The war in Iraq . . .

No bid contracts awarded to Halliburton . . .

Hurricane Katrina . . .

The CIA leak investigation . . .

The story gets worse and worse. The evidence is glaring. George W. Bush's record as a president is abysmal.
And it's time to impeach him.
The Case for Impeachment lays out the reasons why in a straightforward, letter-of-the-law manner. Mixing the cold, hard facts with the lies and deceptions of this administration, The Case for Impeachment is a serious consideration of Bush's high crimes and misdemeanors while in office. This important and timely book will serve as a rallying cry for all those fed up with George W. Bush's abuses of power.

It's time for the American people and Congress to act. With so much at stake, we have a president whose administration stands out in its criminality and disdain for the rule of law. The Case for Impeachment explains the legal history and grounds for impeaching George W. Bush and brings forth more than a half dozen articles of impeachment the likes of:

*Lying and inducing Congress and the American people into an unjust war.
*Allowing his friends and business cronies to profiteer off the war in Iraq.
*Authorizing torture and rendition of prisoners of war and suspected terrorists--a complete violation of the Geneva Conventions, a treaty the U.S. has signed and is therefore part of our law.
*Stripping American citizens of their Constitutional rights--holding people with no charge, wiretapping them illegally, offering them no trial, and never allowing them to face their accusers.
*Failing in almost every way possible to defend the homeland and our borders.

Hard hitting and persuasive in its argument, The Case for Impeachment will be one of the most talked-about political books for the pathetic remainder of the Bush Presidency.

As timely as today's headlines, this vital book explains why impeachment should be deployed against the serial Constitution-shredder George W. Bush. The third article of impeachment against Richard Nixon was illegal spying on Americans--a crime indisputably committed also by Bush and his cronies. But this book also makes a compelling case that Bush has arrogantly flouted his oath of office and the laws of the land by committing other impeachableoffenses--telling lies to Congress and the American people to take us into an illegal war, violating the War Powers act, abusing the power of his office, failing to protect the United States, and more. Dave Lindorff (a first-rate independent progressive journalist) and Barbara Olshansky (a dedicated civil liberties attorney), in The Case for Impeachment, have restored this vital tool to the arsenal of democracy. Any American who wants to preserve what's left of our precious Bill of Rights from further encroachments, and to repair the Constitutional separation of powers vitiated by George Bush, should read this essential book -- which should also be force-fed to every single member of Congress.
-- Doug Ireland, columnist for the LA Weekly

"In the United States, our best journalism is published in books now and talked about on the radio and the internet. If you get your news from a television or a newspaper, you live in another world. This no doubt contributes to how divided we are politically. Dave Lindorff's and Barbara Olshansky's book could help bridge this national divide. The genius of this book is in its brevity. Lindorff and Olshansky have boiled the list of Bush and Cheney's documented crimes down to an amazingly concise summary, one that however gives a real flavor of the goings on in this criminal administration. I work on these issues and still learned ...

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Good Times As Well As the Bad
The first few pages did not grab my attention. In fact I was disappointed because it was talking about how it hoped the elections of November 2006 would turn out. My next mistake was comparing this book to others rather than on its own merit.Somewhere after the first several pages, the authors hit their stride or I did, and the book held my attention to the end.

Authors Lindorff and Olshanskyfirst ask the question, "Why impeachment?"in which they lay out the deceit and deception perpetrated by Bush & Co. They give the history of impeachment and how it has evolved in American law. Here Lindorff and Olshansky introduce nuance of impeachment that I had not been aware of. "In 1974, the House Judiciary Committed examined the history of federal impeachment proceedings and issued a report describing three categories of impeachable offenses..." 1) "actions involving or exceeding or abusing the constitutional limits on the powers of the office at the expense of the powers of another branch of government" 2) "conduct fundamentally incomparable with the function and purpose of the office of the offender" and 3) are "actions that involved using the power and authority of the offenders' office for an improper purpose or forpersonal gain."

The authors start the next six chapters with an article of impeachment for George W. Bush. They make excellent arguments for impeachment under several of them e.g. When George Bush adds signing statement to bills stating what parts of the bill he will enforce or ignore,or claims that it does not apply to him, he is relegating the legislative branch to an advisory role rather than an equal branch of government. George Bush has taken the first step toward dictatorship by disavowing his vow to uphold the Constitution and laws of the United States. Bush claims this right as commander in chief even though the Constitution clearly states that the President is the C in C of the army and navy only.

But Herr Bush is not their only consideration for impeachment. They add Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice, and Alberto Gonzalez. Here the authors are kind enough to make an important distinction for the reader. The president is the only one who is protected from criminal indictment while in office. His impeachment means only removal from office. However, all the others described here can be impeached and indicted for criminal charges. The knowledgeable reader will be able to imagine with a fair degree of accuracy what those charges might entail.

