Was a great book for research, but lacked photos that could have given the book more punch

5-0 out of 5 stars Emily Dickinson's Gardens: A Celebration of a Poet and Gardener
I am very pleased with the quality of the book.Other than a black marking on the back paper cover, the book is in new condition. It is a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Charming Gardening Companion
Ms. McDowell is a delightful writer. Her book on Emily Dickinson's Gardens kept me reassuring company this spring as I worried my way through my first seed growing experiments. I kept it next to my seed growing trays by my computer where I sat and worked everyday. Her conversational stylewas reassuring, informative and entertaining. Somehow her book managed to say the right thing at the moment when I needed to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Celebration Indeed!
The wonder of this book is that the author has done a fabulous job of conmbining biography, poetry and gardening into one terrific volume.

The descriptions of Dickinson's life are intimate and homey; reading it, you feel like you're spending a few hours with a friend.

And McDowell does a great job of helping us understand the role that gardening played in both Emily's life and her poetry by providing a lot of specific details that bring Emily and her home to life.

As a gardener myself, I was extremely impressed with McDowell's gardening knowledge. She's included a number of tips and techniques that will be useful to both novice and experienced gardeners.

Bottom line: this is just a wonderful book, and one that I'll be giving to many of my poetry and gardening friends. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great travel companion
The guide is clear, concise and easy to read; doesn't get into too much detail but provides enough to make traveling around Wisconsin fun. Great for people who like road trips and learning more about Wisconsin's many local points of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
Except for college and graduate school years,I've lived all of my life in Wisconsin. This volume illustrated how little I know about my own state with its wealth of museum opportunities. It has whet my own desire to visit more of these small and large museums. If you like culture, history and museums of various kinds, travel with this book and enjoy another part of Wisconsin's heritage. The auther has done a fine job of research.

I picked up a copy of this book from my local library today, hoping to plan a summer vacation using the information therein. It's going to be a tough read if the rest of the book is filled with as many spelling and grammar errors as I found on the first few pages!Hopefully, the actual content of the book will be useful enough to overshadow this.If Mr. Rajer releases a second edition, I hope he finds a new editor.

Product Description

Alpines, from Mountain to Garden is a refreshing new perspective on the many stunning plant species that make their home above the treeline. Where most guides to alpine plants have favored collecting and rare species, Richard Wilford offers a holistic approach that describes their discovery and introduction into cultivation and why these factors must be taken in to consideration when planting these mountain dwellers in your garden.

Organized geographically, Alpines, from Mountain to Garden covers the conditions—drainage, climate, light levels, temperature, and precipitation—and species native to each of nine regions, including the United States and Canada, South America, China, Europe, and Africa.  In all, over three hundred plants are described and prolifically illustrated. Additional chapters cover cultivation, conservation, and the impact of indiscriminate collecting on the many species that are now on the verge of extinction. With its wealth of insight into where alpine plants come from and how this affects their cultivation, this new book from the Kew’s Botanical Magazine Monograph series is sure to be a hit with gardeners, collectors, travelers, and photographers alike.

Excerpt: San Antonio Japanese Tea Gardens -The San Antonio Japanese Tea Gardens (also known as the Sunken Gardens) in the U.S. state of Texas were developed on land donated to the city in 1899 by George W. Brackenridge, president of the San Antonio Water Works Company. The ground was first broken around 1840 by German masons, who used the readily accessible limestone to supply the construction market. Many San Antonio buildings, including the Menger Hotel, were built with the stone from this quarry on the Rock Quarry Road. In 1880 the Alamo Cement Company was incorporated and produced cement for 26 years in the kiln, the chimney of which still stands today. Supporting the workforce of the quarry was a small "village", populated primarily by Mexican-Americans who worked the site. They and their families became popular with tourists, who purchased pottery, hand woven baskets, and food. Product Description
Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are pioneers in the use of photography in plant illustration. The Botanical Garden I and II, are exciting and thoroughly modern renditions of illustrated botany books. Ten years in the making, this set combines the finest in photography with up-to-date, expert commentary to bridge the gap between gardener-friendly books and scientific texts. In the tradition of the great botanical illustrations, each featured plant has been carefully photographed -- as a whole and in its parts -- against a white background to reveal the plant's physical characteristics in exacting detail.

Plants from more than 1,200 distinct groups are described -- from oaks to violets and water lilies to grasses -- and are presented in evolutionary order, from the most primitive to the most advanced. Each plant listing includes:
- Name: genus, species and common names, date of discovery, and range.
- Description: detailed and concise in the scientific style.
- Key Recognition Features.
- Ecology and Geography.
- Comment: cultivation needs plus notes about unusual hybrids or developments in the genus.

As a pair, the two volumes are an all-inclusive source of information and photographs of more than 2,000 genera of temperate plants. Thorough introductory text encompasses numerous themes in botany, from the history of plant development to current DNA studies that are revolutionizing plant classification. Each volume includes a detailed index and bibliography. The Botanical Garden I and II are exciting additions to a gardening bookshelf. They are visually rich and highly accurate references that will remain interesting, useful and current for many years. Offering a discerning insight into the relationship between garden plants and their natural environments and accuracy that is unequalled outside scientific circles, this duo are truly the modern heirs to a long history of botanical references. There are simply no other works of this kind available today.

