Product Description
This daring, intensely personal book challenges both conventional and feminist ideas about beauty by asking us to take pleasure in beauty without shame, and to see and feel the erotic in everyday life. Bringing together her varied experiences as a poet, art historian, bodybuilder, and noted performance artist, Joanna Frueh shows us how to move beyond society's equation of youth with beauty toward an aesthetic for the fully erotic human being.
A lush combination of autobiography, theory, photography, and poetry, this book continues to develop the ideas about the erotic, beauty, older women, sex, and pleasure that Frueh first addressed in Erotic Faculties. Monster/Beauty examines these issues using a provocative, often explicit, set of examples. Frueh admiringly looks at the bodies and mindsets of midlife female bodybuilders, rethinks the vampire, and revises our ideas about traditional models of beauty, such as Aphrodite. Above all, she boldly brings her personal experience into the text, weaving her reflections on female sensuality with contemporary theory.
These linked essays are as much a performance as they are a discussion, breaking down the barriers between the personal and the academic, and the erotic and the intellectual. Frueh writes passionately and beautifully, and the result is a much-needed exploration of beauty myths and taboos. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars gorgeous theory
Joanna Frueh's Monster/Beauty: Building the Body of Love waslife changing for me, and I literally shook with feeling as I read the introduction.I highly recommend this book.I have never read hotter theory! She engages with the theme of beauty not simply to critique or invert, but instead embraces, explodes, examines and burrows within the veins of beauty to open expose the term to a more complex arena.Among other things, the author convinces us that as our experience and understanding grow richer we become increasingly beautiful. ... Product Description
Ever since the fitness craze in the 1980’s, we have become a nation increasingly aware of our health and physique. Millions of dollars are spent every year in the quest for a perfect body. Gyms are big business, personal trainers are making a tidy living helping people stay fit, and body building supplements are at an all-time level of performance.
In actuality, the sport of body building has been around for quite some time. In the late 19th century, the man known as the “father of bodybuilding”, Eugen Sandow was credited with inventing the sport by inviting people to view his body in muscle display performances.
Sandow built a stage performance around displays of strength and agility as well as showing off a “Grecian” physique which was considered the ultimate body. He became so successful, he created several businesses around his fame and was among the first people to market body building products bearing his name. As he became more popular, he was credited with the invention of the first exercise equipment marketed to the masses.
Sandow was also credited with beginning the first body building contest called “The Great Competition” held in London. This competition was the basis for many others to follow including the Mr. Olympia competition that remains the most popular body building contest to date.
When World War II broke out, men in the country were inspired to become bigger in their physique, stronger, and more aggressive in their behavior. Training techniques were improved, nutrition was focused on more than ever, and body building equipment evolved into effective means for working muscles in ways never thought of before.
It was also around this time that many body building organizations came into being including the Amateur Athletic Union and the International Federation of Body Building. In 1970, body building was taken to a new level when the film “Pumping Iron” was released starring Austrian newcomer Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Through the years, body building has just grown in popularity becoming almost an obsession for many people. Women have started
to take an interest in honing their bodies, and the sport has evolved into a real competitive arena.
If you’ve always wanted to learn about how to build your body to that “Grecian Ideal” envisioned by Eugen Sandow, there can be a lot to learn. This book will guide you through some of the basics to get you started. Of course, nothing will compare to actually getting to the gym and lifting those weights, but you’ll need some information first.
That’s why we’re here. We want to reveal body building secrets to YOU.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but...
...I think I'll try the "HardBodies Express Workout".

Reason being is, ok -

The good about this book? The clear, concise directions; the very inspiring pictures; the very motivating introduction. The pictures that go with the instructions so there's no guesswork as to how to do the exercises.

The bad:
Some of the nutrition information is a little outdated. But, you can find up to date info on nutrition anywhere nowadays.

The routine: each muscle is worked (except for inner and outer thighs, unless you work out of the 'fine tuning' chapter as well).Instructions are simple and clear. You start out gradually, but - is it really necessary to do 4 - 5 exercises PER muscle AND stack sets on top of it?You'd be at the gym for hours! No one has that kind of time! Not to mention you'd be completely exhausted by the time you were done!