The appendices here are kind of the grand prize. They include The Downing Street Memo, the Niger Forgeries, the Taguba Report, the International Committee of the Red Cross Report, the FBI Memo Regarding Torture at Guantanamo, the Gonzalez Memo on Torture, The Federal Indictment of I. Lewis Libby, and the Rumsfeld Memo on Torture. These all point to incompetence, deception of the American people, violation of our treaties and the Geneva Conventions. All of these come under the province of high crimes and misdemeanors.

In closing the authors remind us that, "The Constitution was not just conceived as a document for the good times, It was meant to guide the nation through times of conflict, trouble, and stress as well."

It's also bigger than any one man.

The nice people who wrote this book put forth 10 "grounds" for impeaching President Bush.

In order for one to put forth these "grounds" for impeachment with a straight face I can only conclude that that person has not really been paying attention, or they have extremely limited reasoning skills

1. Stole Florida election in 2000.
Gore started the recounts, the recount worked its way through the courts, the Supreme Court decided seven to two to stop the recount the way it was being done, and five to four to let Secretary Harris's certification of the election stand. The issue worked its way through the system the way it was supposed to, the system reached a conclusion.Bottom line George Bush "stole" nothing.

2. Lied on Iraq to Congress, the Public, and the United Nations.
To lie is to knowingly tell a falsehood. The position articulated by the Bush administration with regard to Iraq's WMD's and other bad behavior, is the same position that every major intelligence agency believed. The British, the French, the Israelis, the Italians, the Russians, etc. all believe the same thing about Saddam and his weapons program. No objective observer could conclude that Bush lied.

3. 9-11 Cover-Up and Obstruction of Justice.
The most ridiculous charge on a list of ridiculous charges. It truly does not warrant a response.Only the most mentally deranged subscribe to the various 9/11 cover-up theories.

4. Violated Rights of Citizens including Habeas Corpus.
Who?Irregular enemy combatants have no rights. You hold them until the war is over, or you execute them. That's just how it is that's all they're entitled to.Close Gitmo, hang them all.

5. NSA Program to Listen to Citizens without Warrant.
A practice that existed pre-9/11, under the Clinton administration. No lefties are whining about that.POST 9/11 GWB clearly had authority to surveil communications between enemy combatants and persons in the US. Lefties need to remember that FISA does not trump the presidents constitutional powers.

6. Violated International Treaties Including Geneva Convention.
The irregular combatants of Al Qaeda are covered by I believe the fourth Geneva Convention.Under that agreement you regular/terrorist combatants once captured can be interrogated by almost any means and promptly executed.Only real soldiers are entitled to the protections of the of the Geneva conventions.

7. Actively Encouraged, as a Policy, Use of Torture.
No evidence to support this.
8. Gross Negligence on Hurricane Katrina.
1300 schoolbuses underwater, Ray Nagan fleeing with his family to Texas. Louisiana's governor crying instead of asking for federal help.
Whatever flaws there were in FEMa's response, responsibility for the initial response was with the city and state they bungled it incredibly, they failed completely.

9. Iraq Contract Corruption--Bremer "Lost" $8 billion in cash, sole source awards, and gross negligence in managing the peace.
Wars cost money.HeckMassachusetts lost $15 billion on the Big Dig.

10. Stole Ohio election in 2004.
Oh please stop. The lefties in the fools ran a pompous, bloviating, anti-American lowlife (who yes spent four months in Vietnam), who lost by about 4 million votes nationwide, but Bush stole Ohio. Puuuuleeeezzzz.

In summary this is a book by and for moonbats.

1-0 out of 5 stars echo chamber anybody?
my god, every review here is written by a complete moron.

Statistically, that should be impossible. And yet, you all pull it off!Congratulations.

9-11 cover up?huh?are we back to believing that Mohammad Atta was a patsy, and the jews did it?did the jews that work in the WTC get calls on their "jewish line" not to go into work that day?

Stolen florida election?Ohio in '04?Just because the dems nominated two absolute morons - both rich and privelaged beyond even GW's youthful place in society - one of whom is a gigolo, doesn't mean the election was stolen.

Your ilk stole millions of votes across the country - getting non-citizens and felons and dead people to vote. You even got courts to keep the polls open in St. Louis, and now cry about not having been able to steal enough votes to win.

Anyway... I'm not bothered by a bunch of morons talking to themselves. You're free to do so, and frankly it gives me joy to listen to you occassionally.Enjoy yourselves!

5-0 out of 5 stars What, no angry reviews from Republicans?
Funny how rightwingers are strangely silent when you really have their number. A book such as this which makes a clear case for the evil and corrupt nature of the class A idiots that have cheated the taxpayer, betrayed the nation and disgraced the U.S. around the world while launching an unnecessary and very costly (half a trillion dollars) invasion of a foreign land should be being attacked soundly by Bill 'Falafel' O'Really, I'm a Man Coulter, Sean Scammity and the other assorted losers the Right holds up as intellects. But no, they'd rather attack 'moonbats, 'libs' and the rest of the world for 'hating America'. Its the Right that truly hates America and damages it.

