nurses about their activities, and indirectly with the activities outlined in the nursing curriculum. Nurses in government hospitals spent only 5.3% of their working time in direct contact with their patients. Paperwork and indirect patient care occupied nurses for 32.4% of their time while 50.1% fell under the category of unproductive time such as time away from the ward and chatting with other nurses. Hospital support workers and patients' relatives acted as nurse surrogates. When asked how they spent their day, nurses reported what the curriculum specifies but not what was observed. As a consequence policy decisions have not consistently reflected this reality. By contrast, nurses in the hospitals outside the government system were found to spend 22.7% directly with patients. A deeper understanding of nurse's behaviour on the wards is required to determine the desired role of the nurse that will, in turn, feed into nursing policy and decisions related to resource allocation. ...
