Product Description
This is a book on the theory behind the construction of production index numbers. Well-known examples of such indexes are the Gross Domestic Product, the Producer Price Index, and labor productivity. Fisher and Shell provide the analysis behind this class of index numbers. They treat separately the different production units and different forms of industrial organization. They show the direction of bias in traditionally calculated index numbers and how biases can affect fundamental conclusions about the growth or stagnation of the economy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Understanding and Confidence Increased with Each Chapter
I bought this book because of my confusion with index funds after reading different advertisements from newspapers and websites. The result of my learnings are three limit orders I just placed for different sector funds.

This book is written objectively without a slant towards a specific product. Also, written for the inexperienced as well as the professional trader. It provided some real insights as to how trading is accomplished (in plain English).

The bing "WOW" was seeing how I was being penalized as long term investor in mutual funds because of the annual tax distribution. Also, the majority of funds do not beat the S&P500 index!! Why invest in them when these new investment resources are available?

Highly recommend this book to all levels of investors.

Product Description

Every time you buy a can of tuna or a new television, its bar code is scanned to record its price and other information. These "scanner data" offer a number of attractive features for economists and statisticians, because they are collected continuously, are available quickly, and record prices for all items sold, not just a statistical sample. But scanner data also present a number of difficulties for current statistical systems.

Scanner Data and Price Indexes assesses both the promise and the challenges of using scanner data to produce economic statistics. Three papers present the results of work in progress at statistical agencies in the U.S., United Kingdom, and Canada, including a project at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to investigate the feasibility of incorporating scanner data into the monthly Consumer Price Index. Other papers demonstrate the enormous potential of using scanner data to test economic theories and estimate the parameters of economic models, and provide solutions for some of the problems that arise when using scanner data, such as dealing with missing data.

Product Description

The price index, a pervasive long established institution for economics, is a number issued by the Statistical Office that should tell anyone the ratio of costs of maintaining a given standard of living in two periods where prices differ.

For a chain of three periods, the product of the ratios for successive pairs must coincide with the ratio for the endpoints. This is the chain consistency required of price indices. A usual supposition is that the index is determined by a formula involving price and quantity data for the two reference periods, always joined with the question of which one to choose, and the perplexity that chain consistency is not obtained with any. Hence finally they should all be abandoned. This situation reflects ‘The Index Number Problem’. This book brings together a coherent discussion of fifty years of astonishingly creative work on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on this important issue.
This is a must read for anyone interested in getting prices right. The debate over prices concerns both public policy and pure economic research. The Boskin Commission claimed that the CPI overstates inflation and recommended that measures of inflation be ajdusted to correct for this. This recommendation was quickly embraced by many in the economics profession. It has also had an impact on public policy debate, particularly as regards indexation of social security. The first half of the book presents the Boskin Commission's findings verbatim, and supporters of overstatement are able to speak for themselves. The second half presents Dr. Baker's deconstruction of the Commission's findings. One part of his criticism involves the presentation of technical arguments and instances of CPI understatement. However, the most compelling part is Dr. Baker's reconstruction of recent U.S. economic history using Boskin's implied measure of prices. He shows that 50% of families were apparently living below the 1994 poverty level in 1960.This is implausible. Protagonists of the debate will no doubt continue slinging instances of over- and understatement of prices at each other. However, until supporters of CPI overstatement can explain away Dr. Baker's findings about implied poverty levels, their arguments will ring hollow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Economic Freedom = The Key to Development?
Economic freedom may or may not be the way to spiritual or political happiness, but it certainly seems that it's one of the keys to economic development. Although it's difficult to prove once and for all precisely what economic environments are best for countries, this series attempts to get at the keys. I also believe that if they were to change their opinions on a measure or two, they would have no hesitancy to revise or amend their criteria. Whatever flaw their analyses have, it is a monumental effort they put together each year, and at the very least it's a benchmark for people to debate about. There's information in here that you can't get easily from anywhere else at this price...

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb resource
We use the resource as a reference for business conditions and navigating the often difficult issues of world business. Its bibliographic resources are excellent, especially for smaller countries for which there are fewpublished data. We have used it for many years, and find it thoughtful,thought-provoking, and insightful.

1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!
It is a huge debate in Sociology and Political science: does democratization cause economic growth or economic growth democratization. But the authors seem careless: if there is a correlation between the two,it means that economic freedom and democratization must cause economicgrowth. Why? I don't know! Do you?And that is the first thing ourstudents learn in Methodology courses: correlation does no mean causalityat all!

5-0 out of 5 stars My students learn more from this than from an entire text
The Index of Economic Freedom is an heroic piece of work, both statistically and in terms of the amount of research it takes to bring it all together. I teach International Business at a university and requirethat students consult the IEF for papers on individual countries in whichU.S. businesses might wish to invest. Each country is evaluated by a number(1-5) on 10 dimensions: trade, taxation, government, monetary policy, foreign investment, banking, wages and prices, property rights, regulation, and black market. The text on each country also notes whether the numbershave changed over the last years, and explains why. Over the years,Singapore and Hong Kong have typically been rated the most economicallyfree countries, while Cuba and North Korea have been the mostrepressed.

The connection between economic freedom and rising standardsof living becomes clear to students as never before. They start to readonly on their assigned country and then go on to compare other countries, just because they're fascinated! I wish I could find more works of thiscaliber. ... Read more

Product Description
Nancy and Richard Ruggles's seminal work on prices has a contemporary relevance for modern-day theorists and practitioners. These carefully selected essays provide a core analysis of pricing systems and the behavior and measurement of prices.

Initially, the authors examine pricing systems and the role of prices in the theories of value and income distribution. They examine the theory of marginal cost pricing and the welfare basis of the marginal cost pricing principle before focusing on the problems of measuring price changes over time and space. They also examine the reliability of domestic price statistics and price indices and offer an evaluation of the wholesale price index. They expand this analysis to examine the behavior of prices, costs, wage rates and earnings in the United States economy, placing particular emphasis on inflation between 1950 and 1973 and on price stability and economic growth.

This book will be invaluable to academics, statisticians and policymakers with an interest in micreoconomics and pricing.TABLE OF CONTENTS: PrefacePart I:Price Theory1. Product Description
This volume presents a comprehensive index to the entire series of "The Collected Works of James M Buchanan". Included is an annotated copy of the entire curriculum vitae, indicating in which volume in the series the various items appear and, correspondingly, those items that have been omitted. As the editors observe, "This is a series that no serious scholar of public choice theory, public economics, or contemporary political theory will want to be without. It is a series that will also appeal to the general student of liberty, for Buchanan has - perhaps more than any other contemporary scholar - helped us to view politics without the romantic gloss that characterises so much normative political theory and that slips unthinkingly into so much popular commentary. Buchanan has been a resolute defender of 'the ideal of a society of free and responsible individuals,' and has been a painstaking analyst of the institutional structure that might best support such a society. Buchanan stands with von Mises, Hayek, Popper, and Friedman as one of the great twentieth-century scholars of liberty." ... Read more