One item missing from the book: the Bush family has had business dealings with the Bin Ladin family for decades - isn't that worth investigating post-9-11?

4-0 out of 5 stars So many truths....so little action
This book certainly revealed the lies and tricks committed by our government during the Busch Administration.I am sick of the cover-ups while the so called leaders of government choose to wear blinders and yet rack in the dollars. The Iraq War did not need to happen.

The mishandling of the Katrina situation was especially disturbing.

If you are not afraid to face some ugly truths, this is a book that is hard to put down.

Product Description

The judicious statesman who won victories abroad but suffered defeat at home, whose wisdom and demeanor served America well at a critical time

George Bush was a throwback to a different era. A patrician figure not known for eloquence, Bush dismissed ideology as "the vision thing." Yet, as Timothy Naftali argues, no one of his generation was better prepared for the challenges facing the United States as the Cold War ended. Bush wisely encouraged the liberalization of the Soviet system and skillfully orchestrated the reunification of Germany. And following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, he united the global community to defeat Saddam Hussein. At home, Bush reasserted fiscal discipline after the excesses of the Reagan years.

It was ultimately his political awkwardness that cost Bush a second term. His toughest decisions widened fractures in the Republican Party, and with his party divided, Bush lost his bid for reelection in 1992. In a final irony, the conservatives who scorned him would return to power eight years later, under his son and namesake, with the result that the elder George Bush would see his reputation soar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent title
I've read a few of the books in this series so far and I think this is one of the better ones. It covers the life and career of George Bush, and like every other book in this series, intentionally glosses over many things in the name of brevity. However, the book still manages to cover many of the salient points of this president who often suffers by having come between two of the most popular and charismatic presidents of recent times. Additionally, it gives a good overview of some of the aspects of the man himself and some of the issues he grappled with that many people may not remember or know about. This is a president who served one term and quickly faded from memory, but was actually involved in a number of high profile events, not the least of which was the effective end of the cold war and the sea change in Eastern European politics.

I would say that this book begins with a fair and favorable assessment of Bush and ends that way. In between, there are some sections that are not so positive and make him out to have been somewhat out of his league or not up to the tasks at hand. The coverage of the Iran-Contra scandal is especially ambiguous in that it clearly suggests Bush was not completely innocent but stops short of accusing him of wrongdoing. However, the author clearly comes down on the side of believing that Bush was the right man for the job and that he displayed a great deal of integrity and wisdom in much of what he did. His approach to international relations and his attempts at making domestic progress are seen here as being well-intentioned, and in many cases, successful.

As is the case with all of the presidential biographies in this series, this book is more of a beginning point than anything. The casual reader will enjoy remembering the career of Bush but the serious reader or researcher will want to go beyond what is found here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read My Lips...And Read This Book!
"George H.W. Bush" provides the reader with an interesting insight into the life, career and even the soul of one of our recent presidents.Born into a patrician, political family, this son of a United States Senator was taught from an early age to value loyalty, service and character.Through the pages of this book we learn how George H.W. Bush lived out these values as he strode across the world stage.

In this volume of the American Presidents Series, author Timothy Naftali was limited in the length of his, but yet he has brought us a work which digs below the surface as it analyzes the president who was hard, for many, to know.

This book covers a whole life, not just his presidency.Beginning with his youth, it leads us through his service as the youngest Navy pilot in World War II, during which he lost his crew when their plane was shot down, his business career and early entry into politics.Starting as County Chairman, Bush ran an unsuccessful race for the U.S. Senate before settling in for two terms in the House of Representatives. After another defeat for the Senate, he entered a period of appointive positions, including Ambassador to the United Nations, Representative to China, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and Chairman of the Republican National Committee.Throughout this period, Bush repeatedly angled for the Vice-Presidential nods from Nixon and Ford before getting it from Reagan.

Ready to run for office again, Bush set his sights on the top in 1980, waging a valiant but unsuccessful challenge to the front runner, Ronald Reagan.Serving as a loyalvice-president, Bush gained the experience, and some taint of scandal, which would figure in his eventual succession to the Presidency.
As President, Bush faced a series of challenges, including the management of victory in the Cold War, the savings and loan crisis, the lingering effects of Iran Contra, which could have tarnished Bush's reputation more than it did, Operation Just Cause in Panama and the infamous betray of the "Read My Lips" promise of no more taxes.

The George H.W. Bush Administration will be mostly remembered for Operation Desert Storm in which forces of the coalition which he molded drove Sadam Hussein out of Iraq, but left him in power, only to be dealt with by another George Bush.In telling the story of the Washington end of Desert Storm, Naftali brings the reader into the rationale and the surprises which led to the victory which was obtained. He confirmed my suspicion that the administration was counting on a coup which would topple Sadam from power without the need of a military conquest.