About Volume II, Perennials and Annuals

The second in the two volumes of The Botanical Garden, this illustrated reference covers 515 genera of herbaceous temperate plants, including annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs and aquatic plants. All are described in complete detail, including how plants are related and their origins and uses. Previously imprecise classifications are corrected. Listings are organized in evolutionary order, from the ancient plants -- sphagnum moss and ferns -- to the modern irises, hostas and sedges. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR SCIENTISTS, GARDENERS, ARTISTS, AND CHILDREN
This is great for botanist and gardeners. I am a botanist and will say that these pictures are worth a thousand and one words. It is faster to look though this book than search the web, when you are trying to remembera flower because the images are so clear and vivid. They are arranged by scientific families and there is a glossary of common and scientific names.

The book is VERY heavy and the pages are glossy (got for free super saver shipping!). It is necessary that this book be hardback, because it will be used. I have artist friends that have borrowed it to sketch from. Friends have looked though it to get ideas for planting flowers and researching native blooms. I wish I had had this book as a child, because I loved plants then too!

Be sure to get the set(book on shrubs too). If you buy the set, instead of one at a time, the books come in a box. I purchased my set in the box while working at the New York Botanical. This box helps protect the spines and hold these huge books upright.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a cheap book, but it is worth the money for plant I.D.
A little awkward to navigate, I would prefer Botanical alphabetical order...you definitely will be going to the index a lot.I would also like to see more specific information on the plant's preferred environment and zones.Excellent illustrations; great for plant I.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Botanical Reference.
I have seen an early copy of this book through a friend, and I can honestly say it is the best botanical reference book that i have ever seen.

The Pictures are brillient, with the plants seeming to come alive from the page. The authors- Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are two of the most respected authors and have a welth of experience that they are egar to share with you.

My Advice- PreOrder this book before the Christmas Season rust to advoide dissapointment. ... Read more

I was very disappointed in this book. It is merely what we call a "Coffee Table Book".There are very few facts/history, but many photos. If I want photos of the Garden, I can take them with my own camera.I was very impressed with Knowledge, Truth and Service by Harry Dunkak, Ph.D.This was a well researched and well written history of the Garden, a history of botanical gardens back to the Ancient Egyptians, and the story of the Bronx River Area.If you want history I would not recommend the book, The New York Botanical Garden by various authors.Instead, read Dunkak's history.

Product Description
Neotropical lowland rain forests have received much attention in the last decade, particularly in the debate concerning biological diversity. The lowland forests have been mentioned over and over again as examples of the genetic richness of the tropical forests, and it is true that in small sample plots of, for instance, one hectare of lowland rain forest, the number of species is enormous. Lately, however, it has become increasingly clear, that the high alpha-diversity of lowland tropical rain forests is not accompanied by an equally high beta- and gamma-diversity. Montane forests, on the other hand, have been known for their richness, but when estimating their alpha-diversity by traditional methods using quantitative inventories of trees, their species richness does not equal that of lowland forests. Recent work that includes other life forms than trees, ie. epiphytes, climbers, shrubs and non-vascular plants, however, indicate that the alpha-diversity in many montane forests equals that of lowland forests. When studying the diversity patterns on slightly larger geographic scales, it has become evident that differences in species composition between localities in montane forests is tremendous - their beta- and gamma-diversities are high. It appears that, although they cover much smaller extensions than lowland rain forests, Montane forests are the homes of the better part of the biological diversity of the neotropical countries. Discussions and attention relating to conservation has been equally skewed towards the lowland forests. Still, the montane forests are just as threatened by road construction, agriculture and cattle farming as the lowland forests are. Considering this lack of attention to montane forests, despite their importance for the biological diversity of the neotropics, it was appropriate to call for a symposium addressing these issues.Much knowledge obviously exists, but often in a scattered form, and it was the intention that a symposium could bring together researchers and others with interest in neotropical montane forests, biodiversity and conservation, to exchange ideas and knowledge, and to call attention to the importance of these ecosystems for the future of genetic resources of our planet. This volume contains a selection of abstracts from the 'Neotropical Montane Forests Symposium' held at the New York Botanical Garden from June 21-26, 1993. The purpose of the symposium is to document biological and ecological diversity in neotropical wet and moist Montane forests, and place it in the context with other neotropical areas. Emphasis is given to plants, with regards to taxonomic and ecological richness, threatened and conservation areas of high biodiversity and endemism, the evolution, diversity, speciation, distribution and biogeography of Andean-centred genera and families. ... Product Description
Other than the real thing, nothing is so splendidly beautiful as Jack Jennings' photographs of the Missouri Botanical Garden and its Shaw Nature Reserve. If only our founder, Henry Shaw, were here to admire Jack's photographs! They have graced the Garden's calendars since the first one appeared in 1982. Henry Shaw, who emigrated from England and arrived in St. Louis in 1820, envisioned a garden that would provide a common place for St. Louisians to meet, to learn about the importance of plants to their lives, and see the beauty of nature. At this garden, educational programs would inform their children and through research lead to discoveries that would profoundly affect their future and the future of society throughout the world. The Missouri Botanical Garden opened in 1859 and has served the public, fulfilling Shaw's vision, ever since.Jack Jennings began photographing the Missouri Botanical Garden in the summer of 1973. As soon as I saw his work, I was struck by its extraordinary quality and the manner in which his eye captured the essence of the natural scene through the seasons. His images have won numerous awards in regional and world-wide competitions, and have been reproduced in the National Geographic, Time, Fine Gardening, the National Gardener, and many other garden and nature magazines. We are very proud of his work, and of the devotion he has shown to his art. In this book he selects a collection of images that reflect the beauty of the Missouri Botanical Garden in each season. We hope that you will find as much joy in it as we do in the Garden itself, and as much as Jack Did taking these beautiful photographs. ... Read more
