5-0 out of 5 stars The first and still the best complete Australian raptor book
Jack and Lindsay Cupper's 'Hawks in Focus' is the first comprehensive photographic record of Australia's birds of prey. A compelling combination of natural history, photography, and anecdote, the book is not only highly readable but also generously peppered with descriptions of the authors' techniques for achieving their insights and photographs. Of particular interest is their pioneering work with grey falcons and letter-winged kites, achieved in some of the harshest, most isolated conditions on the Australian continent. The Cuppers never play up the danger of their endeavours, but the photographs of their incredible home-made aluminium telescopic towers, used to reach heights of eighty feet and more, are worth the price of the book alone. Rarely do naturalists write so well, achieving a book that is both ground-breaking natural history and hair-raising adventure. Without a doubt this is my favourite bird book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars hawks
I love this small book for hawk watching. It is compact and has just the basic views of numerous birds of prey. It goes beyond the Peterson guides in that they have nice pictures of each species flying and perched and of the different patterns for various age groups. It is concise. I read up on hawks using other guides but use this for the field as a review. It is great for kids because of the clear pictures and being small. ... Read more

Product Description
The next time you're in the countryside, keep your eyes on the sky. You just might see a red-tailed hawk soaring in circles above a highway or a field. North American hawks fall into four main groups: bird hawks, soaring hawks, kites, and harriers.

All over North America, suburbs are expanding into undeveloped land. As a result, the woods and prairies that are closest to cities are disappearing. Not all hawk species are as adaptable as red-tails, which have adjusted to suburban habitats and even live in cities. (One famous pair nests on an apartment building on Fifth Avenue, across from New York City's Central Park!) ... Read more

Product Description
With their featherless, wrinkled heads, vultures may seem funny-looking. When they soar in the air, however, vultures are as graceful as any bird in the sky. The California condor, a type of vulture, is magnificent in flight.

Vultures are birds of prey, which are also called "raptors." Like other raptors, vultures have curved claws called "talons," and sharp, hooked beaks for tearing apart prey. But they differ from other raptors in one important way -- vultures are scavengers. Almost all of their food is carrion (the bodies of dead animals). ... Read more