After Victory in the Desert, Bush entered a political downward spiral which led to the bitterness and disappointment that followed his defeat by Bill Clinton. The book explains why Bush was unable to connect with the people for whom he had achieved victory.

Naftali does a good job at demonstrating why Bush was so unsuccessful in developing a loyal political following. He follows the development of this moderate Republican into a Reagan Conservative who then tried to become his own man without alienating the Reaganites who formed his political base. The people who elected him did not really know him and when Ross Perot offered a new and different candidate, many deserted Bush to follow a new leader. In the end, Bush suffered a rejection unprecedented since William Howard Taft.

Despite his political failings, Naftali makes the point that, for a time in his administration, Bush achieved the status of greatness. When confronted with the international challenges of the end of the Cold War and the start of the struggle with Iraq, Bush skillfully brought the forces of the world together in a way that few other leaders have.In this, Bush makes his mark on history.

Although short, this book enables the reader to see President Bush from a different perspective and gain a deeper understanding of him.Although not an apology for its subject, it does evidence a deep respect. It has changed my view of this period of history.A book that can do that is a valuable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better presidents.
Well I too thought that George H. W. Bush was a better president than either the previous occupant or Clinton. He was a wise man who counciled patience and caution. He also wasn't afraid to break a campaign pledge that hurt the country.Unfortunately crazy conservatives killed him in the primaries and Clinton smiled his way to the Presidency. After his son's disasterous presidency, George H. W. Bush is looking much better.
The author makes these points in his book. This is an interesting read about a controversial president.I thought Tim's biography was unbiased. His appraisal of Bush shows both his strengths and weaknesses. However, the author does show the innate goodness of this man.

A worthy addition to the American Presidents series. This is a nice read about a modern U.S. President.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not very insightful
I have to say that I found Timothy Naftali's work to be interesting. He did provide a broad brush overview of Bush 41 but did not really give us any insights that couldn't be gleaned from other people's memoir's. It would seem to me that he read what Bob Woodward, Colin Powell, Norman Schwartzcroft and company had to say and simply gleaned off his own interpretation.Granted I don't think the books in this series are supposed to be of tremendous relevance for the more recent presidents, but I certainly hope that for future generations they can provide details on the lesser known ones.

I think this is an interesting and very light read but it does tend in my opinion to reinforce the notion that George H.W. Bush was as much an observer of history than a participant. He was the guy who just happened to be sitting in the Oval Office when this stuff happened and his presence really didn't have that much to do with the rapid changes in the world at the time and quite the opposite, he nearly prevented them from happening.Anyway it's an interesting afternoon read, but don't expect to come away very impressed with Bush 41.

1-0 out of 5 stars Released too soon
I have this book and my comments are not on the quality of the writing or the information presented. This book should not have been released until after Mr. Bush's death. This was done for Ford's biography in this series and I'm sure it will be done for Carter's. Mr. Bush has many years left to serve on the boards of directors of many a corporation before he passes on. I doubt he'll accomplish anything profound in that time, but if he does it will be lost in this volume. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair evaluation of our 41st president
The Life of a Lone Star Yankee provides an interesting and thoughtful look a George Bush Sr. and how his life impacted his presidency.Parmet provides a balanced look at Bush looking at not only his presidential time but his personal and business life as well.He traces Bush's role as a man who makes money and then enters public service and approaches it as a family way of life.By taking a family approach and showing how the eldest Bush impacted his son and grandson the 43rd president a pattern does begin to emerge. Barbra's role as a mediator and show piece of family values is also apparent throughout his life.George Bush Sr. seems to relish being President and strove to make the best decisions possible within each of the decisions he made as President. From war with Iraq and Panama to social decisions such as Supreme Court nominees and tax hikes he gave careful thought to each decision. His skills as a campaigner were impressive and well detailed and his rise was largely through the talent of Ronald Reagan's teams and not his own.

Parmet shows the successes in school, business, and marriage, his time at the CIA and his accomplishments as President. On the other side he shows the struggles in campaigning, in his role as vice president and reconciling his beliefs with Reagan as well as the trials and tribulations as President. If one is looking for a biography that bashes the president this is not it but it does point out his faults and despite what other reviews said it is not simply the greatness of Bush but a fair evaluation.Overall this book provides a look at if you want an excellent overview of George Bush Sr than this is the place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting biography of an underestimated president
To me as a non-American it has always been a puzzle why George Bush is generally regarded as mediocre and after reading the thoughtful and very complete biography by mr. Parmet I have not found the answer.

