Product Description
At a time when analysts speak despairingly of a lost decade of economic development in Africa, Botswana stands out as an example of successful economic performance. Indeed, Botswana attained the highest rate of economic growth in the world during the period 1965-1985; moreover, it did so as a multiparty liberal democracy, albeit one dominated by one political party. The authors of this book examine Botswana's performance to date, seeking to understand the factors that account for its exceptional status and investigating problem areas that might endanger its achievements. They conclude by considering Botswana's prospects within a changing Southern Africa. ... Read more

Product Description
This book identifies the institution of chiefship as the focal point of the critical discourse on continuity and social change in colonial and postcolonial Botswana. Analyzed within an expansive social and political context, the institution of chiefship represents a critical domain for the articulation of local values and aspirations in a rapidly changing, twentieth-century Botswana.

While it underscores the central role of chiefship structures in the historical processes of state formation, this book also analyzes the transformation of the institution of chiefship in three major themes of modern Botswana’s political history: Botswana’s encounter with British imperial rule; the decolonization process of the post-World War II years; and the nation state project of a nationalist elite in the ongoing postcolonial period.

Vaughan clearly illustrates how chiefship serves an effective medium for the analyses of complex expressions of local politics during colonial rule and the developmental policies of modernizing elites in the postcolonial era; and how it has sustained itself as a platform for the re-construction of traditional hierarchies of power amidst the social stratification, communal identities, and spatial relations of Botswana in the twentieth century. ... Product Description
How institutional change comes about and its underlying factors are research questions at the heart of Economic History. Within this and other disciplines there is also a concurrent debate on how property rights institutions affect management and exploitation of natural resources. In this study these two great research issues have been brought down to the local setting in order to capture the processes of continuity and change in property rights institutions governing water resources in two Sub-Sahara African communities.

The aim is to increase empirical knowledge about existing property structures in this region. This is achieved through a reconstruction of how property rights institutions have developed and an identification of the motives determining their development. Property rights theory is scrutinized in search of an analytical framework to guide the empirical investigation and assist in offering an explanation for the findings. In the study economic issues are considered to be part of a larger social context and the investigation is focused on the informal as well as the formal institutional structure. This position has been imperative for the analysis of the African farmers relentless strategies of investing in social networks to attain economic security. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Birds of Botswana
For a birder traveling to Botswana, there are two books that should be considered -- this one and Birds of Southern Africa by the same author. The larger book is similar to the Peterson or Audobon guides familier to USbirders, with large drawings of species, text descriptions and maps. However, it is large, including a thousand or so species. And complex. Many types of birds in Africa have no counterpart in the US.Thus, findinga species in the larger book can be difficult until you become extremelyfamilier with its basic layout and structure.Enter the Birds of Botswana. It is small -- only 80 pages, covering 250 birds. It is lightweight. Most common birds are much easier to find.It has fairly complete text; inmany cases nearly identical to the text in the larger book. Its downsideis that its pictures are quite small, it has no maps, and it is limited tothe most commonly identified species.Due to the lack of maps, it isimpossible to say how useful this book would be in neighboring countries.Frankly, we're taking both on our trip this summer.I expect that when wefield test them, we will find that whoever has the smaller book in handwill identify the vast majority of birds first. On the other hand, I alsowon't be surprized if we have to turn to the larger book for someidentifications.Summary: This is an excellent book for novice orbeginning birders, and a good companion book for more experienced birdersor for those who are not familier with African birds. Finally, if weightor size is you principle criteria, this one is small and would serve mostneeds. ...
