Product Description
J. Mark Thompson and Jeffrey Jon Lemke have compiled and annotated listings of French literature for tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, and bass saxhorn, as well as repertoire suitable for the modern euphonium. In addition to these solo pieces, the authors provide separate listings of pedagogical materials for each of these four instruments. Each entry gives the date of composition or publication of the piece, the publisher, the length, the range, the level of difficulty, an indication of its use as a competition solo at the Paris Conservatory, and a description of its musical style or character. "French Music for Low Brass Instruments" is a valuable guide for teachers and students about a field that until now has not been investigated in depth. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars description not accurate - this is book 2!
I was looking for book 1 and had no idea that a book 2 existed. The picture was so small that the book number was not clear and the description of the book did not mention that it is book 2 instead of book 1.I had to find book 1 on another source and hope that my son will eventually need book 2!The description was misleading and as a mom with no musical experience trying to find an introductory book for her child I feel like I was duped into buying something I didn't need. ... Product Description
Exploring the parallel development of the brass band movement and religious fervor in late 19th-century America, this work includes illustrations from original materials as well as scores for 22 works. While the choral tradition has remained strong in churches, in this earlier period both choral and instrumental forms were equally popular. This study begins with solo cornet parts, used by men like George Ives to lead the singing at revival meetings, and ends with an extensive band arrangement of Pleyel's Hymn. Extensive historical notes, old-time illustrations, and sacred music make this a most interesting and useful reference book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Brass Players
This is a "must have" book for all brass players and has been since I got my first copy way back in 1986!Having said that, it can be a bit high brow unless you are really dedicated to getting that sound and, probably, playing or teaching professionally. It is very thought provoking and presents some interesting ideas and techniques but tends to be written in a very old school manner, meaning you have to persevere in order to get to the meat of the subject. It's worth trying out the various techniques and seeing what works and doesn't work for you.Brass playing can be a personal thing and you don't need to take everything as gospel...I am of the "brassy" school and this tends to contradict some of the methods presented here. There are a lot of valuable points regarding tone production etc., however, and if you try to be a discerning reader you will get a lot from this book. There's also a very useful appendix which includes a lot of material not in the original older copy.Don`t expect too much from the print quality:the production of the book is very cheap and the binding is of the cheap and nasty "glued" variety.I'm on the verge of hole punching the pages which have worked their way loose and making a ring bound copy that actually stays together!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and simple book by an great brass instructor.
Although I was a clarinetist, I studied trumpet and French horn from Fred Fox at Cal State University at Los Angeles. He taught us to develop and maintain quality tone and technique on any brass instrument. From Fred, we also learned how to teach students to play any brass instrument with excellent tone and technique. I found that his teachings helped me play woodwinds with better control of my tone and they also improved my singing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hummel Concerto
This is excellent for trumpet players that want the sheet music, the professional example, and piano accompaniment in order to learn and perform the music with or without the accompaniment. The only criticism is that the piano seems a bit muffled. An interesting sidelite is that the accompaniment portion without the trumpet is at a slower tempo in the Rondo, which is probably beneficial for the novice. ... Read more