Bush has been a succesful businessman after a distinguisged service in the Air Force during the war. He has served as a Senator, as head of the CIA, as the Ambassador to China in an extremely interesting period in Sino-American relations and, finally, as a Vice-President to a very succesful President. What more can you ask as preparation for the most powerful job on earth? It is true that he failed to get elected twice, but is it not a credit to any man when he overcomes defeat to embark on such an interesting career?

The view which I get from this biography is on a balanced man who understood politics very well and also had the gift of personal integrity unmatched by most of his predecessors and certainly not by his successor.

It is true that he was not the greatest of communicators and PR guys, but there one should not forget that he had a very difficult, if not impossible act to follow. It is to his credit that he did not even try to imitate Reagan, but that he led the country in his own personal style.

One should forgive for being biased, as a European, to his Foreign Policy, since my understanding for and interest in the domestic scene is limited.

Bush Presidency can be characterised by formidable leadership in two distinguished events. His conduct of the events of the Gulf War was exemplary. Powell get's a lot of the credit, but I feel that is, partly, undeserved. It was the President's deciding leadership which effectively stopped Saddam's adventure in Kuwait. Of all the wars in which the US got involved after 1945 the handling of the Gulf War was the most succesful. It has been an act of extraordinary diplomacy and brinkmanship to get e.g. Saudi Arabia and Israel on one line. Haven't we all been worried about the Tel Aviv reaction after the first scud missiles hit the country? Personnaly I will not forget the relief I felt when, in the middle of the night in Europe, I saw and listened to Bush anouncing the invasion. This was clearly a leader who believed in what he was doing and who felt to be in full control, aware of the risks of his venture.

A second event has been the unification of Germany. After all the rhetoric of the Reagan administration, it was under Bush that this extraordinary process was done swiftly and with great succes and, most astonishing, without bloodshed. I am aware that the prime players were Kohl and Gorbachov, but it could never have been done without the full support and the tacit agreement of the US. Indeed, by taking a silent and , overtly, modest role Bush did exactly the right thing. I don't think under Reagan, it would have been as smooth.

All this is reconted in this book in fine scholarly detail, which distinguishes this author from the many, more sensational, political writings one sees so often these days.

I think this is a fine book about a succesful Presidency and a man of integrity one could only wish would emerge more on the political scene.

3-0 out of 5 stars Life of one of America's worst presidents.
George Bush was a paradox.Prep school- and Ivy League-educated son of an aristocratic, rich Connecticut US Senator, he transplanted himself to Texasand (with a resounding lack of success) tried to re-invent himself as anold-school Texan. He lost two consecutive attempts to become a US Senatorhimself, and would have been a completely forgotten political wannabe hadit not been for the charitable help of Presidents Nixon and Ford, whoappointed the "wimp" to some key positions, which obviously madeBush think he was competent enough to become president, because he then ranin 1980.After being destroyed by Reagan in the primaries (and denouncingReaganomics as "voodoo"), he then received some more remarkablecharity when Reagan picked him for his running mate. After eight years asVice President, Bush finally won the presidency (although he never wouldhave won if he hadn't have been Reagan veep) and soon proved as incompetentat that job as Dan Quayle at a spelling bee.In short, Bush was apolitically unsuccessful, rich New Englander who happened to have beenpicked for the right jobs by a couple of America's other worst presidents, and was then able to become President himself. An uninspiring, dull storyand an OK book at best.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Uncritical Look at an Unimpressive Presidency
The biographer was a distinguished scholar at the Conference on the Bush Presidency at Hofstra University in April 1997. Although this book was essentially finished by the time of the Conference, there is at least one footnote (Steven Burgess) referring to a paper presented at Hofstra. This reviewer suggested that Parmet look at the critical books by Jack Matlock on Bush's foreign policy and Monica Crowley's book on Nixon's devastating appraisal of Bush, but there is no evidence that this occurred. P More importantly, Parmet is weak when it comes to explaining the Bush stagnation. Despite the Persian Gulf War, there ensued the slowest four-year growth period in the postwar years. Thus, it is more appropriate to refer to the Bush stagnation rather than the Bush recession. P Whereas it is possible to describe Reagan's supply-side economics as a version of "commercial Keynesianism," there would seem to be no Keynesian bones in George Bush. Bush raised taxes in 1990, in collaboration with Tom Foley, as the economy headed downward. Later he refused to sign a reasonable tax cut coming out of Congress in March 1992. Instead he relied primarily on a change in withholding of income taxes which produced a brief upturn in the fourth quarter followed by sluggish growth in early 1993 when the tax rebates were smaller due to the previous tax cuts in 1992. P Readers interested in a critique of Bush's economic policy may want to read the contribution of Timothy Canova after the publication of the proceedings by Greenwood. 92. P ... Read more

Product Description
Through the lens of more than forty speeches from his presidency, George H. W. Bush takes a special look back on the momentous global events of 1989-1992 -- the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the liberation of Kuwait, to name a few -- and reminisces about what it was like to be president through such unprecedented times. Choosing from among the hundreds of speeches he gave while in office, former president Bush selects those that meant the most to him and introduces each one with candid comments recalling the circumstances and events leading up to it.

