1-0 out of 5 stars OUTDATED INFORMATION - Dont buy this book!
I read this book and its from too long ago to help you. The information is very outdated and a lot of the rules it states no longer apply and have been completely changed. A better source of Savings Bond information, always up to date, www.SavingsBonds.com.

Again, unless you want to have to re-learn everything you know about bonds, dont buy this book!

Product Description

In 1991, Michael B. O'Higgins, one of the nation's top money managers, revolutionized the investment industry by asserting that investors could beat the pros 95 percent of the time by putting 100 percent of their money into the "dog" stocks of the Dow. His book, Beating the Dow, became a bestselling investment classic and spawned an industry of websites and mutual funds, elevating the theory to legendary status.

Now, with equities dangerously overvalued and stock prices at an all-time high, O'Higgins turns his attention to bonds, providing a proven system for achieving the lowest risk, highest returns in a chaotic stock market--requiring less than five minutes per year and helping you beat the pros 95 percent of the time, regardless of market conditions. Utilizing a simple, proven method for mastering the market by determining the best investment choices, Beating the Dow with Bonds evaluates companies and bond ratings, to help you achieve the highest risk-adjusted returns. For investors with as little as $5,000, Beating the Dow with Bonds provides a safer, more reliable opportunity to beat the Dow not just in today's market--but in any market.Amazon.com Review
Michael B. O'Higgins entered the stock-brokerage business inthe early 1970s, right on the verge of a rabid bear market. So hisskepticism about the continued rise in stock prices isunderstandable. At the same time, he notes that bond yields, as of the1999 publication date of this audiobook, are historically highrelative to inflation. Therefore, an investment portfolio combiningstocks and bonds, rather than stocks exclusively, should beat the DowJones Industrial Average in the future. Hiring A&E Network's JackPerkins, cohost of the acclaimed Biography series, to read thisaudiobook was a stroke of genius. Perkins's voice adds the heft oflifelong experience and hard-won wisdom to O'Higgins' rather dryexplanations of what bonds are and why you should invest inthem. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good INvesting Advice for Low Interest Rate Cycles
Zero coupon bonds are the bonds spoken of in the book's title. Zero coupon bonds do well in falling interest rate and stable, low interest rate investing environments as we had 90% of the time from 1982 to 2004. Now is NOT the time to use this book's advice, wait until interest rates fall again (2010??).
but it is true, by not owning any stocks O'Higgins outperformed the greatest -and longest- bull market in history.

1-0 out of 5 stars A sad waste of paper - babbling brooks are better
Having read many books on various financial subjects, this one is on my list as one of the top 10 wastes of time.In fact I am only writting this to hopefully save you time!Warning! When the reviews are from annonymous 'a reader' be suspicious!

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...but confusing
I agree with much of what has already been said as far as the amount of filler and the editorial glitches. And can anyone figure out the last chart -- table 11.1?These numbers make no sense and don't even correspond with the info on table 9.1.I began the book with some excitement but ended up feeling very uncertain about the method.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profitable, Pragmatic Advice for All Investment Scenarios
This is one of the few stock market books from the 1990s that will be read and appreciated many years from now. While silly stuff like "Dow 36,000" & Harry Dent quickly withers away, O'Higgins advice gains credibility every day in this apparently multi-year bear market. Several web sites (beartopia dot com & others) mention this book. Perhaps the book's title should have substituted "zero coupon bonds" for the word "bonds." Do look up the authors corrected list of investment steps here at Amazon, however, do not let the slightly sloppy editing deter you from learning this powerful investment advice. The more knowledgable one is of the market, the more one appreciates O'Higgins and his two works. This book's advice works in bull and bear markets.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good, but....
The book was not very well written, and why he felt the need to devote 70 pages describing in copious detail all 30 of the Dow stocks is beyond me. However, his 30 year zero-coupon analysis does have something going for it, and the inflation rate is a good predictor for a change in asset allocation. ... Read more

Whatever your age, income or total assets, bonds belong in your portfolio.A symbol of security, bonds have long had a place in any well-rounded portfolio. As millions of baby boomers shift their focus from the lure of capital appreciation to the necessity of capital preservation, bonds are moving from a supporting role to the spotlight. Many individual investors, however, know precious little about them.Marilyn Cohen, one of the nation's best known columnists and commentators on the bond market, demystifies bond investing and offers a shopper's guide to finding great bond buys and a master blueprint for building a winning personal bond portfolio.Packed with facts, real-world examples, and savvy advice, The Bond Bible covers:

