3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing ending
While this book, in all it's earlier chapters does an excellent job of explaining the full mental, emotional and psychological make-up of someone suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder I was hugely disappointed and more than a bit let down towards the end when I read "Research has found no psychopharmacological agent to be superior to another for the broad spectrum of BPD symtoms. Clinicians have found these medications most effective for acute symptoms. MEDICATIONS GENERALLY SHOW LIMITED EFFICACY WHEN USED FOR MAINTENANCE."

It seems that the general, underlying advice which this author gives is one of communal support groups or finding therapists who have the necessary knowledge of dealing with BPD.

For those unfortunate people out there who know that they do have BPD but who either cannot afford a suitable therapist or who do not have themeans of joining up with BPD support groups (due to distances involved or other insurmountable difficulities)- one feels let down after finally discovering the diagnosis as to what exactly ails you.

A short section regarding available and used medications for BPD is discussed, together with their side effects too, but other than that - anyone who suffers from BPD will not get full guidance just how they can go about learning to deal with this most incapacitating illness.

If you are looking for answers as to how to deal with your illness - this book sadly falls flat towards the end...

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book. Found it very useful and informative.
The book is very clear and to-the-point. It provides very important information without going too much into useless details (like silly dramatic stories of very extreme cases I read in many other books that donot apply to me) Each chapter has a very clear, consise summaryand repeatsdefinitions used in the text. What I found most useful is that the authorprovides comparison of different therapies available to-date based onscientific research, not her opinion allowing me to make my own choice.Having read this book, I know that my next step should be looking for DBTtherapy with emphasis on cognitive schema-based approach. I also, found outthat I should avoid not-so-helpful supportive therapy used with otherdisorders. The only drawback of this book, is that the author did notprovide information of how to access appropriate therapies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive overview of current thinking on BPD
This book is the one I finally bought for myself out of all the current books on the subject. It successfully walks a fine line between being too overly "popular" in nature to be useful and too achademiclyoriented to be readable. At 400 pages it is not a casual read. Be ready foroccasionally dense and often contrary insights from most of the "bigthinkers" in the field. Perhaps not the first book you should buy onthis subject but a highly recomended next step for any person desiring toextend their knowledge beyond the level of what is in the generallyrecomended popular books on this still mysterious subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars I was hoping for an authoritative account of BPD
This book is probably a good introduction to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) for someone who is first reading about this disorder.Personally, I was looking for something a little more rigorous andauthoritative. The author admits to having no special expertise in thesubject, but has interviewed experts and others to arrive at herunderstanding of BPD.If you're looking for a top-notch, clear andunderstandable discussion of BPD, I would recommend Marsha Linehan's"Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline PersonalityDisorder." It offers an expertly written account by someone who isactively treating borderline patients and is on the cutting edge of thecurrent scientific research on BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Comprehensive Book
I am the webowner of "Borderline Personality Disorder Today." This book has everything you always wanted to know about borderline personality disorder regarding the basics of the BPD in this book. Includes different views of etiology and treatment. Discusses what the person with BPD experiences. Very informative for folks with BPD, families and clinicians. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BPDs best friend.
Having been diagnosed with BPD, I found this book helpful in many ways.It helped me to see what other's were seeing in my actions. It helped me know that I "wasn't crazy."It helped me to see how I could help those near me to help and understand me, and my illness. For other's with this diagnosis, I do want to add that some of the testimonies can hit a little too close to home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mental Health Politics
While difficult to read at times, Ms. Cauwels portrays withdignity and humility the suffering of those with borderlinepersonality disorder. This suffering is accompanied by courageous striving of the ill to educate their environment to the whims of their disorder. The vagarities of the policies and politics of the DSM and the disdain of some "professionals" for the perspective of patients and writer alike is intriguing and dismaying.Highly recommended for patients (consumers), their families, and open-minded mental health professionals. ... Excerpt: Paranoid · SchizoidSchizotypal Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder defined in DSM-IV and described as a prolonged disturbance of personality function in a person (generally over the age of eighteen years, although it is also found in adolescents), characterized by depth and variability of moods. The disorder typically involves unusual levels of instability in mood; black and white thinking, or splitting; chaotic and unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image, identity, and behavior; as well as a disturbance in the individual's sense of self. In extreme cases, this disturbance in the sense of self can lead to periods of dissociation. These disturbances can have a pervasive negative impact on many or all of the psychosocial facets of life. This includes difficulties maintaining relationships in work, home, and social settings. Self-harming is a marked symptom and even attempts at or suicide itself are possible, especially without proper care and effective therapy. There is an ongoing debate among clinicians and patients worldwide about terminology and the use of the word borderline, and s...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=149223 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most helpful, proactice book on BPD!
By far the most helpful, pro-active book and infomation on BPD I've yet to come across. At first I was skeptical about this book, I think it would just be a lot of hippie jargon from reading the website, but as I read on I was pleasently surprised!Paxton's book, unlike any of the other BPD books out there, actually gives concrete, simple advice on how to deal with the painful, daily struggles of Borderline Personality Disorder. She doesn't merely inform the readers about the disorder, but instead also gives solid, helpful, and very intuitive advice on how to get over BPD.Anouther great and very powerful aspect of this book is the hope Paxton gives to those living with BPD actions.Paxton suggest the the same energy used to destroy with BPD, can be channeled in a different diretion that leads to not only recovery, but creative, active happiness.I really think if you are looking for a book on BPD, this is the only one to buy at this point in time-as not much is really known on how to effectively treat this disorder. All of the other books on the topic just seem to touch the surface of what Laura Paxton acually understands and has changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thumbs up and a good helper book for BPD clients
For those just starting to accept the BPD self and are willing to take responsibility for moving towards wellness, this book is definitely one to keep close by.I have personally found it a self-soothing tool, even before I started attending a DBT - based therapy group. The simply presented, easy to understand exercises, along with the mid-level BPD information and positive affirmations from the author make this book a nice stand-alone for those frustrating nights when you need a gentle reminder, or as an adjunct to DBT.Definitely worth the modest investment. There is also a workbook available separately that can be helpful as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Book?
While it is possible to find information that I have not found in other publications, and while it is very helpful since it apparently was written by someone who has been through all this, calling it a "book" is just a little misleading. It has been published with a plastic spiral, no harder covers or nylon for the endsheets, there are pages to fill in that have been reprinted as many as 30 times (the journal page for example) with statements such as e "Bare your soul" with four lines to do it in...

