Product Description
What you need to know to survive, long term.

Interests between broadcasters and telecom people are blurring. Technical operations and design engineers in one field are increasingly required to deal with practices and techniques in the other. The problem is expectations and terminology differences aren't recognized until it's too late.

Take "Quality of Service." The telecom people specify a percentage of the time that the service is guaranteed to be available. The down time may be very, very small. But, if it occurs during a high-priced commercial in the Super Bowl, it is very, very serious for the broadcaster. Practical IP and Telecom for Broadcast Engineering and Operations teaches the technology and how to structure it and make sure the finances work in your favor.

Learn how to:

* Define communications circuit, equipment, facilities and services used in broadcast engineering and operations.
* Evaluate suppliers as well as their products and services.
* Prepare technical specifications and requests for bids, proposals required in competitive procurement actions.
* Conduct communications operational effectiveness and cost audits.
* Prepare communications cost management strategies and plans.
* Plan and execute capital projects.
* Survive Long-Term

Critical for engineers, technicians, and managers engaged in designing, installing, testing, and maintaining equipment and network services for program content, training material, or audio/video conferencing. Valuable knowledge for planning, design, integration and operation of communications equipment, facilities and services used in broadcast operations, training and conferencing applications.

Fred Huffman is a systems engineer with Athens Olympic Broadcasting, the Host Broadcaster for the 2004 Games. He has more than 35 years experience in technical and management roles in broadcasting and telecommunications fields. This work is largely a reflection of that experience, captured in a way that introduces the reader to technical aspects of IP, ATM and classical telecom, along with business essentials such as contracts, tariffs, project planning, budgeting and long range planning.

*Entry level--introduces broadcasters to Internet & telecom
*Learn about communications technology and it's business aspects so you can survive long-term
*Written by one of the few people truly conversant in Internet, Telecom and Broadcast speak, with a solid understanding of business economics ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to enhance Flash projects using the tools of AE (& vice-versa) - very well-written and clear on technical subjects
One of the things I've discovered as I'm beginning to learn Adobe's Creative Suite is that each of the major programs overlaps with several of the others in the kinds of things it can do, but each one has some things it does best, or that it alone can do.Understanding the strengths and limitations of each program, but also how they can work together is really what it takes to take full advantage of the rich possibilities for creative design that are offered by this suite of programs.Flash+After Effects is an easy to read but sophisticated guide for getting started in that process, of going beyond a basic familiarity with a few programs and seeing how they can work together.Aimed primarily at the Flash user who wants to use After Effects to enhance flash projects and to output them for use in film and video, this book shows you how.

As evidenced by his writing in this book, Chris Jackson is a natural teacher.Jackson's not just technically precise, he doesn't just give clear instructions for the hand-on projects that are covered in this book, he explains simply why things work the way they do.This book strikes a nice balance between focused tutorials (using content that can be downloaded from the book's website), explanation of how and why things work the way they do, and helpful charts and diagrams outlining technical details and general strategies.I know I'll keep this one in my reference collection to pull down whenever I'm working on Flash or After Effects projects, and especially when I transferring files from one program to another, or trying to understand the difference between a range of file formats. The book is not merely helpful in the sense of being informative, it is for the most part enjoyable to read, since Jackson is a very good writer and an effective teacher. The fact that he has extensive classroom experience shows in the way he writes. What's more, the exercises he leads you through (using starter files that are easy to download from Focal Press's website) are each intriguing and fun to follow. They introduced me to effects and styles of working in After Effects and Flash that I'd not seen before, and the final results of each were very professional looking.Perhaps one of the most valuable features of the book is its clarity on the subject of how file formats work and what is involved in adapting animations designed for computer playback so that it will play on television.I'd read lots of discussions of video and never understood until now, for example, how exactly to adjust video for the fact that NTSC and PAL formats have non-square pixels; or understood exactly why "title safe" standards are set the way they are, or why NTSC plays back at a rate of 29.97 rather than 30fps, or the impact on file size of vector versus raster images.

The first chapter gives a quick introduction to the basics of After Effects for Flash users (which I mostly skimmed because I know AE, but I still learned a few effects and ways of working I hadn't done before). The next couple of chapters cover in very useful detail issues regarding different file formats, and mostly how best to take work created in Flash and enhance it in AE and work created in AE and modify it in Flash, by adding code, for example. He makes clear that there are a number of different ways to do these things, and different projects call for different processes. If it's critical to get your files as small as possible, for example, he shows how that can be done. After laying out the basics, he has chapters on how best to get the best of both worlds, combining features like interactivity and bone-based animation from Flash with keying, type animation, 3d and other visual effects from AE.Highly recommended for experienced Flash users who want to enhance their projects, but it was also valuable for me, a relative Flash novice (though not an absolute beginner - you'd be lost here if you had never worked with Flash before). One of the reasons I haven't done more with Flash is based on my impression that it lacked some of the tools for sophisticated graphics that you find in After Effects and Photoshop.Reading through this book and working through several of the projects has shown that it doesn't need to be about either one or the other, and I've already got some ideas for Flash-based projects that I don't think I would have considered before encountering this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two great tastes that taste great together
I just got this book. These are my first impressions:Great book! It's geared toward someone with heavier on the Flash side, however, I think it still works for me (I use both programs) I think will be useful because the overview of new tools as well as the integration between Flash and After Effects.

I'm especially happy to review this book for several reasons:
It seems to make good use of the newer tools in After Effect (CS5) and Flash (CS5):Bones and the new implementation of cue points with Flash Video, the new roto brush (AE), etc.
As someone who uses both of these programs - I've seen others who only use Flash and miss out on tons of time saving tools in After Effects.I'm happy that the CD also comes with lots of code examples for interactive projects as well as some nice motion graphics looking typography (using After Effects)

I'm very excited about the possible synergies between the two programs that this book teaches about.

It looks like it is a great addition to my library! ... Read more

Product Description
With the boom of Internet, IP-based applications, such as WWW and multimedia, bave been an essential part of our life, and there is an ever-increasing demand for accessing high-speed Internet services anywhere and anytime. This trend unavoidably has huge impacts on the design of the next-generation satellite systems. On the other hand, with its broadcasting nature and unique coverage, satellite systems also can play an important role in the next-generation Internet. For example, satellite systems can be a good driver for the deployment of IPv6 in the Internet, and can provide a fast way to reach end-users because they do not rely on construction of a high-speed terrestrial networks. The workshop proceedings will focus on the IP networking of next-generation satellite systems. Topics include IPv6 over satellites, new architectures of next-generation satellite systems, satellite and terrestrial network integration, network monitoring and measurement, and perfmance enhancement. ... "Come along, Bill; we'll have to get there, or we won't hear the first of it. Mr. Gray said it would begin promptly at three."

"I'm doing my best, Gus. This crutch----"

"I know. Climb aboard, old scout, and we'll go along faster." The first speaker, a lad of fifteen, large for his age, fair-haired, though as brown as a berry and athletic in all his easy, deliberate yet energetic movements, turned to the one he had called Bill, a boy of about his own age, or a little older, but altogether opposite in appearance, for he was undersized, dark-haired, black-eyed, and though a life-long cripple with a twisted knee, as quick and nervous in action as the limitations of his physical strength and his ever-present crutch permitted.
