5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comprehensive reference
Solid information, with extremely good sections on health care and health conditions and very good coverage on basic ownership issues such as grooming, safety, nutrition, routines etc.Has some information on behavior and training as well, but this doesn't go as deep as the other material. It covers finches and other birds as well as parrots, but much of the material is parrot-oriented.It would be the first book I'd recommend a new bird owner buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars new and experienced owners' manual
I'm pleased with this book purchase and can recommend it to both new and experienced companion parrot owners because it offers basic, simple information as well as more in-depth, veterinary-level advice. From bird species behaviors and "personality traits" to cage types to toy tips in what I'd classify as the "simpler" category to signs of disease and training tips and how to handle emergencies and disorders in the "heavier" category, Gary Gallerstein offers a ton of information. Luckily, there's more than one index to help find info if you're in a hurry: Index of Signs and General Index. There's also a detailed Table of Contents to help find information quickly, including appendices, weights and measures, etc.

From Fantasy Author Sandy Lender

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for every bird owner!
This is one of the most complete bird care books. It really should be in every bird owners home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bird owners manual
An excellent book that is easy to use as a reference and has the most current thinking on the correct way to care and feed birds.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook by Gary A. Gallerstein [Hardcover]
This book was purchased for historical purposes only to see how far we have come in aviculture.

I caution any new pet bird owner looking for a owner's handbook on birds to buy a CURRENT book--this is very important. Spend the extra dollars for the most updated information. Many things have changed over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you raise canaries, you must own this book!
This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds.Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back.It is an invaluable resource tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Value Ever
Having been involved in care of all sorts of animals for over 40 years and habitually buying books about each, I can say without reservation that this book is the best value for the dollar that I have ever purchased.Matthew Vriends is an internationally recognized expert on the species and he has provided us with an extraordinary handbook. The information, illustrations and photographs exceed anything I have ever purchased in a paperback edition of an animal care book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information provided
Very clear.Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who doesnot want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, ownerswith canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is somethingwrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfedcanaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to behandled is not true of birds who were not hand fed.So be aware that ifyour bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non handfed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note:Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it isgood to also be have the name of a vet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best up-to-date canary care book on the market.
Dr. Vriends' book is a comprehensive guide to keeping canaries. He is an expert on aviculture who has published many books on its various aspects. The present book covers canaries of type, color, and song varieties and isrichly illustrated with photographs and drawings which bring the readabletext to life. The information contained in the book is wide-ranging andaccurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!...Everything you need to know about canaries!
Yes!...This is a very valuable book to have. Theformat and layout are just perfect. Information?..it's all here. I'm going to use this book often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" for any young child interested in owning a bird.
Twitter and Tweet: Bringing Home a Bird is more than a children's picturebook - it's an extremely basic primer about the responsibilities and joys of owning a bird for a pet. Different birds have different requirements (parakeets and cockatiels like people but need a lot of attention, while finches and canaries are easy to keep but don't like to be touched). All pet birds need to have their cage cleaned often, a healthy diet preferably supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables, and regular veterinary checkups. Twitter and Tweet follows a young girl named Erin who befriends her pet parakeet and diligently takes care of him. The final two pages offer fun facts about parakeets and their life cycle. An absolute "must-have" for any young child interested in owning a bird.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Outdated Information, but Some Good Information too.
This book is obviously dated as it was written back when wild caught birds were available due to the fact that domestic raised birds were difficult to find. Annette, therefore gives information on taming a frightened bird instead of on a new baby African Grey Parrot loving to be cuddled.

She provides good information on the need for proper sized cages & play areas as well as information on making your bird's own climbing structure.

She has listed a good selection of foods to feed your bird, although there is no mention of a pelleted diet, which has now become a good basic staple in many birds' diets.

She has a section on diseases & how to keep your bird healthy with good information for you to follow.

The section on Understanding African Gray Parrots is very thorough and informative. This section, combined with the good information in several of the other sections, outweigh the dated information in a couple of the other sections of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Annette Wolter, African Grey Parrots
The publications (books) will be rated as soon as I have read them 2 times. However I would like to write an ordinary paper for publication in a well recommended international journal.

Can you recommend one? Or shall I surch for it myself?

The topic should include: How to bye an African Grey. Do not mix up parrots and dogs. Dogs, the humans establichedcontact with14.000 B.C. (Boessneck, 1985). Coresponding time for parrots is 200 years. Education of dogs is based on punischment/reward. That does not work on parrots. The parrot indetifies the punisher as a hawk or an other kind of predator.

Just a first idea of the content for a short publication from a beginner i this "field of science". Time for sending the paper to referees approx, April-01.

I am a professor in metallurgy since 1983 (metals forming) and have written written other kinds of articles outside my professional discipline( Fish for aquarium, "Tropheus" from the lake of Tanganyika in Africa)

So I am not a beginner in writing

2-0 out of 5 stars OUT OF DATE INFOMATION!!
This book has some good info if you dig really deep and know what you are looking for. It talks about things to do to your AG that are out of date, and could be bad to your birds health. It also speaks of taking the birds out of the jungle, which does not happen very much any more, if at all. If you want a good book about african greys, look at the copyright date, it says a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, BUT......
I found that there was a lot of good information in this book, HOWEVER,the author speaks about the bird being "captured from the jungle"and brought into a domestic situation.I CAN NOT stress how much that thisis the absolute WRONG way to obtain ANY bird. When purchasing AfricanGrey's (and any other animal for that matter) make absolute CERTAIN that itcame from a domesticated breeder, and NOT from the wilderness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best For a Parakeet Beginner
Best book for beginners! Info filled all the way!

4-0 out of 5 stars A slim,well-indexed guide that's great for quick answers
Our family has been living with parakeets for about four years now and we refer to this book on at least a weekly basis for answers to various questions about diet, socialization and behavior. It's very well-indexed--(E.g., Should your budgie have broccoli?Just look under"vegetables") -- which makes using the slim volume easy andproductive. It isn't very detailed or tremendously scientific, but for theaverage parakeet owner/lover, it's a good little book to keep under yourcage next to your millet spray!

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction!
If you've never owned a parakeet before, this might be the best place to start...lots of basic background information, will encourage you to read more about budgies and, if you haven't already, go out and buy one (orseveral!) 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid duck care book
This book would be very helpful to they inexperienced duck owner. However, I can't see it taking anyone beyond the basics, and if you own ducks at some point you will have to travel down that road. This book does give a lot of good information. It has everything from basic anatomy of the duck, to diet, housing and environmental concerns, duck behavior, raising ducks, a list on ornamental and domestic breeds, and most importantly it gives you the basics in an easy to understand format.

Having said all this this book has some weaknesses. It does not have a detailed breeds list (only a couple pages). This book does cover a lot of information in under a hundred pages, but it doesn't cover any one thing really well. I prefer Dave Holderreads book "Storey's Guide To Raising Ducks." I feel it is a superior book for both novices and experienced poultry personal. So why did I give this book 4 stars? Simply, this book does everything it can in under a hundred pages, it just doesn't do enough in my opinion. It would be a good book to start with, but you will eventually have to buy or get more information somewhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Duck Handbook
Owning a pet duck is a lot different than owning a dog or cat!
