5-0 out of 5 stars Temperate Forests
Starts with an introduction to the "Biomes of the World" then focuses on temperate forests around the world. Explains why temperate forests only grow in certain regions. Very informative and well researched. I only had two small complaints. Every so often the author used a rather slangy phrase which seemed out of place. Second, I did not like the way some of the maps were arranged. Those maps have red numbers marking the large areas of forests in a country and then the reader has to look at a separate list to read about the forests. I found them the hardest part of the book to read and enjoy. KWR, Children's Science Book Review ... Read more

Product Description

The biome—an area of the earth that shares similar geography, climate, animals, and plants—is the concept that forms the backbone for studying the living world. Without a firm understanding of how animals and plants have adapted to a particular region of the earth, students would not have a strong grasp of the fields of ecology and environmental science. The Greenwood Guides to Biomes of the World provides students with a solid foundation for understanding biomes and how they compare and interact with one another. With the exception of the introductory volume, which provides general background information, volumes focus on:

· Tropical rainforests and tropical seasonal rainforests

· The major types of temperate forests: boreal forests, broadleaf deciduous, Mediterranean woodland, and scrub

· The temperate grasslands and the tropical grasslands

· Deserts

· High altitudes and polar biomes

· Wetlands, ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams

· Saltwater biomes along coastlines, on the continental shelf, and the open sea.

The set also provides discussions, graphs, charts, and illustrations to provide students with a more sophisticated understanding of this essential scientific concepts.

Detailing the largest biome, this guide surveys the environmental threats to the earth’s oceans. Teaching students about coral reefs—the rainforests of the ocean—this educational resource explores topics such as the connection between increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the bleaching of the reefs. By comparing the size of an island of floating plastic and other trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to the state of Texas—and how that floating island impacts ocean life—the guide shows young environmentalists why consuming less plastic is important.
