4-0 out of 5 stars Good book...
I am new to Zebra Finches and needed some information on how to care for my new pets. The book did have quite a bit of good information. Just enough for me to get by. It seemed like it took forever to get the book. Longer than it needed. It was very affordable and arrived in good condition. Not sure I would order from this seller again because of the delayed shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Zebra Finch book !
I have purchased this book for my Business Fobex South Africa cc (Fish or Bird exports )and after reading and studing the whole book I had more then success with all the information I gained from all the wonderful topics. This book is a must for those who want to have a deeper knowledge of theZebra Finch. e-mailfobex@iafrica.com" and remember that any BarronBooks of the Pet Owners Manual is always a good buy "

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for beginners
This book has given me all the information I needed to help in raising my finches. I enjoy it and refer to it everyday.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best book for the new Zebra Finch owner.
In just a short 76 pages Hans-Jurgen Martin touches on all aspects of Zebra husbandry. The information goes somewhat beyond beginners' interest and includes an excellent introduction to genetics. The quality of photosin the book are excellent,I only wish these nice photos where dedicated tomore photos of the various varieties of Zebras instead of nests and typesof seed.I find it to be a valuable quick reference source and it sparksfurther interest in the care and breeding of Zebras. I would highlyrecommend it to anyone who keeps Zebra Finches. Kathy Dezern

An authoritative, avian-medical-reference text is a must-have for every responsible bird keeper, regardless if they simply share their home with a finch, a budgie, or another companion-parrot, or if they house and breed a flock of aviary birds. Dr. Michael J. Cannon has authored just such a text, A Guide to Basic Health and Disease in Birds (Revised Edition).

4-0 out of 5 stars good book to get you started
this is a good general information book.It will help you get started with your cockateils. It has been very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the "EXPERTS"
I read with interest the review from the "professional"cockatiel person. What seems to be a 'one star' for them happens to be veryuseful to all of us "non-professionals".

This book has helpedbeginners and that is what counts. Sometimes, the "experts" aredead wrong when it comes to the simpleness of a book helping the beginningcockatiel owner. This isn't bad, because most of us could give a hoot aboutgenetics and showing your cockatiel at contests.

Good book for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cockatiels, Cockatiels, Cockatiels!!
This book has everything you'd ever want to know about cockatiels.I 1stgot it as a Christmas present, about 3 months after I got my bird, a 16 wk.old, female Australian Gray. She is turning 3 in May of 1999.But thisbook helped me understand her and the way she lives.I wish to train herto speak very soon. The book gives methods on traing & taming of allsorts, a complete food guide & table of dangers, and 5 differentfloorplans for outdoor aviaries, plus ideas on how to create your own!! For me, it was a life-saver!!Also in the "The New......Handbook" series are "The new Dog Handbook" and "Thenew Paraket Handbook".Many others also are included, plus a seriesof un-revised books called "The... ...Handbook"This series hadmanymore species, eventhough "The New... ...Handbook"series isupdated, revised, more up-to-date and has all the newest information, ideasand theories from many different scientists.Use it!!

1-0 out of 5 stars An archaic collection of cockatiel information.
Having bred and raised cockatiels for 13 years, I can unequivocally statethat this book contains little or no helpful information about cockatiels. In fact, there is a great deal of misinformation. For example, the geneticssection contains incorrect information regarding the breeding of albinocockatiels, treating albino as if it were one gene instead of a combinationof lutino and whiteface.Another good example of Mr. Vriend's use ofarchaic information is that he recommends peat moss in the nestbox, whichcan cause fungal growth leading to aspergillosis, which is a serious lungdisease.

My recommendation:read a book written by someone who hasrecently bred cockatiels.

5-0 out of 5 stars great basic beginner's book!
I was interested in getting cockatiels as pets & picked up this book to learn more about these birds before I bought them. I found this book to be VERY informative & gave me plenty of knowledge about these birds & led me to buy them.I keep refering back to this book almost daily since I picked up the birds a week ago. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, and attractively presented
This is a standard, well-done pet owner's guide for cockatoos, including scads of information on the increasingly-popular pet. I wish that the book took more of a stand against the capture of these beautiful animals from the wild, but sadly, it merely warns against the health threats of smuggled birds.

Once you're over the moral quandary of obtaining your bird in an ethical manner, the book provides all of the information you could hope for. It not only gives you the basics of feeding and housing, but also has sections on breeding your cockatoo, and on understanding your cockatoo's verbal and physical cues.

The drawings are well-done, and many of the color photographs are simply gorgeous.