3-0 out of 5 stars Borderline and Beyond - Somewhat Helpful, But...
I ordered this workbook after having read the glowing reviews for it here at Amazon. If you've been looking for books on BPD, you realize how few there are, and even fewer that offer concrete suggestions and exercises. After reading through the workbook, however, I was very disappointed in the amount of actual information in it. Without counting the exact number of pages, I would estimate that a good 2/3 of the book is filled with copy after copy of worksheets to fill out. In my opinion this book would have been far more helpful if it had been filled with information and the reader was given the opportunity to make their own copies of worksheets. Also, it is not a "book" but rather a stack of paper copies bound with a plastic ring. While I believe that every piece of information available about BPD is useful, I was disappointed in the amount of information relative to the cost of this workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings grounding in an unstable life!
Having suffered with this disorder for so many years I am always on the look out for new information and ideas. Borderline and Beyond, is filled with refreshingly simple ideas to help the Borderline ground him/herself during episodes. The book is set up in a way that readers can implement the ideas both during a crisis as well as on an everyday basis in our journey to healing. Paxton has writen words that touch at the very core of our lives, but doesnt just leave the reader saying "yeah thats how I feel", she gives follow-up work so we can learn to cope with those feelings and move towards healing. Paxton is quick to point out that the book is not to stand on its own but rather goes hand in hand with psycotherapy, a reminder for both the borderline and the therapist. This is a wonderful book. ... Read more

Product Description
Dr. Gerald Faris, clinical psychologist, lecturer and former assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine and Dr. Ralph Faris, professor of sociology and Director of the Honors Program at the College of Philadelphia explain their findings about the lives of two icons of 1960s music and how each suffered from a little known, complicated condition now clinically defined as “borderline personality disorder.” Living in the Dead Zone: Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison -Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder describes the torment of these two personalities–Joplin, the top female blues artist and Morrison, the influential rocker and lead singer of The Doors.

The most captivating aspects of the book are the simulated psychotherapy sessions between Janis and then Jim, and an experienced, psychoanalytic psychotherapist. The sessions are riveting and reveal the devastating and relentless nature of the disorder. To those who are irresistibly drawn to the powerful music of these two personalities, Living in the Dead Zone provides insights into their behaviors that are both accessible and provocative. The authors have presented an account of the two performers that has broader applications to the many in our society who suffer from a borderline condition.

