5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
Upon seeing the title of Sarah Hill's Book, "Weaving New Worlds: Southeastern Cherokee Women and Their Basketry," one might think this is a book only about Indian baskets or a how-to manual for making baskets. Both of these assumptions would be far from the truth. "Weaving New Worlds" is a broad, masterful compilation of research and expression of ideas on Cherokee culture. Put simply and without hyperbole, it is one of the best books one will find on Cherokee History.

The book focuses on what has become the Eastern Band of Cherokees in western North Carolina. Though Hill writes an excellent history of the Cherokees prior to their forced removal by the federal government in the late 1830s, she does not attempt to tell any aspect of the story of the Cherokees who settled in Oklahoma. The strength of her work is in the creative chronology she provides and in her description of the environment of the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Hill divides her work into four chapters: Rivercane, White Oak, Honeysuckle, and Red Maple. These chapter names derive from the material Cherokee women used to weave their baskets. The author cleverly interweaves the shifts in Cherokee history with the shift in basket making and the materials from which the baskets were made.

The Prologue is a stand alone, worthy essay in itself. It describes with tremendous knowledge the plants and animals of the southern Appalachians and how the Cherokees used these resources. In reading Hills's Prologue, one feels they are diving into the nuts and bolts of history. There are parts of the Prologue and in Hill's writing on specific plants that are as good as historical writing gets.

It is rare to find a book this focused and replete with encyclopedic information. It is highly recommended for those interested in the history of the southern Appalachians, western North Carolina, or the Cherokees. Also, this book should be read by anyone vacationing to the Great Smoky Mountains. It will vastly increase one's understanding and appreciation of just what they are seeing when they cross into the nation's most visited national park.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Resource
This book is fantastic.Hill covers an array of subjects about Cherokee life, family, politics, beliefs, oral traditions, aesthetics - all relating to the central theme of basket-making. Well-researched and documented. While maintaining excellent scholarship, Hill write in a natural, understandable manner free of academic jargon.Essential to anyone studying Cherokee culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars an ambitious and groundbreaking study
A reviewer in The Atlanta History Journal says this book is "destined to become a classic reference text to which future scholars of Native American material culture will always return." It is, the reviewcontinues, "keenly attuned to how basketry figures in the spiritualand material lives of the Southeastern Cherokee." I agree with thereviewer, but this book is more than a study of material culture, it is ahistory of women told by looking at their beautiful, enduring work withbaskets. There is nothing like it for learning Southeastern Cherokeehistory.

5-0 out of 5 stars "beautifully written, brilliantly organized history"
Using baskets, the oldest mother-to-daughter tradition still surviving among Cherokee women, Hill traces changes among Southeastern Cherokees and their environments over a 300-year period. Weaving New Worlds has just beenawarded the Julia Cherry Spruill prize for the best book in Southernwomen's history published in 1997, and was described in the award as"beautifully written and brilliantly organized." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars weaving with birch bark
This book carries birch bark weaving to a new level relative to what is available in English. The information on bark harvesting and care is really great--good pictures and good description of the several methods of harvesting birch bark. The projects described start with the very basics and proceed to more advanced baskets. The photos and instructions are generally good and even the beginner should be able to work through the projects by starting with the basics. Birch bark basketry can be divided into two very general categories--weaving and using various sized sheets of bark to containers. This book covers both types of bark use. It is a very good introduction to the type of birch bark use practiced in Scandinavia and Russia--across the range of white barked birches. These methods came to the U.S. with immigrants from Finland and Sweden in particular. The style of basketry described is very different from that which evolved among the various Native American peoples across northern North America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
It's been one of my longings, to find a book like this, and finally here it is!Itis beautiful, and I am reading it cover to cover before I try the patterns.

The pictures are clear, well labeled and the instructions are also clear and well sequenced.

I also enjoy reading about the history of this basketry in Novogrod, Russia. And I also like the inclusion of so many Russian words that are relevant. There is plenty of birch bark in the Adirondacks and I am so pleased to read that it is possible to use it without harming the trees.

It is a typically superb product from Flo Hoppe and friends.
I am so excited about it!Thankyoufor doing this book!It fills a very empty gap in the literature of basketry.