"Although now in hindsight it seems that the end results were almost preordained, at the time no one knew what would happen next. Nothing was 'inevitable' at all. We learned quickly that words mattered," he writes in the opening pages of Speaking of Freedom. Selections throughout the book bring back the fascinating times of Lech Walesa, Mikhail Gorbachev, Václav Havel, and even Saddam Hussein -- when we watched as the idea of freedom seemed to spread all over the world. It was a stunning time in world history, and in these speeches the forty-first president observes it from his perspective as commander in chief, diplomat, politician, navy pilot, and grandfather.

While many of the speeches deal with foreign affairs, others cover freedom's spread within the United States, including the signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act and the historic Clean Air Act of 1990. President Bush's voice comes across perhaps most clearly when he is calling young people to lead a life of meaning and adventure that results only from serving others.

Showcasing President Bush's usual charm, self-deprecating wit, and sharp perception, these speeches mark the moments -- large and small -- that defined his presidency. Through his words that motivated people all around the world to become involved in ideas that were bigger than themselves, George H. W. Bush shows us what it means to be "speaking of freedom." ... Praise for The LEADERSHIP GENIUS of GEORGE W. BUSH

"Finally, a fun-to-read book about George W. Bush that details the secrets to his success!"
-Ken Blanchard, coauthor, The One Minute Manager

"Political journalists love graduate student intelligence, the ability to make clever allusions in seminars, and in 1999--2000, they hassled George W. Bush for not having it. They didn't realize what this book succinctly displays: that the President has something far more important-CEO intelligence, the ability to ask tough questions, garner essential information, and make discerning decisions. Such intelligence can be fostered and honed, and this book shows how."
-Dr. Marvin Olasky, Professor of Journalism, The University of Texas at Austin, and Editor in Chief, World magazine

"Put aside politics and read this book right away for its true wisdom and concrete advice about leadership. The authors have done a brilliant job explaining the leadership style that makes this President so effective. Any leader can learn from the philosophy, strategy, and tactics in this book."
-Bruce Tulgan, founder of RainmakerThinking, Inc., and author, Winning the Talent Wars

"Thompson and Ware make a compelling case that this President who 'loves to be underestimated' has a highly effective approach to leadership that is humane, direct, and at times, truly transformational. Many in business today could benefit from reading this book."

5-0 out of 5 stars At last- a book that recognizes the truth about our President!
This book shows how George W. Bush's life and experiences uniquely prepared him for his role as President of the United States, at a such pivotal time in the history of our county. This book does a good job of countering the liberal-left media's dis-information campaign.

It shows how GWB has risen to the challenges presented by terrorist attacks on our country, and how he has stood firm, despite pressure on every side, to back down, in the face of aggression.

He was raised in a tradition of true statesmanship, and has unfailingly put the interestes or our country above all else, choosing to sacrifice temporary popularity for doing the right thing.

History will view him as one of our greatest presidents.

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a JOKE!
I flipped through this, as usual, the usual Bush platitude and down-home country good sense, Mom and Apple Pie.

If there was ever a president who made me want to vomit more, it was before I was born.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those with short memories
Sure, the "pundits" and "talking heads" are having a field day right now, taking pot-shots at the President just because there is some tactical tweaking going on in Iraq , but pause for a moment to recall some of the outstanding characteristics that impelled us to elect President Bush.TWICE!That's what this fine book brings to light

What the "pundits" fail to comprehend is that the seeming "incuriosity" of the President (to employ one of the media's pet pejoratives) reflects a voracious, non-judgemental absorption of facts, ideas and information from those surrounding him.Only after this processdoes he sit down with the logical objectivity of a CEO to determine what course is best for America.

That said, this book is NOT a tribute to G. W. Bush.It is a HOW TO book, that can teach and instill similar leadership qualities in those willing to learn.I think we can all agree that the rest of the world would quake if they thought our industries and government were controlled by a group of men (and women) with the same leadership skills and panache as W.(Let me add here that, if Chrysler had had decent [Bushian] leadership, Mercedes would be using American made parts, and not the other way around!)

Lastly, it's important to understand that many people simply don't "get" the President's leadership style.Often - though not always - blinded by partisanship, they simply refuse to accept or understand the necessity and appropriateness of his decisions. With that kind of negativity, how can they?Fortunately, at least their children will reap the results of the breathtaking strategic vision and leadership of President Bush.

2-0 out of 5 stars what the...?
I saw one of the author's (Thompson) speak once and it was much more of a political rally or a serious discussion on leadership in an organizational context. Even though I questioned the sanity of anyone who writes a book with the words "genius," "common sense," and "GW Bush" in the same title, I decided to give it a try.

