4-0 out of 5 stars Indoor Bonsai for Beginners
An excellent book for beginners.I especially liked the description given to different plants; as it indoor position, care, and training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
This is a very good book for those just starting with the art of bonsai. The text is clear and concise.Photos are clear and beautiful.Instructions and illustrations are presented in an easy to follow manner. There is even a section in the back of the back (an A to Z of species)that describes the level of expertise needed for each species of plant so you can begin with a level you can handle.

I would highly recommend this book, even to someone more advanced.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indoor Bonsai For Beginners
I was looking for an instructional book on Bonsai. As I am a total beginner, I did not find this book useful for step by step instruction. However, if I was past this initial stage of beginner, it is useful for care advice on specific plants.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the wrong title.
The title to this book might suggest that it is a practical guide to technique.Only the last 13 pages, however, are actually about technique. The first 94 pages explore each of the major bonsai styles, with careful attention being given to design considerations based on comparisons to trees in nature. As such, the book is less about "keeping" your bonsai perfectly shaped as it is about planning for its shape in the first place.

My more serious criticism about this book is that the photographs (especially the author's nature shots) are small and, in some cases poorly reproduced.I found it frequently difficult to convince myself that I could see what the author wanted me to see. Many of the photographs are not referenced in the text, and some of the references appear to be wrong.

All in all, however, it is a good book value and provides a detailed examination of bonsai styling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Design Strategies
This book focuses on design strategies for bonsai enthusiasts. It is a wonderful, brief read.Photographs of natural-setting trees were poor, however, especially printed as they are in very small format.Photos ofprivate bonsai trees were excellent.A good place to start for strategy indesign.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for "General Knowledg", but lacking in content
I found this book to fair well in the category of "General Knowledge", but thought it needed a little more content.I now know all the different styles and basic wiring techniques but fail to find manyof the pitfalls to training in some of the harsher styles.

I wouldrecommend this book to anyone who is a novice and lacks general knowledge, but would warn that there is much more to learn before attempting to traina bonsai tree. ... Read more

Product Description
"Bonsai" in the original Chinese and Japanese means "plant in a container". In western usage this has come to mean a tree grown in a container, conforming in all respects to a normal tree except for its miniature size. The cultivation of bonsai depends on careful selection of suitable specimens, skillful root pruning and potting and regular attention thereafter. This concise, illustrated handbook is an invaluable reference tool for both amateur gardeners and experienced growers alike. The straightforward approach to essential techniques, together with advice on tackling pests and other problems and the directory of recommended species will ensure successful results. ...
