Product Description
Under the Tudor monarchy, English law expanded to include the category of "treason by words." Rebecca Lemon investigates this remarkable phrase both as a legal charge and as a cultural event. English citizens, she shows, expressed competing notions of treason in opposition to the growing absolutism of the monarchy. Lemon explores the complex participation of texts by John Donne, Ben Jonson, and William Shakespeare in the legal and political controversies marking the Earl of Essex's 1601 rebellion and the 1605 Gunpowder Plot.

Lemon suggests that the articulation of diverse ideas about treason within literary and polemical texts produced increasingly fractured conceptions of the crime of treason itself. Further, literary texts, in representing issues familiar from political polemic, helped to foster more free, less ideologically rigid, responses to the crisis of treason. As a result, such works of imagination bolstered an emerging discourse on subjects' rights. Treason by Words offers an original theory of the role of dissent and rebellion during a period of burgeoning sovereign power. ... Read more

Product Description
What makes Shakespeare great? Why do we still read and perform his works? In this deft and witty introduction, David Bevington argues that Shakespeare continues to live among us today because his representations of the human condition are believable, endearing, and touchingly human. The book is structured around Shakespeare’s immortalizing of the arc of human life from infancy and childhood to adulthood, advancing age, and eventual death, as set out by Jaques in the ‘Seven Ages of Man’ speech from As You Like It.

For this extended second edition, the author has added more material on fathers and sons, the perils of courtship, the circumstances of Shakespeare’s own life, the performance history of his plays on stage and on screen, his delicate representation of gender relations, and more. In a new final chapter on Shakespeare Today, he looks at the remarkable diversity of interpretations in modern criticism and performance of Shakespeare as a key to his ‘infinite variety’, and his ability to adapt to a changing world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful for Students
For students struggling with Shakespeare, or the play Hamlet in particular, this book will prove extremely enlightening and useful. It consists of numerous short, very informative articles, written by noted literary scholars or experts on the play, among them R.A. Foakes, Marvin Rosenberg, Rebebba West, and even the great Shakespearean actor Laurence Olivier himself. The editor, Don Nardo, provides an excellent introductory article that sums up Shakespeare and his times, and also a generous bibliography that will give students plenty of supllementary material to look for. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Why Shakespeare Couldn't Sleep and You Can
From the title, I judged this to be a spoof, and possibly one of the sources of the movie SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. I was mistaken. It is a thoroughly-researched monograph about Shakespeare's numerous references to insomnia in his work, and what those references suggest about him. If you're not especially interested in Shakespeare as a man, you probably won't enjoy this book, but I did. ... Read more