This book is designed to increase public awareness of the disorder and to assist mental health workers to recognize patients so afflicted.Living in the Dead Zone may also help readers distinguish between the social and the psychological, between cultural trends allowing for easy acceptance of individual idiosyncrasies and the common recognition of emotional imbalance.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
A very enlightening book, I wish I would have known about it years ago.Very helpful for figuring out that all our problems wasn't all my fault.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Book That Helped Me So Much
I can't express how much this book means to me.Life is so frustrating when you care about somoene with borderline personality disorder, but you feel so alone because there is noone to share your experiences with.Literally, the things the person with BPD does are so outlandish and unbelievable that when you tell someone about it, you come out looking like the crazy person that is elaborating. So I was truly in a deep pit of depression and feeling alone until I picked up this book.Immediately I let out a deep breath of air because it helped me understand that I wasn't alone in this struggle. With each page I turned I got a little stronger, and was able to face my situation that I felt so powerless against.
In regards to the book, it is a good mixture of the author's personal story of being married to a woman with BPD and lessons/suggestions of coping skills to build your own strength and self confidence.Ozzie Tinman's story is so touching and real because you see the emotional struggles, step-by-step, as he found himself in a blackhole of despire and not having anywhere to turn. The imagery that you get from reading his story is so strong I could see the scenes he was explaning, and I personally could connect with the pain he was experiencing.I had to put the book down multiple times because I found myself crying for him, and myself. But just when you begin to feel hopeless for the author a funny thing happens, you begin to see how through his struggles be is getting stronger and making empowering changes in his life.In a snap of a finger his story goes from the reader feeling pity for him, to them gaining a huge amount of respect for the empowerment he gains when things look the bleakest. And since the reader is connecting with the story of the author, the reader also finds themself feeling empowered. After the author tells his story, he breaks down the disorder of BPD in easy to grasp concepts and real life examples. He also tells about pitfalls to avoid, ways to cope with the emotional beating you have taken, and dedicates a large portion of the book to helping the reader regain their empowerment over their life. The lessons are very down to earth and the reading is easy.I could write forever about how great this book is.
I read One Way Ticket not quite knowing what to expect. It had been recommended to me through my domestic violence support group and I figured it would be another boring read that I would put down after the first 20 pages. But I ended up reading the whole book in 2 days. Then I read it again! It was so much more than I expected and helped me improve my life so much.I now keep it close to me and read it when I need a little refresher of the lessons in the book. The chapters are broken down in easy to follow formats and you can reference back to sections easily.
In the book the author does end up leaving his wife, but that is clearly not the point of the book.It is about empowerment and that the reader has far many more options than they think they do to regain control over their life.I have read a review or two that say the book is simply a justification of leaving a BPD relationship, and encourages the reader does the same.I must address this because this is a true mischaracterization of what the author wrote, and he even includes an entire section of the book that explains that simply leaving is not an instant answer. He also takes a clear stance that the decision to leave or stay is the readers decision, and the readers decision alone. So if someone claims this is a manual about how to leave a BPD relationship, it simply is not true, and I would venture to say either that person didn't really read the book or completely missed the point of all of the lessons of the book.
I could write so much more, but I think you get the point that I absolutely loved One Way Ticket To Kansas.I would give it 10 stars if I could and reading it has honestly changed my life in a positive way.The lessons are so easy to integrate into your life and the author's story is so powerful and empowering to the reader. It gives hope.It helps you see that brighter days are ahead and that you are not stuck into the blackhole that led to you looking for help (the book).I would hope that someday I can meet Ozzie Tinman to tell him personally, "Thank you for writing this book."

2-0 out of 5 stars Respectfully Disagreeing
I was disappointed after reading through this book.I think my main frustration is the author's use of labels throughout.Of course labels simplify, but I was hoping for a more compassionate and complex look into the struggles of all the people involved with Borderline Personality Disorder... instead this tends to reduce everyone to either an "Ozzie" (someone in a relationship with a person who has been diagnosed with BPD) or a "BPD."And that, to me, seems to be "splitting" the population in half - and the us vs. them is symptomatic of a larger attitude problem.

People who have been abused by those suffering from severe BPD need trusted friends, a safe place, courage, and truth about themselves and others that will set them free.If you find yourself in this difficult place, pursue your own health and the health of those you love, but do not get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a NON BPD's must read
A great read for the NON BPD, this is dead on and has allot of great tools.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a what-to-do.
Well written easy read. The ideas of the "Stop walking on eggshell" e.g. "it is not your problem" but explained to the lay man in a practical way.A four stars because in my opinion it is bias to the "leave" scenario: the author solution, but the simple outlines can be reinterpreted to "leave the situation" without getting sucked-in.
For the one that leaves read: "A Promise to Ourselves" of Alec Baldwin: hold tight.
The "One Way Ticket" book will nevertheless give you more than just a glimpse of sanity: thank you Ozzie_Tinman. ... Read more

Product Description

Within the field of clinical psychology, the term borderline personality disorder was developed to fulfill a diagnostic need and has come to possess specific stereotypes and negative meanings. Because the term borderline is an emotionally charged word, it can lead to a less-than-accurate view of the situation or patient being described, thus presenting a challenge to even the most experienced therapists and becoming one of the most complex disorders to treat.

