Excerpt: The IndonesiaMalaysia confrontation (also known as Konfrontasi in Indonesian and Malay) was an undeclared war over the future of the island of Borneo, between British-backed Malaysia and Indonesia during 19621966. The origins of the conflict lay in Indonesian attempts to destabilise the new Federation of Malaysia, which came into being in 1963. Malaya had been given its independence by Britain in 1957 and United Kingdom wished to form the federation of Malaysia encompassing the states of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Singapore. Borneo In 1961, the island of Borneo was divided into four separate states: Kalimantan, comprising four Indonesian provinces, was located in the south of the island. In the north, separated from Kalimantan by a border some 1000 miles long were the Sultanate of Brunei (a British protectorate) and two British coloniesSarawak and British North Borneo (which was later renamed Sabah). The three British territories totalled some 1.5 million people, about half of them Dayaks. Sarawak had a population of about 900,000, Sabah 600,000 while Brunei was about 80,000. The breakdown of the non-Dayak population was: Sarawak 31% Chinese, 19% Malay; Sabah 21% Chinese, 7% Malay; Brunei 28% Chinese 54% Malay. There was a large Indonesian population in Tawau in southern Sabah and a large and economically active Chinese one in Sarawak. However, despite their population size Dayaks were the least politically org...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=206387 ... Read more

Product Description
The most up-to-date and user-friendly guide to the birds of Borneo, covering Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan. This guide gives descriptions of 664 species living or reported on the island, including 51 endemic species. These are superbly illustrated in 141 color plates with more than 2,000 full color bird images, including most of the sexual variants and immature forms of polymorphic species. Each plate is accompanied by species descriptions covering nomenclature, length, voice, range, distribution and status and habits, with distribution shown by detailed thumnail maps. There are seven habitat plates, 12 regional maps showing Borneo's top 130 birdwatching sites, fast-find graphic indexes to the birds of Kinabalu and other habitats and a full overview of vegetation, climate and ecology. Indonesians refer to Borneo as as "Kalimantan". However, for people outside of Indonesia, Kalimantan refers to the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea to the north and northwest, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait to the east and the Java Sea and Karimata Strait to the south. To the west of Borneo are the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. To the south is Java. To the east is the island of Sulawesi (Celebes). To the northeast is the Philippines. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great plates (some re-used) for all species; unique format
Basics:2010, 368pages, softcover; 141 good color plates of all 660+ species found on Borneo, 11 pages and 11 maps show 100+ birding sites; brief text covers identification, song and range;natural history notes scattered throughout the book

This is another nice book to add to the few that cover all the birds on the island of Borneo.Like the recently published "A Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo" by Myers, this new book by Phillipps focuses on just those 660+ birds found on Borneo. These are shown with about 2,000 different illustrations, with a greater number dedicated to the non-passerines.The shorebirds and raptors receive a greater proportion of illustrations.

To clarify "new", this book is actually a combination of newly created plates plus older plates taken from "A Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Bali".This source book from 1993 was also illustrated by Phillipps. In all, only 55 (40%) of the 141 plates are new.The remaining plates use the same illustrations and poses pulled directly from the older book.A few new illustrations are sometimes injected amongst the old illustrations. The older plates have been slightly modified. Some have the illustrations enlarged by about 30%.Others have undergone minor touch-ups with coloration or background. As an example, the stick on which the Scarlet Minivet is perched now sports a little bit of dangling moss versus the original bare branch.Another difference is many of the birds in the older plates have been rearranged into two or three plates, which allows for larger illustrations of each bird.

Except for a few plates, the artwork is very good and does a nice job at showing the plumage details and patterns as well as the bird's posture. Some plates, such as the Jungle-Flycatchers, are very nicely done. The effort put into the three species of frigatebird is also commendable. Each bird receives its own plate showing at least 8 different illustrations that cover the highly variable age and gender differences. The highly colorful pittas have been repainted and both plates look great. In contrast, the plate showing the Green, Whitehead's and Hose's Broadbills as well as the plate with the plain spiderhunters are sketchy and unchanged from the original 1993 publication.

The text is the weaker component of this field guide, which consists of 5-8 lines per bird. There is very little descriptive or identification material given. At best, a dozen words may be offered for only similar species. The remainder of the information describes the range of the bird on Borneo and provides notes on its habitat.Descriptions of its voice are also given. What this means is most or all of your field identification will be based solely on the plates.

One other small critique is the number of birds shown by only a single illustration. This is unfortunately also true for nearly half of the 51 endemics.

Each bird is accompanied by a small range map that uses four different colors. These represent coastal seabirds and mainland residents, migrants, and endemics.I really like the special attention of using red to denote the range for each of the endemic birds.I wish more field guides would draw attention to the endemics to make them stand out. This is immediately useful for the travelling birder who may be more unfamiliar with the local avifauna.

The author's have made a detour from the typical field guide format which I think works in a positive manner.Scattered throughout the book are small inserts of natural history notes.Examples are "Why some cuckoos mimic birds of prey" and "Japanese birds that winter in Borneo."At first, these seem to be a distraction. Now, I like these additions. They don't bulk up the book in any significant manner, yet offer some true reading material when you're done or tired of studying the plates for identification.

Another twist is the inclusion of 100+ birding sites on the island. This adds only 22 pages to the book:Eleven for text and another 11 pages to display large well-marked maps. The text provides directions on how to find the many localities along with listing target birds and many of the expected birds.I think this is a good strategy to include maps and birding site locations within a field guide - especially for travelling birders.I like to carry only one book versus several so long as the book does not become too bulky - which it does not in this case.

Which book should you take to Borneo:Myers's or Phillipps's?Really, it doesn't matter because both are good books. Each has its unique format that differs from most other field guides. My personal preference is Phillipps's due to the artwork, the greater number of illustrations, and, the notes and maps. However, the identification material in Myer's is definitely better.Just take both!- (written by Jack at Avian Review / Avian Books, January 2010)

Product Description
This study of the final stage of British colonial involvement in South East Asia begins with the arrival of British troops in Indonesia as liberators in 1945-6 and culminates with the 1963-6 period of confrontation between Malaysia and Indonesia. Greg Poulgrain seeks to show how confrontation with Indonesia was deliberately provoked to facilitate the inclusion of Sarawek in Malaysia and to bring down Sukarno. At the crux of this policy was the Brunei revolt of 1962. In examining the political situation of Brunei before the instigation and the reactions of Indonesia at the time, this text aims to vindicate the role of Brunei's A.M. Azahari who had anticipated a federation of the three Borneo states headed by the Sultan of Brunei as constitutional monarch. ... Read more

As a participant in several aspects of this book, having lived in Brunei and Singapore for some seventeen years, I can only admire the considerable research needed to compile such a work.

Whilst being very readable, it is also an eye opener as to the various political involvments and relationships during the post war period in South East Asia.
This is a must read for anyone looking to understand the lead up to the December 1962 rebellion in Brunei. ... Read more