If you're considering getting a cockatoo as a first-time owner, I urge you to read this book cover-to-cover before you commit to getting your bird, as they have long life spans and are quite high-maintenance in some ways, and you should know what you're getting yourself into. Also, please support a local breeder rather than paying for the taking of these beautiful animals from their natural habitat.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cockatoos
This book is no longer usefull. The info. is quite out dated foe example the author tells you that cockatoos need ONLY a seed diet. This was so 20 years ago. Pellets have been proven to be the diet with seeds (if fed) should be 10% of the daily diet. He does say feed fresh veggies, fruits etc. Also you are told about importing birds. This is against the law & has been so for YEARS.Not very much info. most info is only a few lines.under usefull literature & addresses he gives you names & addresses of magazines that are no longer in business. Over all the book is not worth the ink to print it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cockatoo Book Out There!
I gave this book 5 stars because it was very susccinct and informative.

3-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD
This book was OKAY. It didn't really talk much about how big they can get etc. Also, half of the book talked only about bredding which IS NOT the reason I bought it. I wanted general information on just SINGLE cockatoosnot pairs!

4-0 out of 5 stars simple but to the point
Upon reading this book, I found it to be a little too short in the areas I'm interested in. I've been breeding birds and taking in neglected birds which is one of the reasons I purchased this book. It is okay for someonewanting general information.( The pictures are nice to look at, says myson.) This is not to be used as a "bible". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
I absolutely love this book.I work with parrots on a full time basis in an all-bird store. This book is right on target for beginnner bird owners. What I like about it is that it is comprehensive. It breaks down the different types of birds and discusses their personality traits, size, life span, talking ability (not a definite in any bird, but always a plus, and every bird is different), whether a bird is ok for an apartment or a house, and of course, everything from health and grooming to training.I have not found a book yet that does as much comparing between the species and makes it easy for beginner birders.A must have for all beginners!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Info on Bird Selection, Care, and Training
This book is an up to date book providing a general overview of bird care and training. This book is good for the beginner who is considering a bird or has just acquired their first bird. It is reasonably priced and packed with lots of information. You'll need to move on to more specialized books about bird care and training after reading this, but this book is an excellent start!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice in an easy to use format.

1-0 out of 5 stars Psittacosis and its transmission to humans barely noted
When I bought my cockatiel, I also bought several books. This book has nice pictures, and mentions care of the birds, but misses the entire point of diseases in cockatiels. Its explainations of the bird disease and its transmission to humans is so limited and glossed over as to make it appear silly to worry about any possible trasmission. The book should have explained that ANYONE who owns a bird should be aware that the disease psittacosis (ornithosis) is very contagious, carried air born by dried fecal material,"bird dust", and through saliva (such as kissing and sharing crackers).Keeping a new bird in a romm that might serve as a guest room is dangerous if the bird has the disease.Transmission to humans results in a "sudden high fever" 103+ degrees and usually no other symptoms evident at first.A few days later a cough may develop and pneumonia will develop which can and did cause systemic failure rapidly. How do I know?Well, my father died of a pneumonia diagnosed as caused by psittacosis after a short illness after staying in my guest room/family room. This book, which I bought shortly after I bought the bird does little to mention the symptoms or the DANGER or even suggest that if YOU or ANYONE in your family becomes ill after purchasing a new bird/cockatiel to tell your doctor that you have a newly purchased bird. The bird does not need to show any symptoms to carry the disease and any bird can carry it.The bacteria, if contracted, always results in pneumonia but is easily cured IF RECOGNIZED. I read the book cover to cover.IF the book had mentioned this disease and its affect on people, I would have had the information to report to his doctors and perhaps, he would have survived. The book, in my opinion, failed to provide me with necessary and important information. Finally, I would recommend reading a book called, "Cockatiels A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" which does at least carry a warning to pet owners. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Conures: Everything about Purchasing, etc....
This book is to helpful in your curiosity about the kinds of conures there are & how to house them but hardly any info. is given on how to understand they're personality or on their habits & how to explore themfurther.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete information for conures just as pets
This book is a good source for those who are looking for information on basic care and breeding of conures. However, it gives little information on keeping Conures as pets. There are almost no training tips given.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great information source for keeping companion birds.
This is not of great value to the average companion bird owner. It is geared mainly to the individual interested in breeding and setting up a breeding avaiary. There is very scant info on personality andcharacteristics. As most info is for breeding purposes, all cage and carerequirements are written for at least 2 birds. Almost all info is providedconcerning wild caught, or nearly adult-parent reared offspring. As it isso easy to locate a good breeder that hand rears young, this is of littleuse. This book did not meet my needs, but would be useful to a perspectivebreeder of Sun Conures.

3-0 out of 5 stars My Review
This book is great for those who have just purchased their new conure. There are beautiful illustrations and many colored photos. But the book is mostly about breeding and it contained words that weren't really clear. Itshould have had more tips on training the bird. But other than those, iwould say that it would be a good book to buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photos excellent. Not geared for the pet bird owner.
I am a pet bird owner looking for info about behavior specfic to conures.I felt this book was primarily adressing those who want to get into breeding of birds. The photos were excellent.I have a green eyed conure, she is delightful and while green, the edges of her feathers are rimmedwith a lighter green. She is beautiful and personable, contrary to thebook's opinion of this type of conure. ... Read more
