Product Description
Of some 10 000 bird species in the world, 514 are to be found in Europe. Of these, twenty-six European globally threatened species risk extinction if their populations are not actively built up. This series of action plans for Europe's most threatened species is the result of a joint project carried out by BirdLife International in collaboration with Wetlands International, involving over 370 experts in almost every European country. The project was funded by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the European Commission's LIFE programme. This book will be of interest to conservationists at both national and local level, educators and all those interested in the conservation of Europe's bird heritage. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is by the authors of "Threatened Birds of Africa and Related Islands" (an UCBP/IUCN Red Data book publication). This book describes the 75 forests which must be conserved to protect the forest-dwelling birds identified in the earlier work. Most of the forests covered were chosen because they hold more than one threatened bird species, and the book presents a powerful argument for treating the forest as the unit of conservation concern, rather than the single species. Although primarily intended to set priorities for conservation, the book can be used as a guide to finding Africa's rarest birds. Rare primates and other fauna and flora are also included in the site descriptions. "This little book will serve as a handy manual for all those concerned about the future of African forests" - "Wilson Bulletin". "A commendable summary of what is known. Confirms how effective birds can be as indicators of sites of general biological significance" - Ostrich. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The various Red Data Books prepared by the IUCN and ICBP have set the standards for recognizing birds close to or at risk of extinction worldwide. This book, by focusing on vulnerable species living in or visiting Britain, sets out to define the British situation and to clearly establish both the importance of British populations and our own responsibilities for contributing to bird conservation.
Compiled by an editorial team drawn from the Nature Conservancy Council and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, it identifies 117 species that demand our care and attention. Obviously it includes species that breed in or visit Britain in small numbers and whose population are threatened by natural or man-made circumstances. However, it also deals with birds that are common or numerous but which, due to their localized distribution worldwide, have the greater part of their European populations in British sites.
Each of the species accounts provides up-to-date information on current populations, basic ecology, threats to the species and the legal protection and conservation measures now in force. General chapters deal with the state of Britain's various habitats, legal matters and conservation action for the future. This book should mean that no one, whether ornithologist, land manager or bureaucrat can plead ignorance when future land-use changes or management decisions threaten an endangered, vulnerable or important bird species. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Approximately 3,600 bird species occur in the 21 countries ofmainland Central and South America, of which 290 are listed as threatened. Taking a country-by-country, site-based approach, this book documents the 596 most important areas for the conservation of these threatened birds. Introductory chapters define Key Areas and the distribution of threatened species, describe habitats, threats and conservation, and identify the gaps in our knowledge of Neotropical birds.

""One would very much hope this book will become a manual for everyone involved in conservation policies in the neotropics"" - Bruno Walther, IBIS.

""I found the book almost addictive as I chased the cross-references from species to species, country to country"" -Long Point Bird Observatory Newsletter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tremendous Collection of Knowldege in One Book
This book is aimed at ornithologists, biologists, conservation workers, and birders active in Mexico,Central and South America the Neotropics.
As a birder and active conservationist I purchased this to obtain information on what may be productive birding areas to visit and also to see which areas may be the most important to direct my conservation efforts.I was not disappointed in how this book satisfied either of these goals.

Chapters in the book cover a brief description of each country including physical geography and descriptions of the richness of the avifauna and endemic bird species and information about threatened species of the country.Maps and lists of Endemic Bird Areas (EBA's) and Key Areas(important sites for conservation within the EBA's) are included for each country. Each Key Area is numbered and the text contains a section describing the area, habitat status, and conservation efforts as well as all endemic and threatened species present in each area. For example in checking Ecuador you can see that many of the localities for threatened birds and Key Areas are in the south and that the area titled Buenaventura or El Oro has eight threatened species. This area is listed as unprotected but now it is partly protected by Fundacion Jocotoco.

This book is very rich in information and a good resource for anyone interested in either pursuing the best biodiverse areas for birding or protecting them through conservation. Many sections of the book refer to the latin names of species and this was the only aspect of the book that I found cumbersome and anyone that is not totally familiar with latin bird names would also. ...