I would like to see more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly delightful!
Plaited Basketry with Birch Bark is a visual treat, rich with superbly photographed historic and contemporary samples. The artistry is exquisite; the instructions are concise and easy to follow, the information fascinating.Beginners may wish to try palm leaf to master the steps in those juicy bead weavings before stepping up to birch bark (I fear my neighbors have noticed my greedy eyes on their trees)! But the view of ancient times (the Iceman) to current fashions (those divinely woven beads) could not be presented more perfectly than is done in this book.Leap for it!You'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
This book is a breath-taking work.
Initially I was visually impressed by the layout and the number of photographs included for such a low price and then,as I explored further, by the scope and depth of the subject. There is even a detailed chapter on actually harvesting birch bark which was fascinating. However paper can be substituted for those of us without a Russian forest in our back yard!
I'm a paper artist not a basket maker so I appreciate the detailed and well written instructions by Flo Hoppe and the numerous illustations accompanying the many projects. As a complete novice, I have so far mastered the woven cubes which make wonderful beads. I doubt I will ever achieve the mastery needed for some of the projects but appreciate their artistry, complexy and the history behind them.
As if the exquisite work of Vladimir Yarish was not enough, this bookalso includes an extensive artists' gallery with innovative work by many well known basket makers.
This is not a light weight book, figuratively or literally, and a worthy addition to anyone's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flo Hoppe Wicker Basketry
I love this book and have been trying to obtain it for some time.It originally came from the Seattle Public Library and is in wonderful condition for a used book.I love it and will definitely order from this supplier again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Variety of Baskets
This Basket book has baskets to make for all skill levels.
Some are more intrakit. some are very plain, but very pretty
for every day use. This book has very good picture for instruction of the various weaves.I take a class in basket making and one of the other students had the book and I knew I
needed this book to make baskets. It also has colored pictures which I like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flo has done it a second time!!
I thought that Flo wrote the "bible" on round reed baskets with her first book and she has out-done herself with this 2nd one. If you are experienced at making baskets with round reed and you want a challenge, get this book. If you need a good reference to start with simpler baskets, get her first one. This bookhas some stunning baskets. She gives excellent illustrations and directions anyone can follow. As a teacher of basketry I would not be without it for reference and a source for many beautiful baskets for my students to make. ... Read more

Product Description
The Haida and the Tlingit people of the northern Northwest Coast are renowned for their outstanding arts, among them elegant spruce-root basketry. Prized by non-Native collectors for more than a century, these finely woven creations are found in museums and private collections all over the world. Despite the continued popularity of these baskets, there is little published about them.

Sharon Busby examines the history and evolution of spruce-root basketry, starting with the archaeological evidence of baskets older than the Egyptian pyramids. She describes traditional uses and forms, as well as changes in style when basketry became part of the souvenir trade that developed in the late 1880s. She also describes the heroic efforts of 20th-century Haida and Tlingit teachers who kept the ancient traditions alive and the contemporary weavers who have revitalized the art.

Spruce-Root Basketry of the Haida and Tlingit provides the largest collection of color images of Haida and Tlingit baskets ever published, many of them for the first time. The skillful photography of Ron Reeder presents a visual history of spruce-root basketry from the 1850s to the present. He captures the lustrous patina of the old baskets made for traditional Native uses as well as the impressive variety of baskets made for sale in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Photographs also portrays the baskets made today by weavers who are a living part of a long tradition.

Historical photographs enhance the account of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and provide a visual counterpoint to the vibrant color images of the baskets today.Drawings by Margaret Davidson explain the complex weaving techniques used in these baskets for millennia. The combination of compelling images and informative text makes this book a welcome addition to the literature of basketry and Northwest Coast art for students, collectors, and admirers of this art form. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Crafts of Saudi Arabia
I found this book helpful as an expat living in Saudi Arabia. The emphasis was heavily focused on textiles, which was very informative. The other crafts were also interesting and I would have enjoyed more information regarding those items.Overall, a very good reference book and learning tool on this little known country.

5-0 out of 5 stars A look at a lifestyle
This is a lovely volume of native crafts that would be well appreciated by the individual interested in the arts and crafts of a nomadic people. Some of the textiles displayed are worthy of a museum as are some of the pieces of equipment used to make them. There are old photos even showing how some of the cultural equipment was actually used.Much of the material presented was collected in the suqs (market places) in Taif, Riyadh, and Jiddah, places to which I had been myself and where I had also collected some craft objects which I display in my own home.As growing numbers of the world's community begin to acquire and prefer the more "perfect," cheaper, mass produced commodoties of our age of technology, the knowledge of these crafts will undoubtedly dwindle.Hopefully those with an appreciation of the knowledge and artistic ability of the old crafsman will preserve with loving care some of the few pieces that remain.I know some large silver bedouin beads I purchased in the women's suq in Riyadh have a pride of place in my home; I use them as Christmas tree ornaments every year and treasure them! ...
