Principles of European Insolvency Law tries to capture the common elements that national insolvency laws share and that make up the essence of insolvency proceedings in Europe. It makes a first, and, so far, unique attempt, to tackle an area of law which is of great commercial importance, but in which some might have thought it was too difficult to detect a European approach.

Principles of European Insolvency Law looks to a future of more European integration in areas of commercial law and practice. They may serve as working material for further study, which could result in proposals for legislation on a supranational level. Professor Wood told us at his book launch that this work is for law and economics undergraduates drawn from the seven main volumes of his definitive statement on the law and practice of international finance. That is exactly what it is, and it fulfills its purpose superbly explaining international finance law.

This edition is a summary of his 7 volume work covering the entire scope of the subject on a comparative and a world-wide basis. Wood succeeds in his aim of explaining the politics and the law, and how the transactions work out in practice. The chapter headings can be taken as lectures followed by questions and seminar topics which will be of use to lecturers and learners.

Philip Wood is a charming man to meet and the master of this substantive law with his definitive experience of the subject. His enthusiasm comes out clearly with this work which distils complex and confusing information brilliantly in a way which aids memory as he wishes it to do.

He describes the areas as `doctrine, data and deals'. How right he is! He gets the learner to go where he is as quickly as possible (a fine feat in itself), so (as he puts it) "they can then leap forwards". In this exciting and important area of law he does just that.

This is the one project finance book I keep at my desk and take with me onbusiness trips.It is invaluable.The book is filled with importantinformation I need when working on a project finance deal (sample contractprovisions; explanations of currency risks; financing sources; World Banklending characteristics; political risk insurance; and on and on.Theauthor manages to do the impossible--he combines legal and business aspectsof project finance in an easy-to-use format, from a real life perspective. Each part of a project finance deal is addressed in separate chapters.

Myonly criicism is that the author uses the European-favored expansive tableof contents, rather than a detailed index.Yet, the book is so wellorganized that the information is easy to find.

It's clearly the bestlegal and business book on project finance available.It gives me, as abusiness person, a real edge.