Don't get me wrong - I understand to get a good hard body, you need to work - but unless you're training for fitness competitions, it isn't necessary to do THAT much. You should be able to do just one or two exercises per muscle group2 or 3 times per week and see results.Or just have a schedule where you work one muscle group once per week THEN you could do this type of routine. But we are all different, to each their own.

Also - the exact same exercises are in Joyce Vedral's "Now or Never."Same program as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars My second copy!
This book is basic and clear, but extremely informative.I purchased it when it was released 20 years ago and somehow lost it over the years. Now back in the gym I thought it would be nice to have on my bookshelf again so I went to Amazon to re-purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute BEST Motivation!!
I got this book ten years ago, and have been weight training/bodybuildingever since. With assistance from this book, I found it was easier tochange my body (from size 18 pants to size 8) than my mind. The pep talkat the beginning of the book really changed my life.I feel much betterabout myself now. When people ask me how I keep at it, I recommend thisbook, and am buying yet another copy for a friend who's gotten a new gymmembership, to keep her motivated!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for beginning body builders
This book has done wonders for me.I started out not knowing anything about different exercises for weight training and how to start a program. Now I am working out at least 4-5 times a week and loving every minute of it.I saw results quickly and the pictures helped me understand how to do the exercises correctly. This is a must!!! I would love to see more books from the two lady authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informitive for the novice
This is a great book to learn different weight lifting exercises. The pictures show alot. The book could use more instruction on nutrition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good reading
I have tried so many diets. This gives me another way to look at it. It is worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Summation of the most accurate information available
Gary Null as summed up the most current and accurate information available about healthy eating and dieting. His book agrees with the numerous doctors and dietitioners recommendations that I have been priveleged to receive. If one is serious about being healthy, this book is a must.Read this one and you can forget the rest.

2-0 out of 5 stars okay but wait...
The goals of the book area laudable but I find it very frustrating to read. The diet directions are very general and scattered; they seem very unorganized.I found a lot of contradictory information such as a quote from a doctor saying it's impossible to loose more than a pond of fat in a week and then 2 or 3 pages later several testimonials as to how people lost more than 2 pounds of "weight" in a week (averaged)on Null's diet: well which is it?Also, he recommends eating with canola oil (a Frankenfood type product). There were other concerns but I do not have the book in front of me.He seems to make many claims without telling you why it is so.While reading the book I wondered if someone made a fake copy and I was reading it.I expected so much more from this book. However, overall I see it for the good it is trying to accomplish and still recommend the book: I just do not see it as very "solid" in instruction.Iwish it was better formatted as to how to do what he says.It basically recommends a vegetarian diet and more live foods (vegetable, fruits, sprouts, lentils) while cutting out dairy/wheat.I found the recipes to be very odd mixes.I got a few ideas from it but they are "weak as water" recipes. It is neat that he recommends getting a balance not only in the diet, but also in the home environment, emotional, physical, and spiritual.I may need to read it twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly The Ultimate Diet Book Out There By Far!
This book changed my life!I was overweight, undernourished, fatigued, and bringing myself closer to disease every day with my diet and lifestyle before I read this book. --- Lose weight without counting calories?Sounds carazy, but this book shows you how to do it and it works!!! -- It also has a ton of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even desserts that are super healthy, delicious and easy to prepare. There's also a whole section on juicing and all kinds of tasty juice recipes as well --- Buy this book and change your life!! It changed mine!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Null's Ultimate Lifetime Diet
I've been a vegetarian for a little over a year, but sometimes I need a little support in order to make my diet palatable, interesting, and new.I can get tired of eating the same things over and over again, and I know that is not good for my immune system. The Ultimate lifetime Diet has great suggestions for keeping mealtimes fresh and appetizing.

In addition to helping me keep my meals interesting, The Ultimate Lifetime Diet helps me when I feel tempted to stray from eating what is good for me, and it is also helpful in deciphering what certain junk food cravings might mean for me. There is a helpful section that is just about self empowerment, where I can figure out how I might be using food as a sublimation tool;this is where I substitute food for other areas in my life that I might feel lack. This section of the book really helps me keep on track in my 'off' days, when I'd rather eat pizza and drink lots of coffee, than take the time to really eat right. The questionnaire really helps me hone down to what's bothering me emotionally, so that I can deal with issues directly, and not hurt myself with food.

Since I've been eating right, I've gone from about 167 lbs at my heaviest, to about 135 right now. This is much better for my 5'6" frame.I feel much lighter, more energetic, and much more positive about my life.