Through the use of one case study, however, experts in borderline personality disorders have put this difficulty at ease. Applying a variety of modalities to identify treatment goals, including: selecting assessment tools, conceptualizing progression, pinpointing pitfalls, and developing techniques, diagnosing and treating BPD has created a more successful therapeutic result.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for clients!
I bought this for a client with Borderline Personality Disorder. It is a great little handbook to give out to clients so they can read, very quickly, about BPD and how it affects their lives. Of course the author being someone who has recovered from the negative affects of BPD is also a great way to get your clients motivated!Great buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the money
This "book" is more like a pamphlet. It looks like it was assembled in someones home. The information is ok, but I would recommend spending the money for a real book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big name for little book
I was disappointed by this book, or should I call it pamphlet. Yes, it does have some very good self-help suggestions and descriptions of the DSM-IV criteria. There is not much else to it. My copy is not even stapled together straight!
One good thing is though, I can carry it in my purse to help me sxplain what Borderline Personality Disorder is if I am discussing it with people who don't have a clue as to what this disorder entails.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point
At first I thought "how could there be any helpful information in a booklet this small?"
Don't let the size fool you! Tami's been there and fills the pages with concrete, thought-filled, and beneficial insights and tools for anybody with traits of BPD. It puts the power tools of recovery in the hands of the one who wants to be better (but doesn't take the place of therapy or medicinal intervention, by any means). She offers "nuts and bolts" activities and new ways of thinking that empower the BP. Something I can pick up several times for a check up. Great supportive tool written by someone who has been there. ... Read more

My Enemy, Myself is a personal journey through the recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder, depression and Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome. Told with a balance of poetry and prose, the author recalls her journey through chaos, realization, therapy, and recovery. Whether you have been through similar trauma in your life or know someone who has, My Enemy, Myself was written for the reader to identify with the emotions, thought patterns, and self-actualizations. 5-0 out of 5 stars True inspiration
Meri Kennedy is a true inspiration to us all.The way she describes her childhood and all the trauma is phenomenal. She is a gifted writer. Each one of her poems was like an introduction to each chapter. Each chapter seemed to be a chapter of her life.Survivors need someone to turn to and this was a great book to turn to.I know many people will benefit from her book and become inspired themselves.I would encourage anyone to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL Book - It Should Be Made Into a Movie!
This is an absolutely phenomenal book. It's as suspenseful as the best of novels on the one hand, and it includes the author's poetry on the other. It is also a crime story told from the victim's perspective, and from that angle it's heartbreaking. The author was sexually assaulted by her own older brother, as sadistic and manipulative a creature as any found in the annals of literature, for many, many years, starting before she even started kindergarten. How the author, Meri Kennedy, was able to emerge from all of this is a triumph, and it makes for great reading too! There is a universality to this story whether the reader has ever experienced abuse or not. I've heard it said that evil can only exist in the darkness whenever someone sheds a light on evil, it's illuminated and stopped in its tracks. The fact that Ms. Kennedy had the guts to shine a light on the evil that she was forced to endure in her own home, while the unpunished perpetrator is still alive, is nothing short of amazing. It reminds me of all the sayings about how lotus flowers only get the chance to bloom after rising above the mud.I highly recommend this incredible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meri Kennedy's Book is Great - Her Same Abuser Had Threatened Me Too
I wanted to say just how relieved I was to read this book - if it is possible to be relieved by reading a book concerning the rape of a child - by Meri Kennedy. It was a relief to me, though, because at one time I knew one of Ms. Kennedy's abusers, and he threatened me, too -and later made up all kinds of mindless, ludicrous lies to try to cover himself and his hideous actions. The man is a rampaging sadist. It is with remarkable, stunning courage that Ms. Kennedy has sat down and written this book, and I applaud her efforts wholeheartedly. The more people can read and find out about the minds of the kinds of people like this decent, gutsy woman's abusers, the better. Thank you for writing this, Ms. Kennedy, and I wish all the very best to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
As a counselor for women that have experienced abuse, I am always in search of clarity and understanding for the serious problems that are often consequences of trauma. I found that reading this book has helped me approach the subject of borderline personality disorder and trauma due to child abuse with a greater and deeper understanding and by doing so, will help to empower those women that are working so strongly on their own persoanl growth.
I encourage professionals and anyone interested in learning to feel about this subject to read My Enemy, myself.
