Excerpt:Flag British Honduras was a British colony that is now the independent nation of Belize. First colonised by Spaniards in the seventeenth century, the territory on the east coast of Central America, south of Mexico, became a British crown colony from 1862 until 1964, when it became self-governing. Belize became fully independent from the United Kingdom in 1981. Belize was the last continental possession of the United Kingdom in the Americas. For history prior to 1862 and following 1981, see History of Belize (1502-1862) and History of Belize#Independent Belize. The Treaty of Versailles (1783) between Britain and Spain, gave the British rights to cut logwood between the Hondo and Belize rivers. In 1862, the Settlement of Belize in the Bay of Honduras was declared a British colony called British Honduras, and the crown's representative was elevated to a lieutenant governor, subordinate to the governor of Jamaica. As the British consolidated their settlement and pushed deeper into the interior in search of mahogany in the late eighteenth century, they encountered resistance from the Maya. In the second half of the nineteenth century, however, a combination of events outside and inside the colony redefined the position of the Maya. During the Caste War in Yucatán, a devastating struggle that halved the population of the area...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=172710 ... Read more

Product Description
The award winning thesis focussed on Post-Emancipation systems of labour control using a comparative analysis of the United States, from 1865 to 'Redemption' in 1877, & the British Caribbean colonies of Belize & Jamaica, from Emancipation in 1838 until Crown Colony rule, 1871 for Belize, & 1866 for Jamaica. The purpose being to highlight the differences & similarities, & further an understanding of why certain historical phenomena occurred in 1 or 2 regions & not in another. The fundamental argument being that there was no simple step from slavery to freedom. That the local oligarchies in each region attempted to prevent, the former 'Negro' slaves from attaining full freedom, economically or politically, after Emancipation; tackling the extent to which they were prepared to go with coercive tactics to achieve their aims, using a variety of primary/secondary sources. Thus, the transition was not from slavery to freedom but from one system of labour controls to another, maintaining a de facto slavery. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Ancient Maya ceramic economy during the Late to Terminal Classic Period (800-900 A.D.) is the focus of this book. The author employed ceramic thin section petrology, raw materials sourcing, and contextual archaeological analyses and samples from a variety of excavated sites in the Belize River Valley region were included: Pacbitun, Cahal Pech, Baking Pot, El Pilar, Xunantunich, Blackman Eddy, Floral Park, and Ontario Village. Standardized petrofabric descriptions enabled the definition of distribution spheres for the ceramics and the study uses intersite comparison of distributional patterning to explore issues such as the scale, integration and disposition of the ceramic economy. A number of economic models were used heuristically to examine the possible meaning of the distributional patterning observed. ... Read more

Product Description
Traces the intertwined histories of upland settlements and low-lying bajos among the ancient Maya as they developed from the Late Preclassic period until the area's abandonment around AD 850. Kunen argues that differences in access to resources resulted in highly patterned settlement remains and that community members who acquired the best and most diverse resources maintained an elevated social status. Her integration of three lines of evidence-settlement system, agricultural system, and ancient environment-breaks new ground in landscape research and in the study of Maya non-elite domestic organization. ... Product Description
The Maya built one of the great ancient civilizations in the New World, between AD 250 and 900. Famed for over 150 years for its cities buried deep in the Central American jungle, the origins of Maya culture have, nevertheless, remained obscure until quite recently. Over the past two decades, the Preclassic origins of complex society in the Maya area have been established by a series of innovative research projects. Among the best known of these is the study of Cuello, the earliest-known ancient Maya settlement. Excavations at Cuello over several seasons from 1975 to 1987 have yielded an unmatched picture of a pioneer tropical forest community. In this volume the origins of Maya civilization 1500 years ago are documented with detailed evidence on the environment, economy, buildings, crafts, ritual practices, burials and artistic imagery. ... Product Description

The first book on women’s political history in Belize, From Colony to Nation demonstrates that women were creators of and activists within the two principal political currents of twentieth-century Belize: colonial-middle class reform and popular labor-nationalism. As such, their alliances and struggles with colonial administrators, male reformers, and nationalists and with one another were central to the emergence of this improbable nation-state.

From Colony to Nation draws on extensive research and previously unmined sources such as almost one hundred interviews, colonial government records, the files of Belize’s first feminist organization, and court records. Anne S. Macpherson examines the tensions of the 1910s that led to the 1919 anticolonial riot; the reform project of the 1920s, in which Garveyite women were key state allies; the militant anticolonial labor movement of the 1930s; the more ambitious reform project of the 1940s; the successful but nonrevolutionary nationalist movement of the 1950s; and the gender dynamics of party politics and both Black Power and feminist challenges to the party system in the 1960s and 1970s.

From Colony to Nation connects to historiographies of racialized and gendered reform in colonial and other multiracial societies and of tensions between female activism and masculine authority within nationalist movements and postcolonial societies.
