While I am a big fan of Charles Burns, his art loses some of its effectiveness in the absence of a storyline.Sure, there are the usual deformed creatures, but gone are the themes of lost innocence and childhood confusion over sex and parental morals that add to the creepiness of his illustrations.The drawings are enjoyable, but for the most part they appear to have been quickly sketched on napkins while awaiting dinner in a dark restaurant.This is for diehard fans only. ... Burns, a physicist retired to a second career in the history of electrical engineering, presents the second biography of Blumlein (1903-42) this year. He describes how the British electronics engineer contributed enormously to the fields of telephony and electrical measurements, monophonic and stereophonic recording and reproduction, high definition television, electronics, antennas and cables, and radar systems of various types. Because the policy of the company he worked for discouraged publishing, only two learned society papers exist, there is no collection of personal letters, and most his friends and coworkers are dead, Burns has had to draw heavily on the 128 patents granted him between 1927 and 1942, but relegates the technical material to chapter-end notes for the sake of those who just want a good story.

London east end Family Saga set in 1941
I have a number of books by Patricia Burns that I enjoy reading.This one was a bit too realistic for my tastes, however if you like east end family sage, with questions about who fathered which child etc. this one will probably appeal.
