4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
I am a para professional in a high school working with visually impaired and blind students. This book is an excellent reference book when preparing materials for these students. There are so many rules in braille and sometimes it's hard to remember them all - especially if they're not used often.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
This book is an excellent reference for those Teachers of the Visually Impaired who's braille skills may be a little rusty. It's also a great "cheat sheet" for those who have newly learned braille, for transcribing.I've recommended this book to parents of visually impaired children who have taken my braille class, and they love it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic for Braillists, too difficult for beginners
This is a book of just the basic contractions and rules. It is not a dictionary of print-text and their braille equivalents (other than the standard contractions and short-form words).

There is a section ofprint-text to braille inalphabetic order, and one of braille toprint-text in cell "order".The rules relating to each wordorsymbol are placed right by the word or symbol, and this is the best thingabout the book.

A beginner is not going to learn braille from this book;it is a handy, small reference forthose who already know the rules andjust need a quick refresher on usage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating.
Stanley B. Burns, A Morning's Work: Medical Photographs from the Burns Archive and Collection (Twin Palms, 1998)

"A Morning's Work" is the title of a photograph, included here, from Civil War times. It was taken by a surgeon and depicts a pile of amputated feet. While Burns talks about other interpretations one can have of the photograph's title, the simple surface of the thing is enough to give you an insight into what you're going to find here. (Burns also mentions in that introduction that Joel-Peter Witkin has made use of the Burns Collection on occasion. And if you don't know who Joel-Peter Witkin is, you're probably not reading this review.) The hundred-odd photographs that Burns has selected for this volume are often grotesque and always fascinating. Like all of the (few) Twin Palms books I've encountered, it is wonderfully put-together; this is a book that will last you a lifetime, as long as you don't run over it with an SUV or something. What there is to be read into the permanence of grotesquerie, I shall leave to the individual. That said, I would go no more than five pages at a time without finding another photograph that said "you need to use me for an album cover." (And what that says about the reviewer I'm sure is much less a puzzle. I have long been a fan of Joel-Peter Witkin's.)

Reviewing a book like this seems an exercise in futility; you're either going to be struck by it, or you're not. And if you're struck by it, there's a strong chance you're going to pick it up no matter what I have to say about it. But let the record show that I found myself unable to look away, I found the notes illuminating, and I continue to respect the way Twin Palms puts a book together; very few companies these days pay as much attention to the actual, physical construction of a book as they do. Whether you pick up a copy or not will depend on how you feel about the subject matter, but keep my recommendation in the back of your head if you're on the fence. For I do recommend this book if you're at all interested in the history of medicine, the history of photography, or a combination of the two. *** ½

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon.com purchase
The book I ordered was as advertised and arrived in perfect condition.I have made four book purchases through Amazon and have been pleased each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars reference with artistry
definitely worth the price tag.Book is packed with period medical photographs, which while grotesque are also very artistically framed. All of the pictures are together, a page per picture so you can flip though the images without text interrupting the artistic presentation. The back of the book is devoted to thorough captions for each photo. Some of the photos look staged but this too fits the period represented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Compelling!
Stanley Burns is a physician and a collector of medical history photographs. You may remember his previous book of mortuary photographs entitled "Sleeping Beauty" which is long out of print and fetches incredible sums among used book dealers.(Fortunately, a sequel - "Sleeping Beauty II" is more readily available.) "A Morning's Work" is a collection of 127 vintage medical photographs from 1843 to 1939 along with a helpful narrative explanation of the photographs and their cultural significance. Although some of the pictures are more historically significant than interesting, the bulk of the images are of medical curiosities - and some of them are absolutely head-scratchingly bizarre. Among the images featured are mortuary photographs, images of amputations, surgical procedures, disfigurement, and a wide assortment of congenital and acquired diseases. The title "A Morning's Work" is taken from an image of a pile of amputated limbs taken during the Civil War, when the horrific wounds inflicted by the large leadshots used at the time resulted in amputations for even the most minor of injuries. Many of the photographs take us back to the Dark Days of medicine, before antiseptic procedures were implemented, and when a small wound could result in a deadly infection in a matter of days.

The narrative explanations of the photographs add a special poignance to them. For example, a photograph of a dead man would not be nearly so interesting were it not for Burns' explanation that the man was Dr. James Howe who contracted Cholera while treating patients during the St. Louis epidemic of 1849 and was fatally afflicted. That one sombre portrait seems to symbolize the bravery and sacrifice of physicians the world over during times of pestilence, and if there's anything that you come away with after viewing this book, it's a newfound appreciation for modern medicine. All told, "A Morning's Work" is a fascinating book - and a must for enthusiasts of the bizarre and medical historians alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning look at human body
This book is very harsh, unpleasant, but impressive. Not at all for anybody because you need to have the guts to keep your glance at the pictures mirroring the abnormal, the illnesses, the horror of nature, the facts of the old times of surgery. As Bacon's paintings these pictures have a very sui-generis aesthetics, based upon the ugly and the deformity. ... Read more

As an avid fan of Burns and Allen, I found it very hard to accept George and Gracie out of character and in new roles for these theatre shows. This seemed to make the shows unenjoyable for me and very hard to listen to. Though I will try listening again in the future in hopes to finally appreciate their perfomances outside of The Burns and Allen Show. As for now I will just stick to the original show Gracie and George seem to be designed for best...Burns and Allen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars George Burns
Received item in an appropriate amount of time and it was in great condition. Very happy.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Storyteller to Beat All.
This little book contains anecdotes about the people in his life, and published shortly his 100th birthday. It contains accounts of his silliness in vaudeville theaters, where he used an assortment of names as he joined different acts.He appeared at the Shubert Theatre in Chicago with Fanny Brice of Ziegfield Follies fame; she was Baby Snooks character on radio. At the Chicago World's Fair, he was on the same bill with Sally Rand who had become famous for the fan dances she perfected in her flesh colored leotards. It wasn't naughty, only an illusion. He filled in for her and nobody noticed.