The right bonds-to-stocks ratio for a sound portfolioHow to turn a bond investment from a safety net into a money-makerHow to identify a genuine bond bargainHow to determine which "store" gives the best value for different kinds of bondsThe pitfalls of the bond market and how to avoid themThe lowdown on bonds and taxesHow to know when to sell a bond and for the best priceThe scoop on the latest trends, including on-line bond investingAmazon.com Review
Fixed-income investments will never be as sexy as the day'shottest stock or a mutual fund focusing on the market sector dujour. But their very stability, combined with the equilibrium theyprovide when the Dow and the NASDAQ start bouncing around like6-year-olds on a sugar high, are exactly why savvy investors count onthem to round out their portfolios. Marilyn Cohen's The BondBible offers an unambiguous look at this once-arcane world,which--like much relating to investing--has become considerably lessmysterious and immeasurably more accessible with the advent of theInternet. Cohen, president of a capital management firm, fullyexplains everything from income streams and the Treasury yield curveto the pluses of federal agency bonds and the negatives of high-yieldissues. In simple terms, she also addresses advanced strategies suchas leveraging, credit rating agencies, and insurance, bond funds andunit trusts, and nontraditional vehicles such as those tied to rock &roll royalties. Exactly how much of your portfolio should be devotedto bonds is a personal choice based on individual circumstances. Onceyou determine that, however, this book will help you reach an informeddecision on what to buy, where to obtain it, and how to manage whatyou've got. --Howard Rothman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bond Bible
With all the money flowing into bonds and bond mutual funds these days, The Bond Bible makes for an essential read on the basics or bonds. Marilyn Cohen's book will help all bond investors "know what they own".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book n the basics of bonds
This is a great little book no the basics of bonds and the bond market and it's an interesting and easy read to boot.Bond trading has been around a long time and it has it's own language of technical terms and insider expressions that just don't make a lot of sense to the layperson. The author understands this and explains these terms and this market in a very straight forward manner. This is an excellent first book to read on bonds.I made the mistake of jumping to this topic by first reading more complex, esoteric books and found myself rather confused. After reading this book, I get the basics and can now go on to learn more. The only down side is that this book was written in 2000 and there have been monumental changes in the finance world since then.I encourage the author to update this excellent text to incorporate these changes, however the book is quite valuable as is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to bonds
Marilyn Cohen is a delightful writer. Her passion and true desire to enlighthen and educate her readers comes through her prose. The Bond Bible gives you an overview of bonds and how to go about investing in them. It was published in 2000 so in some ways it is outdated. The fundamentals of bond investing has not changed though and as a novice bond investor there is plenty to learn here.

On page 6 there was a paragraph that almost made me quit this book. Perhaps I misunderstood what she said. Here is the quote:
" In the stock market, there is a wide range of merchandise available to you at different prices. Buying a share of Microsoft will obviously cost you more than buying a share of Starbucks, because it is expected that Microsoft will make more money selling its software than Starbucks will with double espressos."

This is an egregious statement.I wondered how a bond expert could make such a statement. Would it reflect the rest of the book? This book is bonds - not stocks, but fundamental analysis is invaluable when analyzing any security. The statement above hinted that the author was very confused about valuing equities. Fortunately, it did not reflect the quality of the rest of the book. This was an anomaly and throughout the book I thought her advice was sound and well thought out. Overall, I highly recommend this book to any reader who is interested in learning about bonds.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bond Bible
Very good book on bonds - easy to understand but packed full of information.Would highly recommend this book for someone looking at investing in bonds

3-0 out of 5 stars How to Sell this Book
If you search Google for "When to Sell a Bond", the only book that comes up is this one, so I bought it. Unfortunately, it really does not describe this at all, only to sell when "Things Go Bad" or "there has been a good run-up"...so I plan to re-sell this book... otherwise if your looking for basic bond concepts and ideas this book is okay. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Look for it on the internet
I just did an internet search for this book and I found a pdf copy within 5 minutes.I searched for this book because I own a hardback copy of Klarman's book and I have been thinking about selling it.But I decided to search for it on the internet to determine if it was even worth selling. After all, if people can find it for free, then I would prefer to keep my copy. This book is definitely worth reading, especially if you are new to investing. But for whatever it's worth, I advise you to spend your $1,000 on registering for the CFA Level 1 exam and study for that instead, assuming you want to learn fundamental analysis.Alternatively, subscribe to Grant's Interest Observer. This is a valuable book with many nuggets of wisdom, but be a value investor and find it for a cheap price or find it for free.I apologize to the book sellers for revealing this information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Margin of....What?! This book costs over $1000
Does this book give oral?Nope. So save yourself your hard-earned cash; and if you call yourself a value investor after buying this book, shame on you.Unless you want it just to say you paid over $1000 for it, or for art, I guess, then you'd be better off investing the money in other value investing books and pocketing what's left.As far as the literature is concerned, it is a good book, compared to other value investing books. Not the best though, and surely not worth paying that ridiculous amount for."I paid $1000 for this book! Now, I'm a true value investor!Time to go invest in Apple!"

5-0 out of 5 stars You can get this Free
This book is pretty good. However the prices here are crazy.

True value investors would do a quick search and find the free pdf version available online.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Investment Book You'll Ever Read
I urge all my clients to read this book. Unlike most works on the art of investing, there is priceless wisdom on virtually every page. If you are a fulltime professional investor, you must read this book (few have, apparently). If you are an individual investor trying to make an intelligent decision on how to invest your funds, this is the most important book on investing you will ever read. [This review was written by the President of RHD Capital Management.]

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid book, but NOT WORTH HUNDREDS OF $$$$
Bottom line: Klarman wrote a solid book on value investing that is worth reading, IF you can find it in your library for free or pick it up for $20.IT IS NOT WORTH HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS.

This book does NOT contain any secrets that will give you an investing edge (which is the reason I would assume the price is so high - right?).You can learn the same things from the more reasonably priced value investing books on the market.I would suggest to use the hundreds you would spend on this for dozens of other books, maybe a journal subscription, or invest the money (probably the best idea). It's a real shame they haven't republished this book though, because like I said, it's worth normal book prices (i.e. $20 bucks or so).

To give a little more insight into the book, Klarman has written a similar book as The Intelligent Investor. He starts by discussing the difference between speculators and investors, then the mental framework one must have to properly apply value investing, the general investing philosophy, and then going into the investment process.Due to it's length of 243 pages, it is not a textbook on the material. It is a great introductory to amateur read for value investing, though even professionals may enjoy the read and even take something away from it.But if you're thinking about reading this and have not read The Intelligent Investor, go read that instead and forget about this one. ...