Although I could be in better physical shape, I felt so good this year that I was actually able to train for and complete the New York City marathon.I know that I could not have done this without my new attitude that came about as a result of feeling better about my life, and maintaining my vegetarian diet, which has given me an abundance of energy.

I look forward to maintaining my current state of health, and creating an even better body, with the help of The Ultimate Lifetime Diet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahh,... the memories.Great book!
Ahhhh,... this book.I stumbled upon it by accident when looking for time travel. In a sense it was for me!I used to carry this book around until it fell apart. It was my manual as a teen at the gym.I remember it talked about having the right curves in the right spots and how that was superior to develop over the other types of body.It gave instructions on how to do that.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Incredible Hulk
I love the fact that she gives solutions on off-setting 'figure flaws' like thick ankles (yep, I've got cankles) and wide-waist (check). I hate that fact that she does, indeed, carry on about herself-and on and on... I'm all for self-esteem but this is definite absorption. Also, I find her huge man-like appearence in some of the photos to be unsettling. It's like a female Hulk-bulging biceps, wide and broad back, and at times, I felt all her chest was missing was a mass of curly hair. Not what most 'normal' women aspire to. I think the happy medium here is toned, muscled but still retaining curves (zero-fatigue ratio, is how I believe she refers to it). Seeing her bulked up is just the type of visual that deters women from lifting any concernable weight, whatsoever. Her extremely low recommendations of body fat % were also unfeasible (and dangerous). So to sum things up: be prepared for extreme self-importance on the author's part, manly muscles and some questionable health advice-just focus on the exercises themselves, and you should be on the right track to building that "Supervixen"-ish figure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Training for females
Best book on training for females hands down.Although I think the set total are unrealistic for the average trainer the techniques are awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth, Fully Illustrated and Fun To Read
I love this book. I have bought several muscle scultping books for women, and this is the most in depth by far.

I love how she made great jokes and stories in the book to keep readers amused and encouraged. Also the illustrations and photos are great!! I like how she tries to look cute and stylish while sqatting. Only a SUPERvixen could do that!

This book is the first only book to address my biggest issue. My lack of rear-end!!Through Supervixen, I am currently working on dveloping a beautiful, round curve from my flat butt.

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL RESULTS
This book is a great addition to women's weight training books.Even if you didn't follow her weight training recommendations, her discussion/celebration of ALL of the curves that make up a woman's body is inspiring and worth reading (rather than just rear end and breast curves - she goes into the calf curve, the lower back curve, etc.)It requires a balanced workout to achieve symmetry. She definitely speaks from a woman who KNOWS what she is doing. What I get from her is that she honors the female body. She also dispenses practical knowledge of how to increase those curves and zero in on trouble spots that we all struggle with - and also helps you determine what your body type is and what you need.Okay, here's an example of one of her million dollar secrets. She maintains that "saddlebags" generate from the quads, not from the butt, as I'd always thought. She recommends these grueling 6" foot placement full down squats as a remedy - I've been doing these for a month now, and bingo! This trouble spot I've been working on for 1-1/2 years is disappearing (thanks also to my increased cardio, 5x a week), and I'm developing great shape to my legs.I ran her concepts by my personal trainer/friend at my gym and he said, "Yep!It's all about the angles!"I can't believe the difference it makes, the simple foot placement on squats or leg presses, and it does change the exercise.ALSO - regarding her comments about men looking at her curves - I have a completely different take on this. She isn't flaunting herself, she is speaking lightly of the male instinct to follow curves with their eyes (I have curves, and I KNOW this happens - no ego necessary, it's just the way males are designed)- she's just discussing the power of symmetry, not how great she is.(Come on, ladies, don't you notice great symmetry on a man?I do!)She writes in a humorous, pull-no-punches style.I wouldn't recommend this book for a first beginner (try Body for Life for this). However, if you're looking to detail out, it's a great resource unlike any I've found. While I find the cover photo a bit daunting (very buff and pumped up, almost male-like physique - but that's cool, we can all look like we want to).....I love her curved look inside - definitely a strong and powerful woman.I didn't really use this book for her nutritional advice - much of her tips are common sense things, though I eat differently than her meal plans.A good addition to your weight training library, I believe Negrita shares more secrets than you'll get elsewhere. ...