Betty McGrath at the Dewey Theater liked his "after shave" lotion (which incidentally smalled like fish); he loved to tell about his girls before becoming a team with Gracie Allen. He wrote 'Gracie: A Love Story' after her death. He knew famous stars of the day, like Al Jolson, following Carusa, "Folks, you ain't heard nothing yet."He calls Al the best entertainer of all time, and George Jessel as the funniest ad-libber. When he and Gracie took their show to California, they used the Artie Shaw band with Tony Martin as lead singer. They made some musicals with big name casts.Later he made movies, "The Sunshine Boys," "Oh, God!" and "Going in Style."

These are the remembrances of a very funny guy; on t.v. he was a riot.He wrote about Eddie Cantor, Jack Benny, Groucho Marx at the William Morris Christmas parties. One Christmas Eve he was appearing at one of the nightclubs in Las Vegas with Ann Margaret who was allowed to use his phone to call her mother in Sweden; talked for over an hour at his expense. He told a few off-color jokes about his friends and siblings in his inimitable manner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the paper book
No where near the full 100 stories and its just not the same with out Georges own voice. Buy the paper copy and hear George in your mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun ancedotes written by Mr. Burns himself
It seems that no matter what he writes about, from the introduction about getting older to his nurse readjusting his toupee, he does it so very well with humor.(I did not even know that he wore a toupee!)

These are really short one to two page stories of incidents that had occurred during his lifetime. It may or may not have you laughing out loud.It will at the very least, bring a smile to your face.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very funny book
This came out almost the day Burns passed away. This is a very funny anecdotal review of George Burns' entire life -- many of the stories go back to his childhood.(His one-liner when the tough Irish kids in his neighborhood demanded to know if he was Catholic is priceless!Good thing he was a fast runner....)

He was a very funny guy, and the book reads as though you could bring him back for a day and hang out while he just sits and tells stories.A lot of fun -- too bad it seems to be out of print. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Claim Your Blessing!
The book called THE PRAYER OF JABEZ was phenominal with an awakening power of the Holy Spirit's call to spiritual Israel to awake and receive the blessings that God has already bestowed upon us.I pray this prayer everyday. It is on my refrigerator as a reminder to pray and thank God for His blessings that He has already promised in His Word to His children. The prayer of Jabez is found in I Chronicles 4:9-10.After the author of Chronicles has gone through the long list of members in the family tree of the Hebrew tribes, he comes to the tribe of Judah. The reader has to read forty-four names of the descendants of Judah's tribe in chapter 4 before the short story, consisting of only two verses that many of us have missed when reading through the Bible, shines through. I had missed this light previously. It was only through the leadership of the Holy Spirit, which came through several Christian friends, that I finally read the book and received the richness of the contents of this Godly prayer.Bruce Wilkinson challenges us as Christians to believe and receive the blessings that are rightfullyand legally our own.I am praying this prayer for myself, my family, and my church.I am claiming the power of God in my life which He continues to reveal in and through His people by the workings of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that gives life to the Word.He quickens His Word in us and the Word becomes alive in us and flows out of us revealing God's power in and through us.Our faith in Him and our belief that He is working in us will motivate us to act upon what He has promised. This action of faith on our part will release the power of God for us and bring about changes in our lives. We will be blessed, indeed and our borders and territories will be enlarged.God will be faithful to keep us from evil that we may not cause grief or be grieved. The power of God is unlimited.Bless us, indeed, Lord.Enlarge our territory - the whole world is God's territory and we are His heirs and joint heirs. He is our Keeper. He keeps us from evil. When we are weak, He is strong. He knows how to stretch us and make us His warriors. If you, as a Christian, are ready for the transformation that God has available for His people, read this book.As Bruce Wilkinson says in His book, "You know beyond a doubt that you were redeemed for this."I want to encourage God's people to behold the identity that God has given to us!We are notpaupers. We are priests and kings through Christ Jesus! We all need to claim our blessings that God has bestowed upon us. ... Product Description
Robert Burns (1759-1796) (also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as simply The Bard), was a poet and a lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide. He is the bestknown of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a 'light' Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic Movement and after his death became an important source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism. Burns also worked to collect and preserve Scottish folk songs, sometimes revising, expanding, and adapting them. His poem (and song) Auld Lang Syne is often sung at Hogmanay (New Year), and Scots Wha Hae served for a long time as an unofficial national anthem of the country. Other poems and songs of Burns that remain well-known across the world today, include A Red, Red Rose, A Man's A Man for A' That, To a Louse, To a Mouse, The Battle of Sherramuir, and Ae Fond Kiss. ...
