3-0 out of 5 stars Black Eye
While the story is intriguing, the author does very little to tie the ancient mysteries of Egyptian religion to the occult use of the "evil eye" in the Western historical paradigm. While the author dwells on Satanist metaphors and symbology (to a tiresome extent), he rarely gets around to expounding the rites of Horus. In short, the "evil eye" caricature is played to marketed audience who apparently is not expected to think about the eye of Horus or the shattering of the Antui.Berenstain's evil eye would be powerless against a princess of Isis.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can stock your library with Berenstain Bear books
Sister Bear is nervous about school when Brother mentions that he wishes summer vacation would just be over already. (That is *so* unrealistic.)

But her mother takes her to meet her new kindergarten teacher, and that goes all right. Then we get a quick review of Sister's first day of school, including the various things a child might do in kindergarten, and finally we see that she's excited about school.

This book would do well to calm a nervous child going off to school for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK AS A KID AND NOW MY SON DOES TOO!
My son recently started preschool and I remembered I loved this book as a child. I particularly remember how vibrant the pictures were and how my imagination ran wild with them. It was a great way to prepare him for his first day of school and one we continue to read over and over and over! A definate classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
Book shows that Sister is nervous about starting kindergarten. She meets the teacher Mrs. Honey before school starts. First she is nervous but soon she starts to relax and enjoy herself and have fun. I love the part where she holds another kindergartener's hand on the bus. So often little kids only think of themselves and not others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children just starting to school
If you're looking for a book to introduce your child to what happens at school, then look no further.Sister Bear will be going to school for the first time in this book and in preparation, Mama takes her to see her kindergarten teacher for lunch. She has a wonderful time and then brother takes her to school with him and helps her get on the bus.Sister is kind and holds the hand of another little bear who seems very afraid and they go into class together. That part was really sweet! This book does a wonderful job in teaching children what school is about and what to expect. If Brother and Sister can do it, then we can too! This is a great hit at our house and I highly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Story
Jane hissey has a great way of bringing humor and feeling into this book.I found myself laughing more than once.Today, in this throw-away world, it was fun and refreshing to see that one pair of trousers could be used for so many things! This could lead to some great discussions of reusing things at home. The illustrations are soft and beautiful.Very nice book!Terri "Hunter" Ward, author of One Starry Night and Aunt Tami's Strawberry Farm.

5-0 out of 5 stars GET THIS BOOK!
This book is a must-have for all parents of young children. I know it will become a family favorite in your family as it has in mine. It is one of the few picture books I have kept on my shelf (I'm 14 now)because of howspecial it is; I could never give it up.I don't think anyone would beable to say anything bad about this book. It has amazing illustrations. They are super cute, colorful, and life-like. The story is about a teddybear who awakens to find that his trousers have been misplaced. He goesaround all day asking his friends if they have seen them. They all say thesame thing- they were using them (for some very unique purposes) but whenthey were finished with them they let someone else use them. Finaly LittleBear catches up with his pants and it's worth the wait. If you decide topurchase this book pick up a couple more of Jane Hissey's Old Bear stories, you won't be dissapionted in any of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Bear's Trousers is a visual delight and very sweet
Our (hard copy) of, Little Bear's Trousers, has been read dozens of times! The illustrations are extraordinary, and the creative uses Little Bear's friends make of his trousers are inventive and practical! The story has ajoyful ending wherein all the friends can celebrate not only the return ofLittle Bear's trousers but some time together enjoying a bit of cake.TheONLY complaint I would make about this book (and which was actually pointedout to me by my six 1/2 year old daughter) is that of the nine characters, only two are female. We, however, have rectified this situation bygranting them a new sexual status virtually everytime we read this book. Both of my kids (one boy, one girl) adore this book and have for years. Highly recommeded! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wondeful illustrations of the ghosts in this first rate Lakota legend
I have liked Charles Reasoner's artwork for these Native American Lore & Legends series books, but "Brave Bear and the Ghosts: A Sioux Legend" is my new favorite because of the way he does the ghosts. You get a hint of it from the cover painting with Brave Bear on the left and a ghost riding a ghost horse on the right. But the ghosts are, for the most part, more purple than what you see.Reasoner's figures usually do not have mouths and for eyes just the little slits we would all associate with Snoopy in the "Peanuts" cartoons. This time, there are mouths for these figures, but mouths that suggest the space between the cranium and the jaw on a skull. The eyes are still little slits, but they have a dark circle around them. The shades of purple are also really cool.Too bad they are the villains in the story, retold by Gloria Dominic.

It is always winter in the land of ghosts and as they sit around talking about how much fun it is to scare people one of them tells of Brave Bear, a warrior and hunter who laughs in the face of death. The ghosts make a bet that the first ghost to scare Brave Bear will win the ghost horses of the others. But when they go after Brave Bear to win their bet he keeps making bets with them and winning their horses. This is fairly predictable, since Brave Bear is the hero of the tale. But what is great are all the clever ways that Brave Bear bests each of the ghosts. They are as cool as the illustrations of the ghosts, which is why this Sioux story has become one of my favorites.Plus, there is a punch line at the end that will appeal to young readers as well.

The back of the book talks about the Sioux, which is problematic because ever since "Dances With Wolves" most of us have learned that these people called themselves the Lakota (or Dakota or Nakota), and that the word "Sioux" is the Ojibwa word for "snake."That is covered in the back of this book, but then the book continues to use the derogatory term, but without justifying why (if kids can learn to call a brontosaurus an apatosaurus, they can learn to call the Sioux the Lakota). Is the point here that racism is okay if one Native American tribe hangs a derogatory name on another as opposed to having it done by the settlers? This book is going to be the first opportunity for many young readers to find out about this particular society, so this really should have been a Lakota (or Dakota or Nakota) legend.

The back of the book covers the homeland, food and clothing, and where the people called in this book the Sioux live today. Young readers will also find a Glossary of terms from "akicita" to "travios," and a list of important dates that begins with the 1700s when these people became expert horsemen and 1979 when the U.S. Supreme Court awarded them $105 million for the taking of their lands, which settled a legal action begun in 1923.This section is illustrated with historic photographs of these people and contemporary shots of artifacts. If the explanation for the name of the Sioux was not included here I would round down, but hopefully teachers and parents can rectify the decision made here. ... Read more
