Product Description
The grizzly bear has always inspired awe in man, but the animal's true nature and character has long been shrouded in myth. Few people know grizzlies as Andy Russell does, and in Grizzly Country he shares stories from a lifetime of experience observing them, first as hunter, then as cameraman. In wonderfully engaging prose, he reveals the life cycle of this remarkable creature.

Like Farley Mowat's Never Cry Wolf, Grizzly Country opened a new way of thinking about an oft-misunderstood predator. It is a book for anyone interested in wild America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the most accurate portrayal of the grizzly that has ever been written
Grizzly Country is a collection of stories of the first hand experiences of a man who lived his entire life in the wilderness with the great bears. It is a realistic view of the grizzly as he really is, not a blood and guts story of how "It's us or them" nor is it a highly emotional story about the plight of the bears, but rather a realistic view of the bear and of his past and future.

Andy Russell is a man who knows the true character of the bear and has a realistic understanding of the dangers and joys of living in bear country. This book is entertaining, very informative and at many times very humorous. The format is wonderful, it is like sitting on the porch and listening to the tales of an old man's lifetime of adventures and it's never dull or boring. From his childhood to his experiences as a hunting guide and wildlife photographer in bear country, you will sense that this is a man who knows what he's talking about.

Whether you are a hunter, an environmentalist or just a lover of the outdoors this is certain to be a wonderful addition to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand old classic by man with a lifetime of experience
Andy Russell grew up in grizzly country, married a young woman who hadalso grown up in grizzly, and raised a family in grizzly country. Thestories are the real thing, with all the wonder and humor that comes fromlifetimes of experience with wildlife. This book, with Frank Duqesne's NOROOM FOR BEARS, and Enos Mills' THE GRIZZLY, is a classic that belongs onthe shelf of everyone interested in the grizzly and its future in NorthAmerica.

Andy Russell's Grizzly Country blends a rich history of concernfor this bear with some gentle and telling words to the wise. He even gotahead of the scientists in some cases. For instance, biologists used toinsist that the bears living on the coast of Alaska were not the samespecies as the bears living inland. Russell wryly wrote how strange it wasto see a bear moving up one side of a mountain, and become another speciesjust by crossing the ridge and moving inland, down the other side of themountain.

Russell saw grizzlies as a child, and raised his kids aroundthe bears. He has great stories to tell, stories of humor, and depth. Thisis a very fine book, cover to cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice pocket guide
As the title suggests this is a "Pocket Guide", and contains mostly field information in a handy small book.In it you will find tidbits about each of the bears, their habitats, feeding patterns, and some information on how to observe them in the wild. All in all a very well done field guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars key words: this is a 'pocket' book
A very nice introduction to the 3 species of bears in Alaska: polar, brown/grizzlie, and black. The book nicely describes each bear separately and has some really nice color photos.Migration/territorial patterns, future outlook of the bears, and best places to view the bears are alluseful information. However, this is a very small book, only 94 pages, andone can't help wishing for more information. This is a 'pocket' guide, soif you are only looking for cursory information in the field, this will dofine, but if you already know a bit about bears, you might want to buy amore substantial book. This book is kind of a nice trailer for a movie, but not the actual movie. ... Product Description
"There have always been bear stories, as long as there have been campfires and shadows in the night, and as long as humans have shared the earth with their fellow predators....

"Part of humankind’s enduring fascination and connection with bears lies in the similarity between us and them. Bears stand upright and their footprints resemble ours. A skinned bear looks much like a naked person. They are intelligent and independent, possessed of distinct personalities. They exemplify maternal care, discipline, and teaching, and they nurse in a sitting position. They can use a claw like a finger or two claws like chopsticks. They can travel fast and lose their tempers. They are omnivorous, and can kill and eat us, as we can kill and eat them. Resilient, brave, and defiant, the California grizzly did not go quietly."—Susan Snyder, from the Introduction

_Bear in Mind_ is the story of the California grizzly bear. Once arguably the most powerful and terrifying animal in the California landscape, he now lives in the imagination, a disembodied symbol of the romantic West. _Bear in Mind_ is also a portal into one of California’s great resources, the Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley. More than 150 images from the library’s archives and collections—newspaper illustrations from the gold rush, paintings from early scientific expeditions, photo albums, sheet music, settlers’ diaries, fruit-crate labels, and more—accompany the bear stories of Indians, explorers, vaqueros, forty-niners, and naturalists, among others. The result is a uniquely compelling natural history, a grand book worthy of its subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I absolutely enjoyed this book along with the great photographs and illustrations. It is hard to imagine that the great bear once roamed so much of California, especially in the modern day concrete jungles that sprouted from such pristine wildlife habitat. Ms. Snyder did a great job of putting together and telling the stories of this facsinating animal. Can you imagine, hiking Malibu beach and seeing grizzlies feasting on a beached whale? I was born 100 years too late. If you love grizzlies, or California history, buy this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A National Monument
While this book is as hefty as a grizzly, and costs as much as a concert ticket (granted, only an upper mezzanine seat), Bear In Mind is *the* book for my coffee table: I want to read it luxuriously, I want to pore over every written word, every detail of art and artifact in its pages. I want my Californian friends to see it. I want to get copies for their homes. This book reclaims the legacy of the grizzly, and ought to replace the bear flag as the symbol of state and national pride and humility. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fortress of the Grizzlies
I looked forward to reading this book since I took a trip with the author to the Khutzeymateen several years ago. At that time Dan was talking about writing the book. I was happy to see that the bears are thriving and glad that "Lucy" is still doing well. I can't wait to return for another trip someday.

1-0 out of 5 stars Environmentalism at its worst
Karsten Heuer is an excellent writer of fiction, particularly in the way he weaves half-truths and worrisome pronouncements on the impending death of Mother Nature into his narrative. There isn't enough room in this space to debunk his jaundiced and unsubstantiated view of the natural world.Suffice it to say that anyone looking for a well researched book on the actual state of planet Earth, one that is backed up by meticulous footnotes and references to readily accessible facts, should read "The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World" by Bjorn Lomborg, a world-renowned statistician with credentials to match his acclaimed work.Walking the Big Wild Fantasy is a better title for Heuer's green musings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glaciers, wild animals, & personal difficulties
Walking The Big Wild: From Yellowstone To The Yukon On The Grizzly Bears' Trail by wildlife biologist and member of the Y2Y Conservation Initiative Karsten Heuer, is the expressive and panoramic saga of an incredible 3,400 kilometer hike from the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming to the shores of Watson Lake in the Yukon. A captivating, descriptive, informative journey showcasing the splendor of nature and revealing its intense vulnerability to human expansion, Walking The Big Wild is a grand saga of glaciers, wild animals, personal difficulties, and great physical challenges, and very highly recommended reading for non-specialist general readers with an interest in environmental issues, nature and wildlife, and Rocky Mountain and Canadian wilderness enthusiasts. ...
