Product Description
The colonization of Africa, Asia and Latin America was carried out to the music of horns and the beating of drums. Brass bands marched in the footsteps of soldiers and missionaries; all over the world music was a weapon for impressing the natives with the military, religious and cultural superiority of European civilization. Local musicians soon discovered that brass lent itself to something more than just playing Western marches, songs and hymns. In the most distant corners of the world, brass bands were appropriated as dance orchestras, wedding bands and funeral ensembles that adapted to local musical traditions.

Rob Boonzajer Flaes is an anthropologist at the University of Amsterdam. In "Brass Unbound" he describes through photographs and eyewitness accounts, the legacy and transformation of nineteenth century bands into African highlight music, Indian and Nepalese band parties, Suranamese winti bands, and the zinc orchestras of the Minahasa.

The books includes a CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The viewpoint of an anthropologist as well as a musician
Very few books on African music come with their own cd and the viewpoint of an anthropologist as well as a musician, but Rob Flaes' BRASS UNBOUND is a unique ticket exploring both the history of African music's colonial influences and the stature and influence of brass bands on African sounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable Sax and Horn Book
An entertaining and informative book that covers mostly the nineteenth century history of sax and brass instruments, and the key players and genres under their influence. This book has many pluses:Production quality; skilled authors who also play, know and love their subject matter; numerous vintage photos of instruments, ads and players; and a concise reference section profiling the major manufactures. At 120-pages, it is no encyclopedia on the subjects, but I can't think of anything I would change to improve this book.It covers saxes more than brass, maybe on a 2:1 ratio, but I didn't mind that balance.A thoroughly enjoyable read, especially for horn players and collecters.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth the bucks
I stated collecting older brass instruments a few years ago and this is a great reference too.
More pics next edition please.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I was part of the original conceptual team for this book and was verypleased to see the final outcome. This book is extremely well-written withlots of great photographs and charts. The focus is primarily on thesaxophone, and die hard collectors/enthusiasts will appreciate the factualintegrity of the book.I found the pictures particularly interesting, since most (if not all) of the horns pictured were distributed in the UK. Thus, you see some great export variants of the classic Selmer BalancedAction and Conn 10M.I highly recommend this great work to anyone wholoves the saxophone. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the first comprehensive study of the trombone in English. It covers the instrument, its repertoire, the way it has been played, and the social, cultural, and aesthetic contexts within which it has developed. The book explores the origins of the instrument, its invention in the fifteenth century, and its story up to modern times, also revealing hidden aspects of the trombone in different eras and countries.
The book looks not only at the trombone within classical music but also at its place in jazz, popular music, popular religion, and light music. Trevor Herbert examines each century of the trombone’s development and details the fundamental impact of jazz on the modern trombone. By the late twentieth century, he shows, jazz techniques had filtered into the performance idioms of almost all styles of music and transformed ideas about virtuosity and lyricism in trombone playing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
I don't play the trombone, but had purchased this at a used book sale for a friend who does. In flipping through the book and reading certain parts, it is well written and researched. If you have a serious trombone player in your life they will appreciate the effort that went into writing this overview and history.

Specific chapters include the instruments and its parts, techniques, origins, players and culture in the later Renaissance, performances in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the decline and survival and rehabilitation of the trombone, the trombone in the modern orchestra and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scholarly Treatment
As both professional trombonist and academician, Trevor Herbert is perfectly positioned to have rendered what appears to be the instrument's definitive history. Yale University Press does not publish fluff, and this is a serious book. It is, however, a well-written and accessible read for one who wants to know the history of the trombone, its repertoire, and its notable performers. ... Read more
