Excerpt: Horseshoe Bay is a West Vancouver community of about 1,000 permanent residents. Situated right on the western tip of West Vancouver, at the entrance to Howe Sound, the village marks the western end of Highway 1 on the British Columbia mainland. It is also the southern end of the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with Lions Bay just 15 minutes north. A major BC Ferries terminal is located here, providing vehicle ferry links to Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and Bowen Island, a small island in the southern part of Howe Sound. There are currently 3 berths at Horseshoe Bay, making it the third largest BC Ferries terminal, after Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay. In 2005 the Queen of Oak Bay ferry lost control and smashed into a number of private boats at the marina in Horseshoe Bay; no fatalities were reported. Be...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4545112 ... A great resource for botanists, native plant enthusiasts, ecologists, conservationists, and amateur naturalists who desire a comprehensive, up-to-date, and well-illustrated book for the identification of plants of the Pacific Northwest. This is the definitive guide to the rich and varied plant life of the region, from the ocean shore to the crest of the Cascades, from British Columbia south through the Klamath Mountains of southwestern Oregon and the Siskiyous in northwestern California. Its botanical coverage is complete, including plants native to the region as well as those that have been introduced and become naturalized. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best plant book for the West
I have been frustrated by many field guides and their incomplete listing of plants. This book, although a little large and heavy for being easily carried on a hike, is none the less, the best guide for plants of the west, from Canada to Southern Oregon (where I live)Found many listings that I had no idea what the plants were till I got this book.Highly recommended for any one looking to identify what they see on any type of nature walk, hike, or trip...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book... and good transaction.
I'm going to Oregon and HAVE to know what plants are there so this book is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for me
This book may be the most comprehensive, definitive book on NW flora, but it's not very helpful to me.It's like reading a technical manual.I realize there are people who enjoy reading technical manuals, but most people don't.(That's not to say there's anything wrong with technical manuals, they just don't interest most people.)So my assumption is this book isn't written for most people.

I'd love for someone to take the information in this book and make it more engaging and accessible. Now there's a book that a wider audience would value and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I would give this book an A-almost there and ahead of the rest.
needs a little more in the photo section for easy ID but beats the heck out of the Hitchcock that I have carried for years. I now have 2 copies..one at home and one in my pack

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Pacific Northwest regional flora
For over 30 years the regional flora for the Pacific Northwest was Hitchcock et al., Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest. For people on the wet side of the mountains, Kozloff provides a new standard guide. He gives us a wealth of fine photographs (over 700 in color) and illustrations, with clear descriptions and keys, allowing identification of nearly every species found in western Washington and Oregon (experts have noticed that a few species are missed, though).Non-native species are identified, with reference to their country of origin. As the most recent comprehensive text, it also provides a reasonably current taxonomic picture of the region as well, which is very useful as hundreds of new names have appeared since the days of Hitchcock. In sum, if you want the definitive flora for the region, this is it.If you want something more portable, though, you should look at a field guide - Pojar and MacKinnon's. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This atlas defines, measures, and maps wellness for the Province of British Columbia. Using mostly readily available data, the atlas aims to focus on what is right and well with respect to health, instead of taking the traditional approach of emphasizing what is sick and wrong. Maps inform about health regions that, for example, are the most smoke-free, have the largest number of recreational centres and playing fields per capita, or score highest on self-reported wellness indicators. The atlas covers themes related to health determinants, smoke-free environments, food security, physical activity, healthy weights, and wellness outcomes using more than 270 maps, differentiating many of the themes by gender as well as age categories. A refreshing and fascinating look at health and wellness taking an asset approach that shows that the glass is more than half-full!The BC Atlas of Wellness was created in partnership with the University of Victoria Geography Department. It springs from the ActNow BC initiative, which was introduced in early 2005 to encourage British Columbians to make healthy lifestyle choices to improve their quality of life, reduce the incidence of preventable chronic disease, and reduce the burden on the health care system.” ... Product Description
In the 240 years from contact to the present, British Columbia's population has experienced transformations of a kind and magnitude witnessed nowhere else in North America. The introduction of exotic diseases changed the human landscape almost overnight, as did gold rushes, industrialization, two world wars, a baby boom, late 20th-century immigration from Asia, and a grey wave. Becoming British Columbia is the first comprehensive, demographic history of this province. Investigating critical moments in the demographic record and linking demographic patterns to larger social and political questions, it shows how biology, politics, and history conspire with sex, death, and migration to create a particular kind of society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for anyone cruising the B.C. Coast!
After using this book for a month and logging in hundreds of waypoints I have high praise for it's accuracy and user friendly layout. Often, as in passing a buoy, I had the chance to do an accuracy check. The waypointsfrom this book passed with 'flying colors' . We also had fun taking turnsplotting our own waypoints and comparing. The book was hard to beat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive list of reference points
Used this book extensively during the summer, not many places I looked forwere not listed! Was a great help for entering waypoints in my GPS unit. ... Read more