What I found is a book that is emblamatic of Bush's whole presidency. The rare glimpses we do get of Bush in public are scripted and fake (this is a fact, as recently proven. He has to be the worst public speaking president ever). Thus, any impression we get of him is clearly scripted with a few buzz words (9/11, freedom, tax relief, etc.) thrown in for effect. It should be no wonder, then, that Bush is seen as a man of little substance or depth, a syncophantic lackey for Cheney and his colleagues.

This book follows in that tradition. It presents a made-up, scripted version account of Bush's leadership style and conviently glosses over his costly leadership mistakes (cronyism, relying on anecdote over evidence, lacking credibility).

So, while this book is worthwhile in that outlines good leadership techniques in general, by attaching these characteristics to GW it reads like a surreal painting - taking common sense, ordinary objects and placing them in a contradictory setting. While they make sense in the real world, in their new context they make absolutely no sense at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is about George W Bush - not his Presidency
RE: reader who doesn't think GWB Presidency is genius -
this book is a compilation of stories/examples describing the 10 behaviors that make GWB, the man, a leadership genius. The stories/examples cover his college years through his first term Presidency. After each example there are 2 sections:
1. what the experts say about this leadership behavior
2. step by step how the reader can successfully implement this in their own leadership

Product Description
The bestselling author of Time and Chance: Gerald Ford's Appointment with History joins the author of Kennedy and Roosevelt: the Uneasy Alliance to lend their unmistakable voices to the groundbreaking Character Above All audio series with their illuminating examinations of two of America's most recent Presidents.

Recorded live at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, James Cannon and Michael Beschloss continue a series of lectures delivered by a team of historians, biographers and journalists assembled by Robert Wilson to explore the Presidential character. Sharing their insight into the Presidents they have written about, these authors and scholars address the larger issue of the impact of the Presidential character on leadership and the creation of trust.

Cannon tells how Gerald Ford, chosen because of his character to replace the disgraced Agnew and subsequently, Nixon, restored stability to the federal government -- but his pardon of Nixon cost him the presidency. Beschloss shows how George Bush was fated to be President in a Republican party lurching far to his right. He avoided unveiling a domestic vision, absorbing himself in foreign affairs, but when he ran for reelection, the voters decided that character and foreign policy triumphs were not enough.

Character Above All is incomparable audio, crackling with the energy and excitement of a great mind at work and the intellectual urgency befitting a topic of lasting national importance. ... Read more

Americans have a lot of reasons to hate George W. Bush-and readers will find them all in The I Hate George W. Bush Reader. The anthology features the best writing about the myriad reasons to hate Dubya, including his bald-faced lies about everything from Iraq's "nucyular" program to his industry-written energy policy, his corporate giveaways disguised as environmental policies, his chicken-hawk militarism, his disdain for our civil liberties, and his pathetic economic record of squandered surpluses, record deficits and millions of lost jobs. In addition, there is his smug smirk, his silver-spoon incompetence, the way he butchers our language, his staff of misers, hypocrites and closet fascists like Gale Norton, John Ashcroft, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney. 3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag on Bush
The strength of this book is its quotes. Some humorous, some seriously arrogant, and some poignant.

There was a chapter on Ari Fleischer and his evasive tactics that served Bush II so well during press conferences.

One of the Republican whoppers that was dispelled was the fictional "Charley the janitor", an invention of Dick Armey, lately known as the wizard behind the curtain of the Tea Party.

There was another interesting piece on the Republican press and how they spin tax cuts for the wealthy to the poor and the working poor.
Then there is this quote from David Stockman on Reagan's 1981 tax bill-
"[Supply-side economics] was always a trojan horse to bring down the top rate...Do you realize the greed that came to the forefront? The hogs were really feeding."

There were some humorous mis-speak quotes from Dan Quayle that sound very similar to Bushisms made dubiously famous by Bush 41.You will find a collection of Bushisms here unrivaled by most books.

Another interesting subject was the close ties between George W. Bush and Ken Lay.

On page 393 there is a quote from Harry S. Truman-
"Republicans are....bloodsuckers with offices in Wall Street, princes of privilege,plunderers."- Harry S. Truman,1948.
Recent history suggests that Harry called that one correctly!

This book is mostly rhetoric and poorly titled but there is some very good reading from authors such as Greg Palast, Senator Robert Byrd, Stanley Kutler, and The Onion. Greg Palast contributed some investigative reporting on election 2000. Very good information that you won't find in many American news sources.

