Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tongeren (French: Tongres, German: Tongern) is a city and municipality located in the province of Limburg, Flemish region, Belgium. Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium. Inhabited in the Roman period by the Tungri, and known as Atuatuca Tungrorum, it was the administrative centre of the district under Roman rule. Before the Roman conquests, this area was inhabited by the Atuatuci, part of the Belgic confederacy. During Julius Caesar?s campaigns in this area in the 1st century BC, the Belgae united against Caesar. The Atuatuci were too late for the general Belgic muster and defeat by Caesar; they retreated to their town where the Romans besieged them. They decided to surrender and gave up most of their weapons, but next day sortied against the Roman troops, who defeated them. The day after, the Romans broke down the undefended gates and sold the entire tribe of the Atuatuci into slavery. ... Read more

The municipality of Seraing includes the old communes of Boncelles, Jemeppe-sur-Meuse, and Ougrée. With Liège, Herstal, Saint-Nicolas, Ans, and Flémalle it forms the greater Liège agglomeration (600 000 habitants). To the south of Seraing are the Condroz, followed by the Ardennes region. In addition to its steel factories, Seraing counts a famous crystal manufacture at Val Saint Lambert, which has been operating on the site of an old Cistercian abbey since 1826. The site of the Arcelor steel company, previously known as Cockerill-Sambre, is the former summer residence of the prince-bishops of Liège. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very revealing
This book is a very interesting and very revealing analysis of Dutch culture and Dutch character.Although Horst is an insider, he seems to be well aware of the kinds of questions that outsiders have about Dutch culture. As an insider, he has a thorough understanding of what makes the Dutch tick.

The book is organized into the 6 broad tropics that anthropologists at the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam have identified as characterizing the Dutch: egalitarian, utilitarian, organized, trade-oriented, privacy-minded, and having a debt of honor. At times, however, this division seems to be overlaid onto the book, rather than providing an essential framework.Inside each chapter, Horst meanders through a wide range of information, interweaving such details as a synopsis of Dutch history, an analysis of modern politics and politicians, lyrics from popular music, and sample lonely heart classifieds. At all times, the focus is on the Dutch mindset, Dutch attitudes, and where they come from.I found the book to be very informative, and I would recommend it to anyone planning a long or short visit in the Netherlands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable as a practical guide for undertanding the Dutch
This book was recommended to me by the Director of Cultural Affairs at a foreign embassy in the Hague as the best book available for understandingcontemporary Dutch society. It's informal yet thorough, clearly written, and eminently practical.Neither academic nor touristic, the book is idealfor people from a foreign country who are moving to the Netherlands or willbe spending a good quantity of time there.I bought my copy in theNetherlands at Veenstra Bookhandel in Amsterdam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moeurs et coutûmes du peuple néerlandais
... Read more

André de Vries explores the varied landmarks of Flanders, both rural and urban, to reveal this region's unique character. Considering great cities such as Ghent, Antwerp, and Bruges, he traces the development of a civic culture based on both trade and ideas, in which religion and language play a vital part. Looking too at the Flemish countryside, he explains the role of festivals and folk culture, gluttony and pleasure, in the survival of a strongly local identity. ... Read more

Product Description

Maps of Holland and Belgium from Joan Blaeu's exquisite world atlas of 1665 The finest and most comprehensive baroque atlas was Joan Blaeu's exceptional Atlas Maior, completed in 1665. The original eleven-volume Latin edition, containing 594 maps, put Blaeu ahead of his staunch competitor, mapmaker Joanes Janssonius, whose rivalry inspired Blaeu to produce a grandiose edition of the largest and most complete atlas to date. Covering Arctica, Europe, Africa, Asia, and America, Blaeu's Atlas Maior was a remarkable achievement and remains to this day one of history's finest examples of mapmaking. This reprint, including all 63 maps of Belgium and Holland (known in 1665 as the Republic of the United Netherlands and the Spanish or Royal Netherlands), is made from the National Library of Vienna's colored, gold-heightened copy, thus assuring the best possible detail and quality. Alongside original quotes from Joan Blaeu relating to the individual maps, the new text by Peter van der Krogt explains the historical and cultural associations and introduces the reader into the fascinating world of early modern cartography. The text is in Dutch, French and English. The author: Peter van der Krogt, the leading expert in the field of Dutch atlases, is a collaborator on the Explokart Research Program for the History of Cartography at the University of Utrecht's Faculty of Geosciences. Since 1990 he has been working on Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici, the carto-bibliography of atlases published in the Netherlands. His second project is the compilation, in co-operation with the Nijmegen University, of an illustrated and annotated catalogue of the Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem, the most important multi-volume atlaspreserved in the Austrian National Library, which was added to Unesco's ?Memory of the World? register in 2004.