5-0 out of 5 stars the title is ironic, people
People who give this book one star because of the title are completely missing the point. It isn't real HATE - it's frustration and it's a jab at the fact that it is the conservative blowhards like rush and billo that only deal in such words. The book is full of intelligent, well reasoned, and objective essays about the failings -- be they political, moral, intellectual, etc -- of our president.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bush Buster
I will readily admit that I am no fan of Bush.In fact, the local democrats in my area refer to him as "Dumbya" and the Commander in Thief and Puppet Figurehead, sobriquets I feel he has truly earned. There are, as another reviewer on the US Amazon boards pointed out many reasons to hate and fear this "incompetent buffoon of a president," which is a chillingly apt description of Dumbya. One almost wishes he was a demagogue because one has to have some intelligence to be a demagogue.

Clint Willis has written some excellent, trenchant essays about the Commander in Thief as have other notable and distinguished authors such as Molly Ivins, Greg Palast, Michael Moore, Paul Krugman and Joe Conanson. These authors write with brilliant detail, offering levity to balance out the dire situations this president has caused.Dumbya's tenure in office is of the emperor's new clothes genre and it is long past time others admitted that the emperor is naked!Naked!

It is galling and appalling to hear the malapropisms directly from this president. It is even more alarming and horrifying to see his glaring misdeeds and atrocious administration replete with scandals. This book pulls the news pundits' reports on Dumbya and his atrocious administration and the reasons for why so many view it this way.For those who support Bush, this book will certainly provide input from a different perspective.

1-0 out of 5 stars The "I Hate America Textbook Series"
I'd have to wonder how many trees were cut down to write this dribble? On the other hand, in case it gets cold out there and I run out of logs...it could be useful. But if George Bush had the (D) after his name instead of (R), the same people who hate him would be wanting to have his baby.

1-0 out of 5 stars The title speaks volumes
Hate-filled people attract or convince very few people. At least this book is up-front about its level of rhetoric. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the inside story of how Jeb Bush persuaded the Fox network to call the presidential election for his brother George W. Bush on Election Night 2000. It was one phone call to Fox — the details of which are revealed in this book for the first time — that propelled George W. Bush into leading position for 43rd president of the United States. Even though the erroneous statement had to be retracted within two hours, the damage done by this false call to Al Gore's chances of winning the election were incalculable. David Moore, at the time senior editor for the Gallup Poll, makes the plausible and alarming case that, had Fox not made this miscall, the resulting political environment would have been less biased in favor of Bush, and that Al Gore could have won.   On Election Night in 2000, Moore was with the exit poll "decision team" of CBS and CNN, taking notes on how election races were called, and miscalled, around the country — including the two miscalls and two rescissions in Florida. Prior to joining Gallup in 1993, Moore was founder and director of the Survey Center at the University of New Hampshire.

1-0 out of 5 stars Idiotic
This book is idiotic. Does this author realize that NBC, CNN, ABC and CBS all called Florida originally for Gore, with less than 75% precincts reporting, which cost Bush literally hundreds of thousands of votes in Florida's pan handle? And that this early call for Florida in Gore's favor cost Bush perhaps millions of votes nationwide?

Book lacks obvious research and uses vague references to come to the conclusion that the author hoped to arrive at - that somehow the media and Jeb Bush stole the election for Bush. Nothing could be further from the truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars funny
I would like to make a point about the ultimate person who would be running for the democrats as President in this election if Gore had not had the election stolen. It would have been Liberman, basically a Republican.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling
This is a brisk but comprehensive overview of the 2000 election.Despite the inherently democratic bias of the what the book is asserting, the book never comes off as whining and references are plenty. One of the author's main points is that the Fox News channel prematurely called Florida for Bush, and all of the other networks blindly followed suit to avoid being the only network to not have this information.Hours later it was clear the state was too close to call for either candidate, but because all of the networks had called Florida and thus the entire election for Bush, Gore's later contentions were perceived as those of a "loser" trying to overturn a result in his favor, when in fact the reality of the situation was that Bush had never "won" the state to begin with.Had the state never been called, the perception would have been that Florida would simply require some extra time to be talliedand there wouldn't have been the same sort of "Sore Loserman" public backlash to Gore's recount efforts. It's pretty convincing stuff.

Where the author failed to convince me of though was that the "Bushies" made a concious effort to "steal" the election. The author describes what happened as George Bush's cousin John Ellis being encouraged by Florida governor Jeb Bush to call the state. This, of course, turned out to be foolish, but ultimately FOX was sticking their neck out in the call. The author's tone suggests that this was some grand scheme planned out from the beginning, that the Bushies somehow knew exactly how the scenario would play out and that their move would turn public opinion against Gore.

Ultimately though, this was a compelling book and at less than 150 pages, worth anyone's time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where everything started
Thinking how U.S. found itself in the Iraqi quagmire? Well, the 2000 Florida nightmare, of course. This book is a good rundown of what happened then and why, from the vantage point of where things actually started ticking: the tv screens which projected Bush winning, following the lead of Fox and - guess who? - Jeb Bush. Moore can be repetitive, but, if you are interested in politics, his account of the inner workings of pollsters and statisticians behind the screen in electoral nights is a must read. ... Read more
